The world’s largest coral has just been discovered in the southwest Pacific Ocean, scientists announced Wednesday. It’s three times larger than the previous record-breaker in American Samoa, according to Pristine Seas, and longer than a blue whale, the planet’s biggest animal. Steve Spence/National Geographic Pristine SeasA diver swims alongside the mega coral, which is made up of nearly 1 billion polyps. “Making a discovery of this significance is the ultimate dream,” said Paul Rose, a National Geographic Pristine Seas expedition leader. Yet while the mega coral remains vulnerable, he believes its health and longevity do provide a glimmer of hope.

CNN —As he stood inside the echoing hall of the prison, Matt Gaetz seemed impressed. It was July, and Gaetz — who will oversee the Federal Bureau of Prisons if he becomes attorney general — was visiting El Salvador’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), where gang leaders and murderers are locked up and from which they are never released. “This is the solution” for El Salvador, Gaetz added, in a video released by Bukele. The merch will be 🔥🔥🔥”If you need more evidence of how silly this whole thing is, note (as many commentators did online) that the efficiency department is being overseen by two people. On the campaign trail last month, Musk was asked how much he thought he could cut from the nation’s $6.5 trillion budget. Musk would be lucky to find $200 billion in the federal budget, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said at the Economic Club of New York on Tuesday. Even Trump joked to House Republicans on Wednesday that he can’t get rid of Musk, a source in the room told CNN. And that means Musk himself, as Tesla’s largest individual shareholder, is $55 billion richer today than he was a week ago.

AdvertisementIt was perhaps inevitable that Elon Musk — a tech titan and a prolific gamer — would try to turn government spending into a game. It's a natural move for Musk, who came up in the tech world in the early 2000s, as "gamification" took hold. "That's that kind of logic that you end up having if you're not really cautious about how it's designed." AdvertisementFor the government, that might hinge on what counts as waste and whether Musk's leaderboard can get people to agree. Otherwise, Hon said gamification might have short-term benefits but backfire in the long term as important, less-tangible factors are crowded out by overemphasizing one metric.

Powell said more rate cuts are likely underway because the economy’s current trends and dynamics are expected to remain in place, at least in the short run. “We are moving policy over time to a more neutral setting,” Powell said in prepared remarks for an event in Dallas. It’s also too soon for Fed officials to conclude that October data is indicative of any new trend. While additional hot inflation reports could be factored in to the Fed’s decisions, officials are also looking at the US labor market closely. There’s also been tension between Trump and Powell, whom the president-elect first nominated in 2017 to steer the central bank.
