A voter carries his ballot from a voting booth while voting in the New Hampshire U.S. presidential primary election in Manchester, New Hampshire, February 11, 2020. New Hampshire's secretary of state on Wednesday scheduled the state's presidential primaries for Jan. 23, 2024, extending its century-old streak of going first despite national Democrats' efforts to overhaul the nominating calendar. Republicans will kick off the nominating process with the Iowa caucus on Jan. 15, 2024. New Hampshire's primary eight days later will be a crucial opportunity for GOP candidates to show they can remain competitive against former President Donald Trump, the early front-runner for their party's presidential nomination. But Scanlan said that using racial diversity as "a cudgel" in a bid to rearrange the presidential nominating calendar sets "an ugly precedent."

Nearly 1 million chickens on a Minnesota egg farm will be slaughtered to help limit the spread of the highly contagious bird flu after it was confirmed there, officials said Monday. The Minnesota farm is the first egg-laying operation where bird flu has been found this year. Even after 940,000 chickens on the Minnesota farm are slaughtered, there will only have been about 3.4 million birds killed this year. DeSantis has pinned his chances of emerging as an alternative to Trump alternative squarely on Iowa. Reynolds is well-liked within the GOP and will break with long-standing Iowa tradition to endorse DeSantis. Reynolds had introduced DeSantis at political events in Iowa and appeared with Florida first lady Casey DeSantis — without publicly declaring her support. “Kim Reynolds apparently has begun her retirement tour early as she clearly does not have any ambition for higher office,” the Trump campaign said in an emailed statement. Reynolds is popular within the party in part for signing a school choice bill and strict abortion ban this year.

A Des Moines Register poll published Monday shows Haley tied with DeSantis for second in Iowa, which hold the first-in-the-nation GOP caucuses on Jan. 15. Haley and DeSantis are in an increasingly expensive battle against each other as they head into the third Republican primary debate next week. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Dragan Kesich made four field goals and Minnesota won at Iowa for the first time since 1999 to snap an eight-game losing streak in the series, holding the No. 24 Hawkeyes to 12 yards in the second half in a 12-10 victory Saturday. Down 10-3 at the half, the Gophers (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) held Iowa (6-2, 3-2) to minus-2 yards in the third quarter. BIG PICTUREMinnesota: The Gophers, coming off an week, found enough points against the Hawkeyes, wearing them down in the second half while taking advantage of Iowa’s offensive ineptitude. Iowa: The Hawkeyes’ offensive problems haven’t shown signs of improving, and a defense that was wearing down in the second half couldn’t find a way to stop the Gophers.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Highly pathogenic bird flu has made its first appearances in U.S. commercial poultry flocks this season, affecting one turkey farm in South Dakota and one in Utah. The outbreaks are the first reported among commercial flocks in the U.S. since the disease struck two turkey farms in the Dakotas in April. While wild birds often show no symptoms of avian influenza, infections in them are a concern to the poultry industry because migrating birds can spread the disease to vulnerable commercial flocks. South Dakota producers lost nearly 4 million birds last year. Iowa, the hardest-hit state, with nearly 16 million birds lost, hasn't recorded a case since March.

Iowa Democrats will now begin mail ballot registration on Nov. 1 and hold an in-person caucus - along with Republicans - on January 15. The results for the Democratic race will be released on March 5, on Super Tuesday. THE TAKEThe compromise honors Iowa's traditional role while ceding influence to more diverse states like South Carolina and Michigan. But President Joe Biden earlier this year replaced Iowa with South Carolina, a state with significantly more Black voters, and one that saved his 2020 presidential campaign. South Carolina will be followed by New Hampshire and Nevada one week later, and then by primaries in Georgia and Michigan.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Friday is expected to release a playbook on best practices for training workers as the low 3.8% unemployment rate and years of underinvestment have left manufacturers, construction firms and other employers with unfilled jobs. As part of the 2021 pandemic rescue package, state and local governments have committed $11 billion to worker training. The eight-page playbook being issued in conjunction with the remarks details possible models that the administration believes state and local governments can follow. Money also is going to supportive services for child care and transportation, which are two of the big reasons why people are unable to complete training or stay on the job. Iowa is making $26.6 million available to help employers make child care available, while Phoenix's airport is offering child care scholarships to workers.

