For the sixth time in Mega Millions lottery history, the jackpot prize is worth over $1 billion ahead of Tuesday night's 11 p.m. If you match all six numbers on your ticket, you'll have the choice between $1.1 billion paid out as an annuity over 30 years or taking home a lump sum payment of $525.8 million, per usamega.com. Most winners choose the lump sum option, even though it's less than half of the total jackpot amount. With the lump sum payout, winners are theoretically able to invest and start growing the funds right away. However, Mark Cuban, self-made billionaire and star of ABC's "Shark Tank," thinks winners should take the annuity instead.

Obamacare — signed into law on March 23, 2010, although many of its provisions didn’t kick in until 2014 — you probably wouldn’t have been able to get health insurance. Today you can, thanks to provisions in the law that prevent insurers from discriminating based on medical history and that subsidize insurance premiums for many Americans. And President Biden strengthened the program, notably by extending provisions eliminating the “cliff” that cut off subsides for many middle-class Americans. and almost succeeded in passing a bill that the Congressional Budget Office estimated would have left 22 million more Americans uninsured by 2026. wins control of Congress and the White House in November, it will once again try to bring back the bad old days of health coverage.

The IRS has received about 54 million tax returns so far and is issuing an average refund of $3,182, according to the agency's latest data. While a refund may feel like a significant amount of new money hitting your bank account, it's actually been your money all along. That's why financial pros generally advise clients to put any refund money toward financial goals rather than spending it. "I'd start with filling up your emergency fund with your tax refund, if that's not yet filled," she tells CNBC Make It. "For paying off debt, I like to use the debt avalanche method," she says.

Mega Millions jackpot prize has grown to $792 million ahead of Friday night's draw — its sixth highest total ever. To win the jackpot, you'll need to match numbers with all five white balls, plus the gold Mega Ball. If you win, you can take a 30-year annuity for the full jackpot amount, or an upfront cash lump sum that's worth about 48% of the jackpot. While the lump sum is much less than the annuity, winners often choose that option since they receive more money right away. The prize amounts for both lump sum and annuity amounts are calculated by usamega.com.

“It’s super scary,” a passenger told Taiwan’s United Daily News in a video upon returning to shore under the escort of a Taiwanese coast guard ship on Monday. “(The Chinese coast guard) chose a tourist vessel because it’s high profile – you would expect lots of people on the boat with cameras and phones,” he said. The stakes are high, as the increased presence and closer proximity of Chinese and Taiwanese coast guard vessels raise the specter of miscalculations that could potentially spiral into open conflict. Speaking to reporters about the inspection by the Chinese coast guard, Taiwan’s Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-kcheng highlighted such risks, saying the defense ministry is “very concerned” about potential miscalculations. Senators Grilled Tech Executives on Child Safety

Five of the country’s most prominent tech executives appeared at a hearing today on Capitol Hill, where they were berated by lawmakers for creating “a crisis in America” by ignoring the spread of child sexual abuse material on their platforms. Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee spent almost four hours needling the chief executives of Meta, TikTok, X, Snap and Discord. Some said the companies had “blood on their hands” and that users “would “die waiting” for them to make changes. The senators pressured the executives to say on the record if they support the Kids Online Safety Act, a bipartisan bill backed by dozens of senators but opposed by the A.C.L.U. Only Evan Spiegel of Snap and Linda Yaccarino of X said yes.

After beating Nikki Haley in New Hampshire on Tuesday, Donald Trump reaffirmed his position as the leading candidate to win the Republican nomination. That has business leaders facing the possibility of another Trump presidency, and their investors trying to figure out what it could mean for their bottom lines. During Blackstone’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday, an analyst wanted to know if uncertainty over who would win a likely Biden-Trump matchup could freeze deal flow. (“At the end of the day, do you think he’s going to be more interested in attacking the A.C.A. or something else?” he said of a potential Trump presidency.

Opinion | Bidencare Is a Really Big Deal
  + stars: | 2024-01-25 | by ( Paul Krugman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It’s less clear how much of the good news on these fronts can be attributed to Biden’s policies. One area where presidents do make a big difference, however, is health care. Trump was nonetheless able to create some erosion in the program, for example by cutting off funds for “navigators” that help people enroll. America still doesn’t have the universal coverage that is standard in other wealthy nations, but some states, including Massachusetts and New York, have gotten close. And this gain, unlike some of the other good things happening, is all on Biden, who both restored aid to people seeking health coverage and enhanced a key aspect of the system.

Vice President Kamala Harris warned on Monday that American freedom was “under profound threat” in a speech honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stands apart from the other civil rights leaders of the 20th century. director J. Edgar Hoover’s paranoia that a Black messiah would emerge to provoke this nation’s oppressed Black masses to revolution. But King was far from a lone messiah. Among those who took inspiration from King was Medgar Evers; they and Malcolm X formed what James Baldwin called the great trio of the civil rights movement. Evers, the then-32-year-old Mississippi field secretary for the N.A.A.C.P., first wrote to King in 1956, hoping to bring him to his home state.
