CNBC's Sarah Min breaks down how a rate cut could affect the S&P 500 . Welcome to U.S. rate cut week! Furthermore, jumbo hikes of 75 basis points were enacted between June 2022 to November 2022. But given that the rate cut has been so clearly telegraphed by the Fed, it's hard to imagine it not happening. This cut might not be big in terms of basis points, but it will be big in what it signals to markets.

Apple shares were down 3% on Monday, leading a drop in the wider tech sector. The slide came after analyst Ming-Chi Kuo warned of light iPhone 16 demand. The lack of demand for the newest iPhone is likely because Apple has yet to roll out its most anticipated new feature, Apple Intelligence, Kuo said. Advertisement"One of the key factors for the lower-than-expected demand for the iPhone 16 Pro series is that the major selling point, Apple Intelligence, is not available at launch alongside the iPhone 16 release," Kuo said in a Sunday note. "In that case, I believe that Apple will implement more aggressive iPhone product strategies in 2025 to stimulate market demand," Kuo said.

CNN —The United States reclaimed the Solheim Cup for the first time in seven years with a 15 ½ - 12 ½ victory over the Europeans on Sunday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. Team USA last won the Solheim Cup in 2017 with Europe winning in 2019 and 2021 before retaining the trophy in 2023 when the teams drew 14-14. 1 Nelly Korda led the USA’s challenge, winning both her matches as the USA underlined its dominance. While Europe looked to fight back on day two, Team USA constantly prevented the Europeans from clawing back the deficit and held on to lead 10-6 after the second day. Lower interest rates may impact your investment portfolio following the Fed's first rate cut. "They get spooked by something like policy changes and sell out of a diversified investment portfolio. "Generally, lower interest rates boost the economy as lending gets cheaper for consumers and businesses, " says Eckles. However, as interest rates fall, the attractiveness of these cash investments declines. The inverse relationship between bond prices and interest rates means that as rates fall, bond prices rise, providing another return component.

Swallowed eels escape via predator fish’s gills
  + stars: | 2024-09-13 | by ( Mindy Weisberger | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Dark sleeper fish (Odontobutis obscura) can gulp down young Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) whole, but the swallowed eels can wriggle back up through the digestive tract and out of the stomach, swimming to freedom through the bigger fish’s gills, scientists recently discovered. “Witnessing the eels’ desperate escape from the predator’s stomach to the gills was truly astonishing for us.”A Japanese eel exhibits circling behavior along a predator's stomach wall in this X-ray video footage. But while they observed swallowed eels wriggling tailfirst from dark sleepers’ gills, “we had no understanding of their escape routes and behavioral patterns during the escape because it occurred inside the predator’s body,” Hasegawa said via email. Once a predator swallowed an eel, the sated fish was quickly moved to a special tank where the X-ray video camera was ready to roll. On average, it took about 3 ½ minutes for a swallowed eel to reappear and swim away.

Japan’s defense ministry said at least two ballistic missiles from North Korea flew about 220 miles, to an altitude of about 60 miles. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who last week visited Seoul to reconfirm ties with South Korea ahead of his upcoming resignation, said Tokyo strongly condemned the launch and lodged a protest against North Korea. “We continue to make utmost efforts for monitoring and cooperate with the U.S. and South Korea,” Kishida said. After eight years of threatening to repeal the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, former President Donald Trump still doesn’t have a comprehensive plan to replace it. People in the U.S. pay roughly twice as much for health care than any other nation on earth. But is it feasible to create a new health care law that reduces the escalating costs? “Right now, Obamacare is the status quo in health care,” said Larry Levitt, executive vice president of health policy at KFF, a nonprofit group that researches health policy issues. Harris has committed to extending the subsidies; Trump has remained silent.

watch nowChina's property market has still not found a bottom despite all the turmoil in the past year, according to Standard Chartered CEO Bill Winters. Speaking to CNBC's JP Ong, Winters described the investing environment in China as "difficult," explaining that consumer confidence and international investor confidence was relatively low. "We know that the underlying source of a lot of the confidence questions is the property market, and the property market has not yet completely bottomed out, so it's been a slow grind down," he added. The danger, he said, is that a property market bubble that bursts in other markets has usually portended a financial crisis, and that is normally accompanied with more significant falls in GDP. As such, he thinks that it will be a bit uncomfortable in the short term, but fiscally, "that's going to be a good thing."
