Latest interior ministry data shows over 132,000 migrants have reached Italy by boat so far this year against around 69,000 in the same period of 2022. Topics discussing the new launch attracted 380 million views on social media platform Weibo, with more than 800,000 discussions, including posts, comments and likes, on the iPhone 15. A survey by Chinese news portal Sina on the social media platform asking participants if they would buy the Mate 60 or iPhone 15 saw 61,000 votes for the Huawei device versus 24,000 for the iPhone 15. "Before Huawei's surprise launch, we projected Apple's sales in China Q3 and Q4 to be flat or slightly weaker than last year." "Sales (of the iPhone 15) are not going to be easy, especially since Chinese consumers are either being cautious in spending or shifted their focus to leisure or travel," he added.

Aug 29 (Reuters) - Globalstar (GSAT.A) on Tuesday named former Qualcomm (QCOM.O) top boss Paul Jacobs as its CEO, sparking a near 20% surge in the shares of the satellite firm behind Apple's emergency communication services. Jacobs, 60, is also a board member of IPO-bound chip firm Arm and will replace David Kagan, who is retiring after about 5 years as CEO. It will pay XCOM licensing fees including the issuance of about 60 million common stock shares valued at around $64 million. "Some of XCOM's leaders contributed to the original Globalstar system while at Qualcomm." Iridium Comunications (IRDM.O) partnered with Qualcomm earlier in May to develop emergency SOS messaging for Android users, going head-to-head with Apple.

A Ukrainian human-rights group says Russian commanders are charging families to retrieve remains. Crimea SOS accused the Russians of charging some $1,500 to bring the bodies of dead soldiers home. However, there have been reported instances of Russian army officers being accused of mishandling the bodies of their dead troops. Russia's defense minister Sergei Shoigu claimed in September 2022 — almost a year ago — that 6,000 Russian soldiers died in the first six months of the war. Researchers working with the BBC said in August that more than 30,000 dead Russian soldiers had been identified by name, suggesting an overall death toll far larger.

All three women received treatment for their injuries, some of which were more serious than others. The three women were in the middle of a wide stretch of the river on Wednesday evening when the otter appeared behind one of them and attacked, Royce explained. “I didn’t even get a chance to get the words, ‘There is an otter behind you,’ out of me before it attacked her,” Royce said. Royce’s face, arms, ears, hands, legs and ankle were all bit by the otter as it attacked for about five minutes. The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has posted signs at various recreational fishing sites advising people of otter activity in the area.

Cell service is down. Although strong winds can sometimes threaten cell towers, most are strong enough to handle the worst that even a Category 5 hurricane can bring. The smoke and flames can also attenuate signals because of the particulate density in the air.”If a tower collapses, cell networks could take months to restore. This means satellite phones, which often feature large antennas, can help provide voice, SMS, and data services anywhere on Earth, even without cell service. Although it’s unclear how long cell phone service could be down in affected regions, companies have been able to bring connectivity to disaster regions in the past.

A collection of these issues would undoubtedly be my favorite book that no one has heard of. I’ve always wanted to know who made this zine, and if there are any issues I am missing, and if I could republish them. Because of some scheduling issues, the only free days to do the audiobook came at the end of July. The day I had to narrate the book’s central trauma landed on the actual day it had happened 24 years earlier. But the best form of creative expression that takes friendship as a central concern is rap music.

Despite taking over a wearable lineup that included premium smartwatch lines like the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa, Google released its own namesake wearable in 2022 called the Google Pixel Watch. Google Pixel Watch vs. Fitbit Sense 2: Smartwatch performanceRick Stella/InsiderThe Pixel Watch relies on Wear OS for most day-to-day tasks, which makes it about as good of a smartwatch as you can get. Google Pixel Watch vs. Fitbit Sense 2: Health and fitness trackingRick Stella/InsiderWhen it comes to health and fitness tracking, the Sense 2 is the clear winner. The Fitbit app is also available for use with the Google Pixel Watch, but functionally, the Pixel just can't beat Fitbit at its own game. Google Pixel Watch vs. Fitbit Sense 2: Battery lifeThe Google Pixel Watch's battery life isn't anything special for a smartwatch, requiring a nightly recharge with regular use.

I speak as one of 25 TCM viewers chosen in a national contest to be a guest programmer on TCM for its 25th anniversary in 2019. Each of us was asked to introduce a film that meant something highly personal to us and to dedicate it to someone special in our lives. She sensed in that serendipitous moment that her father was still with her, and it sustained her. I chose the 1958 Oscar-winning musical “Gigi” and dedicated it to my wife. His gift was tickets to a performance of the show.

Six people have been accused of forging ballot signatures using the names of dead people, officials say. The people worked for a company that circulated a petition to get a Republican candidate on the ballot, according to court documents. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold said her office rejected an "unprecedented" number of signatures. The Colorado Secretary of State's Office rejected the petition because it "lacked the necessary 1,500 valid voter signatures to be included on the ballot," Byrne wrote in the affidavit. In total, the Secretary of State's Office rejected 3,417 of the 4,462 signatures turned in by Andersen, Secretary of State Jena Griswold said.

Mayor Francis X. Suarez of Miami filed the paperwork for a presidential campaign on Wednesday, setting him up to join an increasingly crowded field of candidates jockeying to overtake former President Donald J. Trump for the Republican nomination. Mr. Suarez, a 45-year-old Cuban American elected overwhelmingly twice to his post leading one of Florida’s biggest cities, is presenting himself as a fresh face for a party that has struggled in three consecutive elections as general-election voters soured on Mr. Trump. He is scheduled to give a speech on Thursday night at the Reagan Library in California. Supporters of Mr. Suarez announced a super PAC on Wednesday in tandem with his filing, beginning with an initial “six figure” ad buy in three early-voting states: Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. The committee, SOS America PAC, is starting off on solid financial footing, with almost $6 million left over from its previous iteration.

A predominantly red map of California shows the 1984 presidential election results, where former U.S. President Ronald Reagan won in a landslide. Online posts are falsely saying it shows results from the 2020 general election. However, it shows results from the 1984 presidential election, where only Alameda, Marin, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Yolo counties voted Democrat while the rest of the state voted Republican (here). The California Secretary of State (SoS) shared the 1984 presidential election results in an email to Reuters, where the results match the map being shared online. The map shows presidential election results in California for 1984, not 2020.

Apple execs didn't mention AI once during the company's WWDC keynote. It was a deliberate choice and a stark contrast to other Big Tech companies that have embraced the term. During Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon's first quarter earnings calls in April, AI was cumulatively mentioned 168 times, for example. Most other Big Tech companies would likely tout these as "AI innovations" to appeal to the current enthusiasm around the term. The word wasn't mentioned one time during the entire keynote, even though many rivals would likely use the word to describe the Vision Pro headset.

The Sos Enathos lead and zinc mine, extending 300 metres underground below lush vegetation, has been picked by the Rome government as its candidate to host the so-called Einstein Telescope (ET). Italy is betting that its 1.9-billion-euro ($2.09 billion)project can bring much-needed investment to the island of Sardinia, one of the country's poorest regions. Mirrors at the end of each tunnel will reflect laser beams whose lengths are affected by the passage of gravitational waves. "The mine has become the alternative to the mine," Mario Calia, the 63-year-old mayor of Lula, told Reuters. Calia, himself a former miner, said the project would leave Lula's unspoiled natural landscape untouched while bringing in investment.

And the Air Force Special Operations Command has even explored modifications to the MC-130J to allow it to land in water.
