AMPAS a decis în acest context să modifice termenul limită de lansare a filmelor eligibile la Oscar, de la 31 decembrie 2020 la 28 februarie 2021. Premiile Oscar sunt atribuite în fiecare an pe baza voturilor exprimate de cei aproximativ 9000 de membri ai Academiei de film americane (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - AMPAS).
