Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently discussed a long-shot idea with Sen. Joe Manchin: Making a late entry into the US Senate race in West Virginia to try to hold on to his seat as an independent. Manchin, who threw cold water on the idea and is still planning on retiring from the Senate, confirmed to CNN that he’s discussed the last-ditch bid with Schumer. “I think that’s a long, long, long-shot scenario,” Manchin said of running as an independent candidate. Blankenship ran as a Republican but lost in the 2018 Senate primary, later switching parties in 2024 to run in the contested Democratic primary to fill Manchin’s seat. “I understand the scenario,” Manchin told CNN.

Waking up several times throughout the night is a natural occurrence often due to sleep architecture, which are the stages of sleep that one cycles through every night. When people naturally wake up in the night, they are more likely to remember it happening during the second half of the night. That’s when people typically have longer REM stage, light sleep, while the first half of the night has longer stages of deep sleep instead. The most important thing to do when waking up in the middle of the night is to resist looking at the clock, Peters-Mathews said. It’s also important to ensure the awakenings are not happening from something external, such as disturbances from your sleep partner, Peters-Mathews said.

CNN —Two men were charged with murder and other felony charges for their roles in the mass shooting after a Kansas City Chiefs championship rally last week, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Tuesday. Lyndell Mays, of Raytown, and Dominic M. Miller, of Kansas City, were both charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action, the prosecutor’s office said. Though they were both charged with murder, Miller’s firearm was the one that fatally wounded Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two and local DJ and radio host. The incident was at least the 48th mass shooting in the United States in 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which like CNN counts those in which four or more are shot, not including a perpetrator. Police initially said Wednesday they detained three people after the shooting, but one was later “determined to not be involved.”

The subscriber growth easily tops the 8.76 million paid membership adds Netflix reported in the third quarter. The company also blew past Wall Street's fourth-quarter expectations of 8 million to 9 million. The company posted revenue of $8.83 billion for the quarter, up from $7.85 billion in the year-ago quarter. That's up from 15 million that the company reported in November.
