Israel openly said it conducted “precise strikes” on military targets in Iran. “Israel now has broader aerial freedom of operation in Iran,” Israel’s military spokesman Daniel Hagari said, touting achievements in the attack. The idea was that if Israel were to strike Iran, Tehran would retaliate by unleashing its militias against Israel. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that they have no intention of weaponizing the country’s nuclear program, while simultaneously using its potential as leverage in negotiations with the West. “Even the more hawkish American presidents have not favored taking military strikes because the most likely outcome is that, at some point, that will make Iran turn nuclear,” Parsi said.

Iran responded to that attack with a drone and missile barrage on Israel that was at the time unprecedented. Israel retaliated with a limited strike on Iran which caused little damage. U.S. defense officials told NBC News that Israel had told their American counterparts about Saturday's strikes ahead of time, but that the U.S. was not involved in the attack. "The fact that Iran is downplaying the attack and what's been hit is good news," he told NBC News on the phone. "Whether Israel and Iran will think like this is a different matter," he added.

Oil prices edged higher on Thursday, recouping some of the more than 1% losses from the previous session after U.S. crude inventories rose much more than estimated. Brent was on track for a 3.2% gain in the week, while WTI was set to rise 2.9%. Last week oil fell more than 7% on worries about Chinese demand and easing concerns about potential disruptions of Middle East oil supplies. Smaller-than-expected rate cuts will temper the reduction in borrowing costs, which in turn could affect economic activity and oil demand. Meanwhile, Israeli strikes pounded Beirut's southern suburbs on Wednesday and Hezbollah said it fired precision guided missiles for the first time at Israeli targets, keeping markets nervous about supply.

A DJI Inspire 1 Pro drone is flown during a demonstration at the SZ DJI Technology Co. headquarters in Shenzhen, China, on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. China has unveiled a set of export control regulations for so-called dual-use items, which refer to goods or technologies that can be used for civilian as well as military purposes, ahead of President Xi Jinping's trip to Russia. The regulations come amid intensified U.S. sanctions targeting Chinese companies which the U.S. deems have been supplying dual-use goods, such as drones, to aid Russia's war effort in Ukraine. China has attempted to show that "it is following similar norms as other nations in terms of how it regulates trade in dual-use goods," he added. U.S. officials are investigating the apparent leak of two top-secret U.S. documents that show American spy agencies tracking possible Israeli preparations for conducting an attack on Iran, three U.S. officials said.