Donald Trump is facing new blowback from anti-abortion activists for refusing to commit to national abortion restrictions and for calling Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' signing of a six-week ban on the procedure a “terrible mistake.”Speaking Sunday on NBC's “Meet the Press,” Trump repeatedly declined to say whether he would support a federal ban on abortion. Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, DeSantis campaign spokesman Bryan Griffin wrote of Trump: “If you want to appease Democrats, here’s your guy. “I was certainly disappointed with what I heard from President Trump today concerning the Florida Heartbeat Bill,” McCravy told The Associated Press, after watching Trump’s interview. “Laws protecting the unborn are not a ‘terrible mistake.’ They are the hallmark of a just and moral society,” she wrote on X.

The rivalry game between Iowa and Iowa State always ratchets up the intensity of both fan bases every year, even if the two programs are unranked as they are this season. Five Iowa State players who were projected to be starters before the season are suspended. Other football players are suspended as the two schools head into their 70th overall meeting in a series that began in 1894. Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers, running back Jirehl Brock, offensive lineman Jacob Remsburg, tight end DeShawn Hanika and defensive lineman Isaiah Lee were charged. Both teams won their openers last week, and the absences of the suspended players did not appear to make an impact.

The campaign trail will run as much through various court rooms as through the fabled rituals of an American election year. Furthermore, the events surrounding Trump’s denial of his 2020 election defeat have been in the public domain for years. But Trump’s team has already warned it may need up to three-and-a-half years to prepare his defense. His forceful opening gambit on the date suggests a strategy to ensure that any compromise date the judge arrives at will still be relatively early in 2024. The question of a trial date will likely wait for a subsequent hearing.

Nine Florida lawmakers will join Trump at the Iowa State Fair. This is just the latest way Trump has found to needle the Florida governor. The Iowa State Fair is a major event for presidential hopefuls, who often flip pork chops and gawk at the butter cow alongside Iowans and throngs of journalists. Trump previously raised eyebrows at 2015 State Fair when he offered children free helicopter rides. A representatives for DeSantis' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The comments were a thinly veiled attack on Mr. Trump, who has skipped events hosted by prominent evangelical Christian leaders and who recently picked a fight with Iowa’s popular Republican governor, Kim Reynolds. “I think anybody who’s not willing to do that is basically telling you that they don’t think they have to earn your vote,” he continued. “And I think that’s a mistake.”Both Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis, as well as the rest of the presidential field, are set to attend the Iowa State Fair, a major event on the political calendar that begins this week. Polling shows that Mr. DeSantis’s efforts are playing better in Iowa than in other parts of the country. Mr. Trump is also known to drop in at weddings held at Mar-a-Lago, the exclusive Palm Beach social club that serves as his home, as well as at his Bedminster golf resort in New Jersey.

Former President Donald J. Trump’s pull among likely Republican voters is less dominant in Iowa than it is nationwide, though he still leads his nearest rival, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, in the key early state by double digits, according to a new New York Times/Siena College poll. The survey of 432 likely Iowa caucusgoers was taken before a third indictment against Mr. Trump was made public on Tuesday, this one charging him with federal crimes connected to his efforts to cling to office after losing re-election in 2020. But any dent in his dominance in the Hawkeye state may have more to do with factors like personality flaws and voters’ fatigue after eight years of Trumpian drama than his latest legal travails. Iowa Republicans showed some real doubts about which candidate — Mr. Trump or Mr. DeSantis — is more moral, likable or able to beat President Biden in 2024.
