You can thank the cyclical weather pattern known as El Niño for that. Increased rainfall is likely in South America and severe drought in Australia, Indonesia and parts of southern Asia. El Niño may have played a role in that transformation over a scant 24 hours; the warmer sea surface temperatures associated with the weather pattern provide favorable conditions for hurricane development in the eastern Pacific. The human toll of these El Niño repercussions is immense. As we enter another year of El Niño, one that could be “historically strong,” the challenge is on for rich nations to coordinate and deepen their assistance to developing countries before they face these foreseeable consequences.

Late last year, it installed 38 chargers for electric trucks operated by Maersk at two sites in the Los Angeles area. There were 1.8 million conventional medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles operating in the state in 2021, according to data from the California Air Resources Board. Arnold said electric charging sites might be more lucrative than traditional industrial outdoor storage properties. The EV-charging business' chicken-and-egg problemOne of the biggest constraints to the development of charging sites is the availability of power. PDS operates about 320 diesel rigs, Gillis said, but because of the rules, will purchase "20 to 30 electric trucks" a year to steadily electrify its fleet.

Parts of the East Coast, particularly the Mid-Atlantic, may get more snow than normal because of that, he said. That means more rain in the South and extra storminess in the late winter, Gottschalk said. El Nino often means “unusual severe weather across the state of Florida because of a strong subtropical jet stream,” he said. He pointed to Washington’s paralyzing 2010 Snowmageddon storm that dumped more than 2 feet on the capital region during an El Nino. The Siberian snow cover, El Nino and other factors “indicate an overall mild winter,” he told The Associated Press.

Vehicles drive on the flooded Freeway 5 after an El Niño-strengthened storm brought rain to Los Angeles on Jan. 6, 2016. Lucy Nicholson | ReutersThe El Niño weather pattern is still active heading into the winter this year and it will mean the northern and far west portions of the U.S. will have a warmer-than-usual winter. El Niño, meaning "little boy" in Spanish, and La Niña, meaning "little girl" in Spanish, are opposite weather patterns driven by a change in the trade winds in the Pacific Ocean. This is the first time in four years that El Niño has been active as winter begins, according to the NOAA. While El Niño rains will alleviate ongoing droughts in some regions, it may also drive the development of drought conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

For many Palestinian Americans, there’s a sense of helplessness and hopelessness as they struggle to hear from loved ones in Gaza. But even before this week, getting to Gaza to visit family for Palestinian Americans was a lengthy, exhausting and difficult experience, and most people who live Gaza can never leave. Unlike Israeli Americans, Palestinian Americans say they have never been afforded the opportunity to freely help their loved ones in times of crisis. Palestinian Americans say they’ve never had the option to do the same. The S & P 500 closed at its bear market low a year ago Thursday — ending Oct. 12, 2022, at its lowest close since November 2020 . In hindsight, that dramatic turnaround was the start of a rally that saw the S & P 500 climb 22% from the close on Oct. 12, 2022, through Wednesday. Palo Alto Networks, meanwhile, has successfully pivoted to profitability, joining the S & P 500 as a result, and repeatedly demonstrated the quality of its cybersecurity platform. Indeed, an exchange-traded fund that gives each S & P 500 constituent the same influence — the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF — has advanced only 11.2% since Oct. 12, 2022. Viewed through the top-heavy rally lens, though, it's not a surprise to see a number of Club stocks underperforming the S & P 500.

LONDON--The wife of Scotland’s political leader said her parents are trapped in Gaza and are terrified for themselves and their extended family. Nadia El-Nakla, who is married to Scotland’s first minister Humza Yousaf, said her parents traveled to Gaza from their home in Dundee to visit relatives last week and were now stuck in the territory amid Israeli retaliation for the Hamas attack days earlier. “They are just terrified, absolutely terrified, about what is to come and what is happening right now as we speak,” she told BBC News on Wednesday. She said her aunt’s house was damaged by an Israeli attack. Yousaf, the son of Pakistani immigrants, has strongly condemned the Hamas attack and called on the U.K. government to pressure Israel and Egypt into allowing civilians to flee via the Egyptian border crossing.

Most foreign airlines have suspended or curtailed services, leaving passengers uncertain how to leave or reach the country and consular services struggling to keep up with demand for assistance, with priority given to those with missing relatives. Israel's parliamentary finance committee said late on Tuesday it would debate authorising state guarantees for providing war risk insurance for Israeli airlines. British Airways said it would suspend flights to Tel Aviv after diverting a flight from London back to Britain shortly before it was due to reach Tel Aviv, citing security concerns. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Washington remains in talks with U.S. airlines about flights to Israel. Passengers have complained of mounting costs especially for leaving Israel, but airlines deny driving up prices.

Five women, two men and three children were among those killed at the church in the Gulf Coast city of Ciudad Madero in Tamaulipas state, state governor Americo Villarreal said. Footage posted on social media showed the moment the church roof caved in, puffs of gray smoke billowing into the air, followed by the toppling of yellow brick outer walls. Mexican media reported that several children were baptized during the Sunday Mass at the church. Bishop Jose Armando Alvarez from the Roman Catholic Diocese of nearby Tampico said the church roof crumbled as worshippers were receiving communion and asked others to pray for survivors.

CNN —Water levels on the Mississippi River are nearing historic lows for the second consecutive year, triggering a drinking water emergency in Louisiana as ocean water flows upstream, unimpeded by the river’s uncharacteristically weak flow. Lower Mississippi River water levels are forecast to continue to drop through at least mid-to-late October, according to Dedeaux. A confluence of extremesWater levels on the Mississippi River began to plummet in early September, well ahead of the October drop last year. This outlook from the Climate Prediction Center shows how drought is expected to improve in many areas along the Mississippi River which desperately need rain. Sixty percent of the water that flows into the lower Mississippi River comes from the Ohio River, while the other 40 percent comes from the upper Mississippi River, Dedeaux told CNN.
