The 2-year Treasury yield was last at 4.7931% after rising by more than two basis points. U.S. Treasury yields were higher on Wednesday as investors considered the state of the economy amid a series of key data releases. Yields slid earlier in the week as investors assessed the latest economic data. The state of the labor market is a key factor in the central bank's decision-making when it comes to monetary policy. More key labor market data is due Friday in form of nonfarm payrolls figures and the unemployment rate for May.

Back in April we covered the breakout in Southern Copper (SCCO) from $116 a share. I think it can hold that support again and, along with underlying copper futures, mount another attack on the highs. Copper demand just recently exceeded 25 million metric tons this year and with the explosion in AI and with the move towards clean energy, copper demand is expected to reach 40 million metric tons in the next 15 years. Turning to our focus stock, Southern Copper (SCCO), the chart is also pulling back into a very similar correction with anticipated support in the $115-$105 zone. Southern Copper beat their top and bottom line earnings estimates for Q1 in April, and looking ahead the growth is expected to continue.

CNN —Sales of new electric vehicles have started to slow, but the opposite is happening with used EVs. The used car sales website Carvana saw its used EV sales more than double since last year. While increases in used EV sales are huge, they still make up a small portion of overall used vehicle sales. Used EVs still cost more, on average, than used gas-powered vehicles, but they cost a lot less than new EVs. While prices for new EVs average around $63,000, prices for used ones average around $36,000, according to Cars.com.

Bad economic news so far has been mostly positive for the stock market, as investors worry over whether the Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates. The greenback often rises on bad news as investors seek the safety of cash and equivalents, while the stock market gains on good news. .SPX .DXY line 2024-04-01 Stocks vs. the dollar At the same time, economic data has generally deteriorated, or at least not met Wall Street forecasts. For the most part, bad economic news likely could help convince the Fed that the time is right to start lowering interest rates. Based on the prior two months, the unemployment rate would have to rise to 4.3% in May for that to happen.

Long before people develop dementia, they often begin falling behind on mortgage payments, credit card bills and other financial obligations, new research shows. What they found was striking: Credit scores among people who later develop dementia begin falling sharply long before their disease is formally identified. The issues start even earlier: The study finds evidence of people falling behind on their debts five years before diagnosis. “The results are striking in both their clarity and their consistency,” said Carole Roan Gresenz, a Georgetown University economist who was one of the study’s authors. Credit scores and delinquencies, she said, “consistently worsen over time as diagnosis approaches, and so it literally mirrors the changes in cognitive decline that we’re observing.”

Super Micro Computer emerged as an investor darling early this year, as Wall Street unearthed the stock, driving it higher with gains that rivalled even Nvidia's. After Nvidia reported blockbuster earnings last Wednesday, Super Micro's shares were rocky again. Read previewTwo years ago, the University of Georgia football icon and then-Senate candidate Herschel Walker was seen by many Republicans as a future star in the party. Walker, running against Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in the Georgia Senate race, won over many establishment politicians. Walker previously contributed $100,000 to the National Republican Senate Committee for a recount fund, and he also gave roughly $400,000 to charities, according to Politico. Brian Kemp — a conservative who clashed with Trump-aligned figures over the 2020 election — has largely bypassed the state party by utilizing his own political committee to fundraise. But Biden is eager to hold Georgia, as his 2020 win in the state was one of the biggest electoral triumphs for Democrats that year.

CNN —The summer movie season typically starts with a bang during the month of May and, particularly, during Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend (Friday through Monday) movie ticket sales are estimated at $128.3 million, according to Comscore data provided to CNN. In fact, the US box office is on track to have its lowest-grossing Memorial Day weekend since the $117.1 million seen in 1995, when “Casper” haunted the screens — and that’s not even adjusting for inflation. The tepid Memorial Day weekend continues what’s been a lukewarm start to the summer box office, a movie-going season that’s still reeling from the effects of last year’s Hollywood strikes. Industry experts agree that the 2024 box office has been sluggish so far , but remain hopeful that the box office can rebound by the end of the year and beyond.

Japanese stocks are enjoying a banner year, with foreign investors plowing into the market. Japanese investors are hesitant Japanese investors have long been skeptical of the local stock market after the asset price bubble burst in the early 1990s. If we apply a multiple of 21.6 on DuPont's business, it puts the enterprise value at $25 billion. So being conservative and using a 20 times multiple, DuPont's water business could have an enterprise value of $7.2 billion. Add these three up and the total enterprise value is about $52 billion. To get the equity value, we subtract the net debt (which is total debt minus cash) from the total enterprise value. If we subtract this from the $52 billion enterprise value, the total equity value could be worth $46.2 billion.
