Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the devices “a huge problem,” adding they were still investigating whether the shooters used a switch or another type of weapon. “Machine gun conversion devices have no place in our community,” US Attorney Prim Escalona said. Woodfin, the Birmingham mayor, noted that conversion devices are illegal federally but not under state law, and he called on the state legislature to ban the devices. Last week he participated in a demonstration at a Montgomery shooting range in which trained firearm experts tried (and failed) to aim while using the conversion devices. This year, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Glock, alleging the handgun company has failed to prevent the use of conversion devices on its weapons.

Some of the four people killed in a deadly Alabama shooting had "extensive criminal" histories and might have been killed in a "cowardly" murder-for-hire hit, authorities said Monday. CNN —The surviving co-founder of the company that owned the doomed Titan submersible is scheduled to testify Monday as a US Coast Guard panel continues to investigate what led to the implosion that killed five people last year. The Marine Board of Investigation’s two-week hearing began September 16 and is expected to resume Monday with OceanGate co-founder Guillermo Sohnlein, who in January 2013 left the company, set to testify, the Coast Guard’s hearing schedule shows. In 2009, Sohnlein and CEO Stockton Rush launched the Washington state-based company that created the experimental 23,000-pound submersible. The submersible lost contact with its support vessel, the Polar Prince, an hour and 45 minutes into its dive on June 18, 2023. China's youth unemployment rate in August rose to the highest level since the new system of record-keeping began in December, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed, amid an economic slowdown. China's urban unemployment rate across all age categories rose 5.3% in August, compared to a 5.2% climb in July. China paused reporting the youth unemployment rate for much of the latter half of last year while it reassessed its calculation methods. China's youth unemployment has also been affected by restrictive hiring policies amid a struggling economy as companies are refusing to hire recent college graduates due to the difficulty and costs involved in firing workers in China. "That's why the [overall] unemployment rate isn't that bad but the unemployment rate for youths is so high," Rein added.

While GM has withdrawn most of its previously announced electric vehicle targets, the automaker believes its EV sales momentum is finally building thanks to an expanding lineup of all-electric vehicles – spanning a price range of roughly $35,000 to more than $300,000. EV sales data provided to CNBC by the Detroit automaker, which publicly reports sales quarterly, shows a notable increase for GM through August. CNN —Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific has banned two passengers from its flights after an argument over seat-reclining etiquette descended into xenophobic insults. People from Hong Kong speak mainly Cantonese, whereas mainland Chinese mainly speak Mandarin. However, Cathay, Hong Kong’s flag carrier, has got into hot water with Chinese authorities in the past. In a statement announcing the dismissals, Cathay Pacific CEO Ronald Lam said he would personally lead a task force to improve service and avoid similar incidents in the future. “We need to ensure that all Cathay Pacific employees must at all times respect customers from different backgrounds and cultures, and that we provide quality services consistently across all markets that we serve,” he said.
