Hong Kong CNN —The operator of 7-Eleven has rejected an opening offer from the owner of convenience store rival Circle K, indicating the bid was too low and that its global business was worth more. In a statement Friday, Tokyo-based Seven & I Holdings, which owns 7-Eleven, said it was “open” to “sincerely consider” any proposal that is in the best interests of its shareholders. The Financial Times reported on Thursday that Seven & I was open to the possibility of a higher offer from its suitor. Shares in Seven & I have rallied since the news of the offer broke last month, pushing its market value above $38 billion. Although 7-Eleven traces its origins to Dallas, Texas, it was the late Japanese entrepreneur Masatoshi Ito who is credited with turning it into a ubiquitous global brand.

Last week, NFL team owners voted to allow an initial group of private equity firms to acquire up to a 10% stake of a franchise. "This isn't a case where private equity is going to come in and have influence on the franchise." Private equity has been eager to take stakes in sports as team valuations rise, mainly due to ballooning media rights deals. As investors, private equity firms often take management and board roles. Private equity investments typically have a set duration — it can range from three to seven years in many cases — and an expected return.

Researchers have begun measuring the impact of legalized sports gambling on American households, and the initial results paint a worrisome picture about how its expansion has affected bettors’ finances. In separate papers released this month, academics have found that households in states where gambling was legalized saw significantly reduced savings, as well as lower investments in assets like stocks that are generally considered more financially sound. Meanwhile, states that legalized sports betting saw their residents’ aggregate credit scores decrease, while bankruptcies increased. North Carolina became the most recent state to offer online sports betting earlier this year. Earlier this year, the major sports betting platforms formed the Responsible Online Gaming Association to address problem gambling.

Without a doubt, my mom expected to be free of dependents decades ago. But here I am, 39, unable to save a cent, in need of her financial support. I was otherwise financially independent, worked three jobs, had a good chunk of money saved, and my life was planned out. Not only was I feeling the effects of financial strain from the cost of school, but physical, mental, and ethical exhaustion had taken hold. She loaned me money to pay off that debt and told me I could pay my rent when I received my next student loan payment.

It is widely seen as part of the latest crackdown on allies of the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who handpicked General Hameed to serve as spy chief during his tenure. Officials have accused General Hameed and his brother of attempting to acquire ownership of the housing development by arresting and blackmailing its owner, according to court proceedings. Officials also accused General Hameed of violating the Pakistan Army Act after retiring in 2022, according to the news release, though it did not specify the exact charges. The European private equity firm had been eyeing the late-stage startup for five years, impressed by its traction and focus on customer success. The speed of the deal, and the flashy multiple, illustrate how private equity funds are able to swallow startups more often lately. But in the face of rising inflation and interest rates, software customers from tech startups to mom-and-pop shops trimmed their budgets. Andreessen Horowitz plans to invest in the private equity asset class through its family office division. With high interest rates and a liquidity crunch reshaping the landscape, private equity is seizing the moment.

This week's violent global market meltdown started in Japan — where Warren Buffett has big investments — but the damage was limited. The Nikkei 225 index , a benchmark for Japanese stocks, plunged 12.4% on Monday, its worst day since "Black Monday" in 1987, triggering a domino effect globally. The stocks Buffett holds cratered as much as 30% initially, but bounced back by the end of the week along with the broader market. The Japanese trading houses also reported second-quarter earnings earlier this week, mostly exceeding analyst expectations and maintaining their full-year guidance. Away from Japan, Buffett was in a selling mood in the second quarter.
