“Today’s verdict does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality,” said campaign communications director Michael Tyler. Convicted felon or not, Trump will be the Republican nominee for president,” Tyler said. Supporters hold placards and flags following the announcement of the verdict in Trump's criminal trial. Or, the guilty verdict could play into Biden’s campaign theme that his predecessor is too corrupt and extreme to serve as president again. In another age, a guilty verdict would have immediately ended Trump’s campaign.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump arrives to court for his hush money trial at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City on May 30, 2024. Former President Donald Trump called his criminal hush money trial a "disgrace" on Thursday, after a New York jury found him guilty on all 34 criminal counts of falsifying business records. "This was a rigged, disgraceful trial," Trump told reporters outside the courtroom in Manhattan Supreme Court. With the jury's unanimous verdict, Trump became the first former U.S. president ever to be convicted of a crime. "May 30th, 2024 might be remembered as the day Donald J. CNN —CNN Opinion asked our contributors to weigh in on Trump’s conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Are there really that many voters whose view of Trump as a man, or politician, could be altered by bookkeeping irregularities? How many would-be Trump voters will be swayed against him because of miscategorized business expenses? Instead of validating Trump’s narcissism, Democrats should turn the camera away from Trump and toward the American people. Democrats should make the case that Trump’s policies would decimate the middle class and that ought to be a (metaphorical) crime.

Opinion | Objections to Alito’s Refusal to Recuse

To the Editor:Re “Alito Rejecting Calls to Recuse in Flag Uproar” (front page, May 29):Everyone has been focused on how Justice Samuel Alito can pretend to be impartial on Jan. 6 cases after the flag controversy. The greater issue is how this episode is yet another exposure of Justice Alito’s lack of judgment. Justice Alito’s inability or unwillingness to extract himself from the Jan. 6 cases that come before the Supreme Court inflicts a great deal more damage to its reputation and credibility. That leaves us stuck with a Supreme Court majority that is practicing politics when it is supposed to be providing legal guidance based on law. These should require justices to demonstrate pristine behavior and institute accountability so Justice Alito can understand how ludicrous is his decision not to remove himself from cases where he has a conflict.

"The Navy had good reason to be optimistic that the frigate program was positioned to deliver capabilities on the schedule it promised," the report said. Advertisement"To reduce technical risk, the Navy and its shipbuilder modified an existing design to incorporate Navy specifications and weapon systems," the report said. "However, the Navy's decision to begin construction before the design was complete is inconsistent with leading ship design practices and jeopardized this approach." In addition to scheduling delays and the halting of ship construction, the Navy has yet to demonstrate frigate propulsion and machinery control systems. However, the report suggests that scheduling delays coupled with changes made to the frigate testing process may allow the Navy to test these two unproven systems on land.

The strike was conducted using two munitions with small warheads suited for this targeted strike. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military’s spokesman, insisted that their munitions alone, used in a strike in Rafah, could not have ignited the deadly fire that killed dozens of people at a camp. Those statements, however, did little to quell a chorus of voices demanding accountability and a halt to the fighting, which came amid reports of another deadly strike in nearby Al-Mawasi on Tuesday. Across almost two weeks of controversy over the commencement speech that Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., one of the most useful pieces of commentary came from Kevin Tierney, writing in Catholic World Report. Tierney neither defended nor attacked Butker’s sweeping condemnation of modern secular culture and lukewarm forms of Catholic faith. Instead he identified the kicker’s worldview as part of a distinctive tendency that Tierney calls “DIY traditionalism” — a form of Catholic piety that offers a “radical emphasis on personal accountability, is inherently populist, and has little direct connection to Church authorities.”A little context: Butker is a Latin Mass Catholic as well as Travis Kelce’s teammate. Benedictine College is a conservative Catholic college that featured prominently in a recent Associated Press report on the rightward turn in American Catholic piety and practice. Butker also delivered a sweeping condemnation of the church’s bishops, whom he cast as weak-kneed bureaucrats and denounced especially for suspending Masses and disappearing from the lives of the faithful during the pandemic.

For those outside the Westminster bubble, the announcement felt less like a starting pistol than a final gasp. But unlike Sunak, who with his wife Akshata Murty is worth an estimated £651 million ($828 million), most of us can’t afford it. The British economy never fully recovered from the 2008 recession and, consciously or not, most people still feel the sting every day. As Sam Knight recently noted in the New Yorker, the average British worker is estimated to be £14,000 ($17,800) worse off per year now than they would be if earnings had risen at pre-crisis rates. Her disastrous mini-budget wiped £30 billion off the UK economy that autumn, according to independent think tank Resolution Foundation, and sent interest rates rocketing.

Whether today's activist investors contribute any genuine economic value is open for debate. As this year's proxy season draws to a close, defeat after defeat for activist investors in proxy fights this year – most prominently at Disney and Norfolk Southern – raises the question: Are activist investors increasingly getting de-activated, losing their credibility and power? These self-styled "activist investors" are distinct from the original activists who helped catalyze needed governance reforms two decades back. Many of today's activist investors are a far cry from the original, heroic crusaders for shareholder value who pioneered the activism space decades ago. However, given the failing financial performance of many of today's activist investors, their losing streak in proxy fights and increasing public rejection of their bullying tactics, the credibility and value of activist investors writ large is increasingly imperiled.

The decision by Microsoft to link executive compensation to successful cybersecurity performance is another is prompting discussions at other firms. One change the tech giant is making in response: linking executive compensation more closely to cybersecurity. In recent years, many Fortune 500 companies, including Apple, have added bonus pay tied to ESG metrics. The conversations about cybersecurity-linked executive pay have started taking place at other companies since Microsoft made its move, according to Aalap Shah, managing director at executive compensation consultant Pearl Meyer. The Benjamin Netanyahu-led country on Tuesday took the outrageous step of seizing a camera and other video equipment used by The Associated Press to broadcast a live feed of Gaza — a decision the country only reversed amid severe backlash from free press advocates and following a White House request. And on Tuesday, it used that same law to target the AP, ostensibly confiscating its equipment because it provided its video feed to Al Jazeera, one of its thousands of global clients. A screenshot taken from AP video showing a general view of northern Gaza as seen from Southern Israel, before it was seized by Israeli officials on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. While Israel bowed to pressure on Tuesday and returned the AP’s equipment, the government notably offered no public apology to the renowned wire service. As the AP noted after its equipment was returned Tuesday, the underlying issues are still unresolved.

A slew of major tech companies including Microsoft , Amazon , and OpenAI, on Tuesday agreed to a landmark international agreement on artificial intelligence safety at the Seoul AI Safety Summit. The agreement will see companies from countries including the U.S., China, Canada, the U.K., France, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates, make voluntary commitments to ensure the safe development of their most advanced AI models. In those sorts of extreme circumstances, companies say they will implement a "kill switch" that would see them cease development of their AI models if they can't guarantee mitigation of these risks. "It's a world first to have so many leading AI companies from so many different parts of the globe all agreeing to the same commitments on AI safety," Rishi Sunak, the U.K.'s prime minister, said in a statement Tuesday. "These commitments ensure the world's leading AI companies will provide transparency and accountability on their plans to develop safe AI," he added.
