Mortgage rates were forecast to go down in 2025. Expectations of higher inflation and more government debt under Trump have helped mortgage rates rise in recent weeks. Why mortgage rates rose ahead of the election — and are still high nowMortgage rates went down a lot in September, with 30-year rates dropping near 6%, according to Freddie Mac. How Trump's policies could lead to higher mortgage ratesZhao says that right now it's "nearly impossible" to predict where mortgage rates will go in 2025. More supply would help moderate home price growth, improving affordability even if mortgage rates remain high.

Bank stocks have popped since President-elect Donald Trump's win, but their move eight years ago suggests this rally still has more upside. Drilling down to bank stocks, specifically, within financials still shows that the group could have room to run. In 2016, bank stocks outperformed by 11.5 percentage points, compared to 6.9 points this year, according to the note. Bank stocks have seen big moves since Trump's win, as investors react to the expectation of a lighter regulatory touch from his administration. And while postelection rally for the broader market has cooled this week , bank stocks still look like one of the bests going forward, Harvey said.

When asked how they racked up so much debt, the couple mentioned emergencies like a flood, a car accident and other unexpected costs. They could feasibly tap their savings and investments to wipe out their credit card debt almost immediately. Yet they also owe $40,000 in credit card debt, they told self-made millionaire and money expert Ramit Sethi on a recent episode of his "Money for Couples" podcast. Even high earners can find themselves under a mountain of credit card debt if they let their spending go unchecked. Then, they can institute a standard operating procedure with rules, such as putting cash windfalls toward their credit card debt or discussing purchases over a certain price.

If this year's closures are any indication — and if the economy worsens — they won't be alone. 2025 is still more than a month away, but it's already shaping up to be another rocky year for retail. Analysts at UBS project the total number of US retail closures could reach 45,000 over the next five years. For one thing, even healthy retailers like Walmart and Target periodically review and trim their store fleets in the normal course of business. In any event, the year hasn't even begun, but nearly 1,500 retail closures are slated — already roughly half the amount BI has tracked for full-year totals in recent years.

Protesters used a truck to smash through the metal gates surrounding the parliament in the capital Sukhumi. Eshsou Kakalia, an opposition leader and former deputy prosecutor general, said the parliament building was under the control of the protesters. “We will now seek the resignation of the current president of Abkhazia,” he was quoted by Russia’s Interfax news agency as saying. CNN —The Federal Aviation Administration says an air traffic controller’s instructions kept an American Airlines flight from hitting mountains near Honolulu International Airport in Hawaii. The agency is investigating the incident on American flight 298 just after takeoff, bound for Los Angeles early Wednesday morning. “An air traffic controller instructed American Airlines Flight 298 to perform an expedited climb after the crew did not make the assigned turn while departing from Honolulu International Airport,” the FAA says. “The controller’s actions ensured the aircraft remained safely above nearby terrain.”Audio from LiveATC.net captures the Honolulu air traffic controller telling American 298 to “expedite your climb … through terrain” and to turn right. Flight tracking data shows by the time the flight reached the terrain, the flight was at least 1,500 feet above mountain peaks.

The global 60/40 strategy has seen a 27% cumulative return since 2022 through Oct. 31, according to Vanguard data. Traditionally, stocks and bonds move in opposite directions, which helps lower the volatility of this traditional portfolio. But that didn't work in 2022, when stocks and bonds both suffered and the 60/40 tanked, which had many declaring the strategy dead. The 60/40 portfolio tends to be shorthand for a balanced, diversified portfolio, with specific allocations based on investors' individual needs. For instance, Morningstar's index that reflects a 60/40 portfolio is up about 15% year to date.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is bypassing traditional FBI background checks for at least some of his Cabinet picks while using private companies to conduct vetting of potential candidates for administration jobs, people close to the transition planning say. It also reflects Trump’s deep mistrust of the national security establishment, which he derides as the Deep State. If Gaetz does not participate in the vetting process, the FBI could still try to do a basic investigation at the request of the Senate. Instead, Trump’s transition team has been focused on conducting its own internal vetting of candidates for top administration jobs. So if Trump’s team continues to skirt the vetting process, those tapped for key roles wouldn’t be able to receive briefings until then.

CNN —The United States has returned more than 1,400 looted artifacts worth $10 million to India as part of an ongoing initiative to repatriate stolen art from countries across South and Southeast Asia, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday. The trafficked goods recovered include items that, until recently, were on view at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The DA’s office obtained an arrest warrant for him in 2012though he remains in custody in India, pending his extradition to the US. Since its creation over a decade ago, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Antiquities Trafficking Unit –– a task force of lawyers, investigators and art experts –– has recovered 5,800 antiquities valued at almost $460 million. In July, the US and India signed an agreement to protect cultural property by preventing illegal trades and streamlining the process of returning stolen antiquities back to India.

CNN —If you saw an enormous, deadly funnel-web spider sitting on her egg sac, your first instinct might be to run away. Funnel-webs, whose most dangerous species lives in and around Sydney, are known for their deadly, fast-acting venom. The zoo is the sole supplier of funnel-web spider antivenom, which it produces by milking the spiders collected. “We want to encourage the spider with her egg sac into the jar in one movement, trying not to make her so angry that she destroys the egg sac,” Teni says in the video.
