Single women face unique challenges when planning for retirement, so I asked an expert for help. Plus, women are often put in a caregiving role, which means time off from work — and not contributing regularly to retirement funds. So how can single women like me juggle with inflation, a higher cost of living, dwindling income, and the gender wage gap to be on track for retirement? I asked Marie Thomasson, a certified financial planner and founder of Modern Assets, an LA-based financial advisory firm for independent, progressive women, for tips on how single women can steer the course and make sure they're on track with their goals for retirement planning. Reassess your retirement accountsOnce you have your financial bases covered, you can venture into investing and retirement planning, says Thomasson.

The trust funds that Social Security relies on to pay benefits are "rapidly heading to zero," according to the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. Those funds, which are typically invested in Treasury securities, are projected to run out in 2034, at which point just 80% of benefits may be payable. As that date draws closer, that has prompted more discussion as to whether that money should also be invested in stocks. "Theoretically, yes," said Anqi Chen, senior research economist and assistant director of savings research at the Center for Retirement Research, which recently published research addressing the question. The company, called Gatsby Chocolate, appeared on Friday's season premiere of ABC's "Shark Tank." The appeal for Gatsby Chocolate was evident — lots of people have a sweet tooth, and a candy bar with less calories but "no compromise on taste" sounds like a no-brainer. But for Lori Greiner and guest shark Candace Nelson, founder of Sprinkles Cupcakes, it just didn't fit. While Lori entertained that notion, for a 25% stake, Cuban balked: "My brand is too big to be the face of the brand," the billionaire said. The seal of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is seen at their headquarters in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 12, 2021. The vote by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission would update a two-decade-old "Names Rule" requiring that investment fund names match the assets they contain. The SEC since 2021 has also focused on prosecuting ESG-related misconduct and "greenwashing," bringing enforcement actions and levying fines. The 80% investment requirement currently applies to other fund characteristics such as risk. As a result of the change, 76% of investment funds would be subject to the "Names Rule" up from the current 60%, SEC officials said prior to the vote.

CNN —Attorney General Merrick Garland forcefully rebuked congressional Republicans who have accused the Justice Department of political bias as he opened a contentious House Judiciary Committee hearing in Washington on Wednesday. Even with the face-saving indictment last week of Hunter Biden, everyone knows the fix is in,” House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan said in his opening statement. The House Judiciary Committee has also been probing allegations from an IRS whistleblower that the Justice Department investigation into Hunter Biden was politically tainted. “House Republicans will use their time today to talk about long-discredited conspiracy theories and Hunter Biden’s laptop. Several House Republicans – including McCarthy – have floated an impeachment of the attorney general, although those calls have quieted down as House Republicans have turned their impeachment lens on President Joe Biden himself.

He bought Apple shares after realizing how devoted people are to its phones, and its unique ability to keep consumers spending within the Apple ecosystem. His return has been well over $100 billion on paper, making Apple Buffett's best investment over the past decade. "Our railroad is a very good business, but it's not remotely as good as Apple's business," Buffett said at the Berkshire shareholder meeting in May . Criteo is eyeing a $42 billion slice of the retail media market. A glut of retail media networks could reduce that $42 billion retail media opportunity by 20%. Criteo said that this type of "fragmentation" could cause retail media revenues to drop 20%. He said brands will often buy across three or four individual retail media networks, which means smaller retail media networks can struggle to attract advertising dollars. The Trade Desk's CEO Jeff Green has previously announced his ambition to control "most" of the retail media market and it has aggressively sought partnerships to prove that retail ads drive sales, to inspire more advertisers to buy retail media.

Savers are now getting higher cash yields after several interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. "Everyone thinks it's kind of a free lunch," said Tommy Lucas, a certified financial planner and enrolled agent at Moisand Fitzgerald Tamayo in Orlando, Florida. Falling into the regular tax brackets, ordinary income is less favorable than long-term capital gains. Similarly, taxable money market funds — which typically invest in shorter-term lower-credit-risk debt — and Treasury bills also trigger ordinary income. High-yield savings accounts, with easy access to your funds, are worth considering, said Ken Tumin, founder and editor at DepositAccounts.com. While investors expect the Federal Reserve to start cutting interest rates next year, online savings account rates won't fall significantly until the policy shifts, he added. Treasury billsAmid rising interest rates, Treasury bills have also become a competitive option for cash, with yields well above 5%, as of Aug. 18. The actively managed fund invests mostly in U.S. corporate bonds, a majority of which are investment grade. That's because the fund also has a small portion of high-yield corporate debt holdings. Some 74% of the holdings are in U.S. corporate bonds, as of June 30. For example, Netflix and Occidental Petroleum had high-yield bonds that were upgraded this year, he said.

In New York City, debates over affordability often center on the proliferation of opulent high-rise developments. But in the boroughs, deep-pocketed investors are buying up hundreds of smaller buildings, prompting a new set of concerns in the city’s deepening housing crisis. Over the past few years, private equity firms have quietly spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying apartments in neighborhoods like Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Williamsburg in Brooklyn and Ridgewood in Queens, property records show. Private equity firms — which typically invest money on behalf of pension funds, endowments or other large sources of wealth — focus on assets, like businesses or housing, that they can buy relatively cheaply but that have big profit potential. Their expansion into the housing market across the nation has prompted scrutiny in Congress about whether the trend is amplifying America’s affordability problems.
