REUTERS/Staff Acquire Licensing RightsOct 19 (Reuters) - European shares tumbled nearly 1% on Thursday as a raft of dismal corporate earnings including from packaged food giant Nestle worsened an already risk-averse mood, driven by jitters around the Middle East war and uncertainty over interest rates. The pan-European STOXX 600 (.STOXX) was down 0.8% by 0705 GMT, hitting an over one-week low. Shares of Nestle (NESN.S) dropped nearly 2% after the Swiss consumer giant posted lower-than-expected nine-month sales growth on Thursday as higher product prices made shoppers balk. French carmaker Renault (RENA.PA) shed 4.6% as the pace of sales growth slowed due to currency depreciations. Nokia (NOKIA.HE) lost 1.8% as the Finnish telecom gear group announced plans to slash jobs after posting a drop in its third-quarter sales.

After the data, the S&P 500 spent the morning zig-zagging between red and green. U.S. benchmark 10-year yields rose after the inflation data and rose further to hit a session high after the auction. The rise in yields particularly pressured rate-sensitive sectors such as utilities (.SPLRCU) and real estate (.SPLRCR), often viewed as bond proxies. Homebuilding stocks fell after the data and came under more pressure after the afternoon increase in bond yields. Traders now expect a stronger chance the Fed will end up delivering another interest-rate hike this year, and keep rates higher for longer next year.

The rouble collapsed to a record low in the weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine last year, before Moscow imposed similar capital controls that saw it recover to a seven-year high. Kogan warned, however, that by 2025-2026 businesses would form plans based on a rouble rate of 100-105. The central bank endorsed the measures, a shift in its stance, after it previously warned of the inefficiency of currency controls. "The rouble is even less tradable for foreign investors after Russia re-imposed some capital controls," Piotr Matys, senior FX analyst at In Touch Capital Markets.
