The fruity energy drink debuts less than two months after bakery-cafe chain Panera Bread announced it was discontinuing its controversial Charged Lemonade, a beverage that lawsuits blamed for two deaths and referred to as a "dangerous energy drink." The Iced Energy comes in three flavors, including its most caffeinated flavor, Tropical Citrus, which has 205 milligrams of caffeine, according to Starbucks' website. Panera started phasing out the Charged Lemonade on May 7, and it has denied any wrongdoing, saying it removed the beverage as part of a broader menu transformation. Except for its Frozen Tropical Citrus Iced Energy with Strawberry Puree, Iced Energy is sugar-free, containing artificial sweeteners. Charged Lemonade and Iced Energy are part of a growing category called "functional beverages" that chains big and small are eager to jump into, according to experts.

Three years later, news surfaced that some Chinese athletes on that team were not subjected to the same anti-doping rules, casting doubt on the fairness of the competition. But retirees and full-time caregivers have been unable to take advantage of a strong job market. Now, consumers are largely left with the same buying power they had four years ago rather than having seen real income gains over that time that would have helped bolster their financial picture. The outlook for the job market also varies by race with the unemployment rate at 5.6% for Black workers and 5% for Hispanic workers. Food prices have risen around 25% over the past four years while Biden was in office. The rise in food prices has disproportionately impacted lower-income households, which spend around a third of their discretionary income on food, according to a 2022 Agriculture Department survey.

The country is confronting a perilous moment, internally estranged over politics and culture and as multiple foreign policy crises deepen. Biden has dedicated his term to expanding NATO to counter the Kremlin’s onslaught on Ukraine and threat to wider Europe. This leaves Biden badly needing to use Thursday night’s debate to convince voters that he can make their lives better — and soon. Post-game coverage of Thursday’s debate is certain to zero in on the best verbal jabs, soundbites and the stamina and energy of the rival candidates. But the most meaningful impact of the clash between Trump and Biden will only begin to unfold after noon on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025.

Covestro opens books to ADNOC over $12.5 billion takeover offer

German chemicals firm Covestro is giving ADNOC access to its books and stepping up talks based on an improved 11.7 billion euro ($12.5 billion) takeover offer, after more than a year of courtship by the Emirati energy company. Covestro said talks would proceed "in a timely manner" and there was no certainty of an agreement. A spokesperson for ADNOC welcomed Covestro's decision: "We look forward to jointly working with Covestro to swiftly progress due diligence for this important transaction," adding that this was ADNOC's final offer. ADNOC's initial informal offer to Covestro was reported in June 2023, but it wasn't until September last year that the German company entered into open-ended formal discussions. In December, it agreed to buy European chemical producer OCI's stake in ammonia and urea producer Fertiglobe for $3.6 billion.

Doug Burgum, a possible Trump vice presidential pick, tried to reset the balance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. Fewer voters worry about the cognitive health of Trump, who is only three years younger at 78. “He beat Paul Ryan,” Trump said, referring to the vice presidential debate in 2012 when Biden dispatched Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s running mate. There is growing speculation about Trump’s approach after his hyper-aggressive and angry performance in the first debate against Biden in 2020 backfired. Unlike Trump, who spent the weekend creating headlines, Biden hunkered down at the presidential retreat in Catoctin Mountain Park north of Washington.

The growing electricity demand from corporate America, particularly Big Tech, and the retirement of coal plants across the U.S. are creating a major opportunity for renewable energy, according to UBS. UBS sees solar and wind supplying 40% and 30% of the power demand, respectively, while natural gas will meet the remaining 30%. At the same time, "there is a straight line of direct incremental demand and financial support for renewables as corporate electricity demand increases through their 100% clean energy or 100% renewable commitments," the analysts said. Overall, solar will grow to 12.5% of electricity generation by 2030, up from less than 6% in 2023, according to UBS estimates. "There is likely a substantial market opportunity to provide reliable electricity generation and direct infrastructure for data centers," the analysts said.

Almost all business books will tell you not to mix business with pleasure. To me, hearing "Don't start a business with your partner" sounds as outdated as "Choose a company with a good pension, and you're set for life." Complications are bound to arise from all interpersonal relationship dynamics, so why not start a business with someone who knows you inside and out? For all the aforementioned reasons, starting a business with my husband has actually strengthened our relationship. Running a business, especially with your partner, is one day at a time, too.

The group, Stand Up America, is kicking off the $1 million campaign on the second anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which overturned the right to an abortion and convulsed the country’s politics in its aftermath. For years, Republicans have made the courts — especially the Supreme Court — a central issue in federal elections. The vacancy on the Supreme Court during the 2016 election was a central force behind Donald J. Trump’s victory. Among voters who said the Supreme Court was the “most important factor” in their decision, 56 percent cast a ballot for Mr. Trump, according to exit polls. This year, Democrats are trying to harness that same energy: Though there is no current vacancy on the court, there is potential for a president to make appointments in the next administration.

Opinion | Jamaal Bowman’s Political Malpractice
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Michelle Goldberg | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Now Israel’s champions, many of whom have never been comfortable with Bowman, are striking back, capitalizing on a political environment transformed by Oct. 7. Bowman’s challenger is the Westchester County executive, George Latimer, who refuses to criticize Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, putting Latimer not just to Bowman’s right but also to the right of President Biden and Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader. I think Sanders was exaggerating, but the contest is probably the most important congressional primary this year. It’s setting a precedent for big money interference in local politics and tearing at the longtime progressive alliance between Black people and Jews. There is something deeply admirable about his refusal to subordinate his values to political expediency.

Jordan Bardella, the president of France’s far-right National Rally, insisted at a news conference on Monday that he would be a prime minister for all French people if his party won the country’s upcoming snap elections, even as he defended his party’s proposal to bar French citizens with dual nationalities from certain “sensitive” jobs. Mr. Bardella spent much of the event focusing on his priorities should he become prime minister — drastically reducing immigration, toughening sentences for those convicted of certain crimes and lowering energy prices — if his nationalist party won a snap election for France’s lower house of Parliament. The election was called this month by President Emmanuel Macron and is being held in two rounds, on June 30 and July 7. “We are ready,” Mr. Bardella told journalists at a marble-adorned venue in a plush neighborhood of Paris, as he sought to dispel criticism from Mr. Macron and from a new alliance of left-wing parties that the National Rally is unfit and unworthy to govern. While the National Rally is leading in the latest polls, ahead of the left-wing alliance and of Mr. Macron’s centrist alliance, it is unclear if the party will win enough of the lower house’s 577 seats to secure an absolute majority and form a government.

Oil demand will rise for another 10 years, though producers are pulling back on new investment. The bank estimated oil demand would peak around 110 million barrels a day in 2034. AdvertisementThe global oil market could run into a supply shortage as peak demand is still a decade away, according to Goldman Sachs analysts. That's due to rising oil demand in Asia and increasing demand for petroleum products, the analysts said. "While peak oil demand is still a decade away, capital is slowing for the production of crude oil and oil products, contributing to constrained supply in the medium term," they later added.
