But Warren Buffett has no reason to be worried. Shares of Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB) are up about 5.5% in 2022. Berkshire has big stakes in Coca-Cola (KO) and Kraft Heinz (KHC), which are each up around 10% this year. Buffett turns 93 next August while Berkshire vice chair and long-time Buffett confidant Charlie Munger will celebrate his 99th birthday on New Year’s Day. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren has introduced a bill with Republican Sen. Roger Marshall that would crack down on money laundering in the crypto world.
CNN —Even as President Joe Biden and ex-President Donald Trump move toward a rerun of the most turbulent White House race in modern history, many voters are pining for a break from the past – and the present. A new CNN/SSRS poll shows that 6 in 10 Republicans and GOP-leaning independents want their party to nominate someone other than Trump in 2024. A Biden versus Trump race would raise questions over whether a bitterly polarized political system, where democracy itself is at stake, has lost the capacity for self-renewal that has always been an American strength. The CNN poll shows Biden on an upward trajectory and in a better position in his party than Trump is in his. The question of his age, however, might be less important if Biden faces Trump, who is already 76.
Ellis Hobbs began trading stocks from his mobile phone in 2016. During this time, he heard about trading stocks from a colleague he had been doing business with, he said. It prompted him to apply to Sykes' Millionaire Challenge, an online educational and training course that helps beginners learn to day trade. That same year, he started trying to trade stocks from his mobile phone. He deposited enoughcash into his brokerage account to meet the pattern-day-trader rule, which requires a minimum $25,000 deposit to day trade.
U.S. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell holds a news conference after Federal Reserve raised its target interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point in Washington, September 21, 2022. Kevin Lamarque | ReutersCall it a sign of the times where a half percentage point interest rate increase from the Federal Reserve is considered looser monetary policy. In 2022, they've done it five times — four times for three-quarters of a point and once for a half percentage point — with Wednesday's widely anticipated 0.5 percentage point move to be the sixth. Wednesday's meeting of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee will bring an assortment of moves to chew on. The 'dot plot' and the 'terminal rate'That "terminal rate" of which Masotti spoke references the expected end point for the Fed and its current rate-hiking cycle.
WASHINGTON, Dec 14 (Reuters) - The United States is prepared to help China deal with a surge of COVID-19 infections if Beijing requests assistance, the White House said on Wednesday. John Kirby, the White House national security spokesperson, told reporters that China has not requested help at this stage. "We have made that point that we are prepared to help in any way they might find acceptable. China began shifting away from the "zero COVID" policy just this month, after protests against the economically-damaging curbs that had been championed by President Xi Jinping. The change has spurred concerns about a surge in COVID cases.
LONDON, Dec 13 (Reuters) - George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984", set in an imagined future where totalitarian rulers deprive their citizens of all agency in order to maintain support for senseless wars, has topped electronic bestseller lists in Russia. The novel is the most popular fiction download of 2022 on the platform of the Russian online bookseller LitRes, and the second most popular download in any category, the state news agency Tass reported on Tuesday. And last month the Kremlin's spokesman said there had been no attacks on civilian targets, despite wave after wave of bombardment of Ukrainian power facilities that have left millions without heat or light in the depths of winter. However, the Russian translator of a brand new edition of "1984" sees the parallels to Orwell's novel elsewhere. CNN —The familiar tunes of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” transport us. In 1965, when “A Charlie Brown Christmas” first aired, Christmas jazz wasn’t exactly a thing. The musical formula they created didn’t just make “A Charlie Brown Christmas” an instant hit. “Bossa nova was one of the things that helped smooth its way to popularity.”A still from 1965's "A Charlie Brown Christmas." She then rebuffed White House condemnations of her comments by insisting she was joking. Smith has also issued a flurry of grand jury subpoenas since Thanksgiving, including to ex-Trump adviser Stephen Miller and two former White legal counsels. A judge on Monday formally dismissed Trump’s case challenging the Mar-a-Lago evidence collection and in which she had appointed a special master. If a moment of truth is approaching for Trump, the same can be said of Garland and the DOJ. Trump has already tried to use claims that justice is being weaponized against him as rocket fuel for his 2024 presidential bid.
