Chinese brands, led by Shenzhen-based BYD, sold 13.4 million new vehicles last year, while American brands sold about 11.9 million, the data showed. Japanese brands led with 23.59 million sales. "Negligence from legacy automakers, which has resulted in consistently high car prices, has inadvertently driven consumers toward more affordable Chinese alternatives," Jato senior analyst Felipe Munoz said in the report. Brands from China have made particular inroads in emerging economies, where Jato said one in five new car sales were made last year amid increased global demand. That is more than the total sales in the U.S. or Europe during the year," said Munoz.

Director of the National Economic Council Lael Brainard speaks at the White House in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 11, 2024. President Joe Biden's top economic advisor on Thursday unveiled plans to address trillions of dollars in expiring tax breaks enacted by former President Donald Trump. Some expiring individual provisions include lower federal income tax brackets, a higher standard deduction, a more generous child tax credit and doubled estate and gift tax exemption, among others. Expiring TCJA provisions could affect all Americans, but Brainard reaffirmed Biden's pledge to extend tax breaks only for those making less than $400,000. By comparison, former President Donald Trump has said he plans to extend all expiring TCJA provisions.

There are plenty of ways to get around without a license, from efficient public transportation systems to walkable neighborhoods and ride-share apps. Geologist M. King Hubbert developed the "peak oil" theory in the 1950s. He famously projected that U.S. oil production would peak between 1965 and 1970, which seemed accurate as U.S. oil production did peak around 1970. Hubbert's prediction about the U.S. oil production peak was largely accurate for conventional oil production. Still, global oil production has not followed Hubbert's anticipated timeline due to discoveries, technological advancements, and new extraction techniques. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and deep-water drilling have significantly increased oil production beyond what was initially thought possible.

New US sanctions against Russia have caused an immediate suspension of trading in dollars and euros on the country’s leading financial marketplace, the Moscow Exchange. “Due to the introduction of restrictive measures by the United States against the Moscow Exchange Group, exchange trading and settlements of deliverable instruments in US dollars and euros are suspended,” the central bank said. The move means banks, companies and investors will no longer be able to trade either currency via a central exchange, which offers advantages such as better liquidity and oversight. The central bank said it would use data from those trades to set official exchange rates. The central bank reassured people these deposits were secure.

CNN —A remote Australian community has taken revenge on a massive saltwater crocodile by eating the 3.6-meter (11.8-foot) beast blamed for devouring pets and chasing children. On Wednesday, police in the town of Bulla in Australia’s Northern Territory shot the crocodile after deeming it a “significant risk to the community.”The animal was barbecued after it was shot by police. Numbers have boomed in the decades since, with the Northern Territory now home to some 100,000 crocodiles, according to the local government. In April, a 16-year-old boy was killed by a crocodile in northern Queensland while attempting to swim to shore after his boat broke down. According to data from CryptoQuant, the flow of bitcoin leaving miners wallets for exchanges – which indicates a selling event – reached a two-month high last weekend. Additionally, miner selling through over-the-counter desks saw its biggest daily volume since late March. CryptoQuant shows the hourly transfer of bitcoin from miners to exchanges rose to more than 3,000 bitcoins on June 9. "Daily bitcoin miner revenues stand today at about $35 million, down 55% from their 2024 peak reached in March." That's mostly as a result of "depressed" transaction fees, however, rather than the slashing of miners' block reward at the halving.

The world’s largest experiment in driverless cars is underway on the busy streets of Wuhan, a city in central China with 11 million people, 4.5 million cars, eight-lane expressways and towering bridges over the muddy waters of the Yangtze River. A fleet of 500 taxis navigated by computers, often with no safety drivers in them for backup, buzz around. The company that operates them, the tech giant Baidu, said last month that it would add a further 1,000 of the so-called robot taxis in Wuhan. Across China, 16 or more cities have allowed companies to test driverless vehicles on public roads, and at least 19 Chinese automakers and their suppliers are competing to establish global leadership in the field. In addition to cities designating on-road testing areas for robot taxis, censors are limiting online discussion of safety incidents and crashes to restrain public fears about the nascent technology.

Even though the ETF now is up considerably from that point, many traders still have wanted nothing to do with it.
