A few steps into his early-morning run, Purushottam Sahu struggled to breathe. Overhead, a thick brown-gray haze blanketed the sprawling forest park in New Delhi where he and other joggers, yoga enthusiasts and dog owners were keeping to their daily habits despite official warnings against exerting themselves in the toxic air. “We are all jogging faster toward death,” said Mr. Sahu, 46. “Because we have no other choice.”Every year in the late fall, as air pollution in the Indian capital climbs to noxious extremes, the government takes emergency measures like closing schools, restricting traffic and banning construction. But for the region’s 30 million inhabitants, life must go on, and for many in this urban expanse of lush parks and morning strolls, that means trying to remain active.

Mendoza, a former fighter for the now-disbanded Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas, dragged her children back inside the house. In interviews with Reuters, those people recounted how the attacks left conservation projects adrift, with conservationists withdrawing from environmental protection works because of fear of more violence. Municipal data from local environmental authorities and the Colombian Institute of Meteorology (IDEAM) also showed that in the year after each killing, deforestation at a local level was worse than national trends. Santofimio's killing brought his hard-fought conservation project to a halt. In the tree nursery, which stopped work after Santofimio's killing, saplings bask in the dappled sunlight beneath protective nets.

The White House sought to pin blame for the outlook change, which cited the high deficit and rising interest rates, on Republicans. "Moody's decision to change the U.S. outlook is yet another consequence of congressional Republican extremism and dysfunction," White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said. House Republicans hope to vote on Tuesday on a stopgap measure, which could extend discretionary funding for federal agencies into mid-January. Representative Chip Roy, a prominent member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, said he could accept a stopgap measure that also contains aid to Israel in its war with Hamas. "This two-step continuing resolution is a necessary bill to place House Republicans in the best position to fight for conservative victories," Johnson said in a statement after announcing the plan to House Republicans in a conference call. The House Republican stopgap contained no supplemental funding such as aid for Israel or Ukraine. She said "House Republicans are wasting precious time with an unserious proposal that has been panned by members of both parties." CNN —Lahore has become the latest megacity to shut down as pollution chokes swathes of South Asia, where nearly 50 million people have been breathing toxic air for nearly a week. New York City's new rat-killing method has wiped out rats on a strip in the Upper East Side. The method involves pumping carbon monoxide into rat burrows, ultimately suffocating the rodents inside. Still, it will likely take a lot more than that to take out New York City's rats for good. Munshi-South said similar methods have been used in the past, including with dry ice in parks in lower Manhattan that had hundreds of rat burrows. The carbon monoxide method can also only be used in a well-ventilated, outdoor area to avoid poisoning the person applying it or other people, Munshi-South said.