Russia and Ukraine are not currently engaged in talks to end the fighting, which is raging in the east and south and reached Kyiv again on Wednesday. Zelenskiy said this week Russia should start withdrawing by Christmas as a step to end the conflict, Europe's biggest since World War Two. Moscow rejected the proposal outright, saying Ukraine must accept the loss of territory to Russia before any progress can be made. “I talk on etiquette issues all year long, and tipping is the one that always gets thousands of comments. The findings are a mixed bag for service providers, with some good news and some bad news about what is coming their way. But when it comes to holiday tipping, people just do not know what to do. That is called tipflation or tip creep, Farley says, and you should feel under no moral obligation to do so. But it's better to focus on the ongoing service providers in your life, who should be recognized with a healthy year-end tip.
Supply-Chain Issues Slow Global Arms Sales

The U.S. and its allies have sent billions of dollars of arms stocks such as shells to Ukraine. Supply-chain snarls are threatening to break a seven-year run of rising global arms sales, even with increasing demand from the war raging in Ukraine and simmering Taiwan-related tensions. Sales by the world’s 100 largest defense companies rose 1.9% last year to $592 billion, slowing from prepandemic levels and led by gains among suppliers in Europe and Asia, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a think tank.
Traders are largely expecting policymakers to make a 50-basis-point rate hike, a smaller move than the previous four 75-basis-point increases. But next week's adjustment isn't what's top of mind for Wall Street's top Fed commentators — they're looking ahead to next year. To Bridgewater chief investment officer, Rebecca Patterson, the Fed would be justified in surprising markets by holding rates higher for longer. Sustained elevated rates are going to usher in dramatic changes to the economic landscape — and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers agrees. The price cap on Russian oil is "immaterial" and won't make a significant difference on market pricing, according to Vanda Insights.
Elon Musk isn't the first — or necessarily most powerful — exec to take on Apple's App Store fees. Industry insiders from developers to CEOs have long decried the 30% fee, dubbed the "App Store tax." At the same time, Musk's riches and influence may not be enough to turn the tide and get Apple to relent. A high-profile lawsuit, global regulators, and major companies have all tried changing Apple's app payment systems with little success. Regulatory bodies in the United States, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and other countries with significant iPhone users have also set their sights on Apple's App Store payment structures.
U.S. shoppers spent $35.27 billion online overall during Cyber Week, the period from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday. But the modest pickup trounced the paltry 2.9% increase in sales during China's Singles Day, an 11-day shopping festival ending November 11, hosted by Alibaba and other Chinese e-commerce firms. Originally, Singles Day was an unofficial Chinese holiday on Nov. 11 (11/11) to celebrate people who were not in relationships. These days, brands use Singles Day to clear inventory and experiment with new products. With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging in China, "it wont be fair to can compare" Singles Day with Cyber Week, Chernev said, as Americans are shopping with fewer restrictions.
Still, politics have spilled into the World Cup, the first to be held in a Middle East country. We don't have voice in Iran," said an Iranian living in the United States who gave his name only as Sam. Steve Garcia, from Phoenix, Arizona, said the United States and Iran had their differences but could come together in sport. The United States has imposed sanctions on Iranian officials over the crackdown on protesters. When their soccer teams clashed in the 1998 World Cup, Iran emerged with a 2-1 victory.
Qatar, which has strong ties with Washington and friendly relations with Tehran, has staked its reputation on delivering a smooth World Cup, beefing up security at Iran games and banning some items deemed inflammatory, like Iran's pre-Revolution flag. The Qatar official, when asked about fans' security concerns and complaints over restrictions, said authorities would ensure every match at the World Cup is "safe and welcoming for all spectators". Items that "could increase tensions and risk the safety of fans" would not be permitted at stadiums, the official said. He had heard about trading stocks from a friend and began to take up an interest in it. Kellogg began to notice the stock market trending negatively in November and December. On September 7, Kellogg attempted to buy the dip on Globalstar, Inc. (GSAT) after the stock's price spiked to $3 intraday. Sergei Surovikin, nicknamed "General Armageddon" by the Russian media for his reputed ruthlessness, on Nov. 9 recommended Moscow's forces quit Kherson and the west bank of the River Dnipro where they were dangerously exposed. Simonyan urged Surovikin, a hulking shaven-headed figure who has been shown on TV speaking in clipped Russian military language, to ignore "nonsense" from critics, a reference to influential military bloggers unhappy about his retreat. Nor is taking new ground in the east against a highly motivated and Western-equipped Ukrainian military an easy task, especially in the winter. The appointment of Surovikin on Oct. 8 was the first time Russia had publicly named an overall commander for its forces in Ukraine. With the exception of the city of Lysychansk, in eastern Ukraine, he said all the territory Russia held looked defensible.
GOP Reps. Virginia Foxx and Jason Smith began oversight actions on Biden's student-debt relief. It comes as Biden's debt relief remains on hold due to rulings from two federal courts. While Democrats maintained control over the Senate in the midterms elections, Republicans managed to win a slim majority over the House — and they're likely to use that power to investigate the Biden administration. They have supported the two lawsuits that have successfully put a pause on the implementation of the debt relief. The department has also taken matters to the Supreme Court, most recently appealing the decision of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals to continue its pause on Biden's debt relief.
An apartment unit resident likely caused an explosion and fire that injured 14 people and brought down part of a Maryland apartment building as he took his own life, authorities said Friday. His manner of death was suicide, police Chief Marcus G. Jones said at a news conference Friday. “He made statements that were indicative of intentions of suicide,” Jones said, basing the finding on witnesses who knew the resident. During a news conference Thursday, County Fire Chief Scott E. Goldstein called his unit “our apartment of focus,” but he did not say why. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Now, a woman from Austin, Texas, has come forward because she nearly died when she couldn’t get a timely abortion. “We found out that we were going to lose our baby,” Amanda said. “To see in a matter of maybe five minutes, for her to go from a normal temperature to the condition she was in was really, really scary,” he said. It’s the wrong time for Trumponomics

NEW YORK, Nov 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump tried to juice U.S. economic growth by enacting massive tax cuts and championing lower interest rates. As he sets his sights again on the White House, the country is turning its back on Trumponomics. The U.S. Federal Reserve has been jacking up interest rates in hopes of weakening demand and easing the climb in prices. Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss proposed tax cuts for Britain's top earners and homebuyers in a mini-budget revealed in September, posing the policy as a way to spur growth. Surging inflation prompted the Fed to start raising interest rates in March to cool demand and slow price growth.
For years, the question was whether companies would be held accountable for an overdose crisis that a flood of prescription drugs helped spark. Lawyers representing local governments said the company would pay most of the settlement over the next year if it is finalized. The CVS and Walgreens deals would have to be accepted first by a critical mass of state and local governments before they are completed. In the 2000s, most fatal opioid overdoses involved prescription drugs such as OxyContin and generic oxycodone. In recent years, opioid deaths have soared to record levels around 80,000 a year.

But Xi and Putin have grown increasingly close in recent years, and reaffirmed their partnership just days before Russia invaded Ukraine. A statement from the Chinese foreign minister said Xi told Biden nuclear weapons cannot be used and nuclear wars cannot be fought. G20 leaders will denounce the use of, or any threat to use, nuclear weapons, according to an early draft of a G20 statement seen by Reuters.
TOKYO, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Britain and the euro zone economies are likely to tip into recession next year, Morgan Stanley said, but the United States might make a narrow escape thanks to a resilient job market. "Risks are to the downside," the reports said, projecting the global economy to grow by 2.2% next year, lower than the International Monetary Fund's latest 2.7% growth estimate. read moreNext year, Morgan Stanley predicts a sharp split between developed economies "in or near recession" while emerging economies "recover modestly" but said an overall global pickup would likely remain elusive. Central banks across the globe have raised interest rates this year to curb raging inflation, and in the United States, Morgan Stanley predicted the Federal Reserve to keep rates high in 2023 as inflation remains strong after peaking in the fourth quarter of this year. "The cumulative effect of tight policy in 2023 spills over into 2024, resulting in two very weak years," the report added.
