Opinion | Orange Skies, Red Alerts and the Future

Not with a bang — that is, a sudden, universal catastrophe — but with a series of smaller, more local catastrophes that keep getting bigger and more widespread. I’ve been seeing a surprising number of complaints about the amount of media space devoted to New York’s orange skies and red alerts. The recent intensified problem of wildfire pollution in the Western United States, by contrast, was indeed a harbinger of coming climate-related disaster, and should have been seen as such. The problem, however, isn’t that the air quality disaster in New York (and much of the Eastern United States) is receiving too much attention, but that its predecessors received too little. Yes, it’s unfair that smoke-filled skies in New York, still the center of the media universe, get noticed in a way that comparable crises elsewhere don’t.

As the sky in New York City turns orange from Canada's wildfire smoke and air quality reaches unhealthy levels, Googlers have been told to work from home. Google's memo told staffers to remain indoors, "avoid vigorous physical activity," and run their air conditioners with clean filters, CNBC reported. The US government has issued air quality warnings across the Midwest and Northeast, telling people to limit time spent outdoors.

One source for such items is Outlandish, the Crown Heights, Brooklyn, outfitter that opened in January. It was co-founded by Benje Williams and Ken Bernard, who are Black, expressly to encourage people of color to reconnect with the outdoors. The shop sells the necessary gear but also organizes hikes outside of the city and hosts a book club focused on works about nature by writers of color. He and his father, who hadn’t gone backpacking in 40 years, have been on three more trips since. For the adventurous dad, Williams recommends an ultralightweight stuff sack from Allmansright, whose backpacks and bags are handmade in the Bronx, or socks from the Brooklyn-based label William Ellery, which offers wool-blend pairs in nature-inspired colors with names like Chanterelle and Lichen.

Such a suggestion is blasphemy — and potentially illegal — on Wall Street. But as AI tech continues to advance, one Wall Street executive is wondering if there isn't some wiggle room on those types of policies. But what really caught my eye was Friedman's comments around having to fully understand how the AI works. That's a fascinating thought exercise, and one worth having with how quick AI tech seems to be evolving these days. Wall Street is getting fed up with Amazon.

There were more than 400 wildfires burning in Canada on Tuesday, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, causing unhealthy smoke conditions from New York to Michigan. As of Wednesday June 7, New York City was the city with the worst air quality on Earth, according to IQAir. For New York residents, an air quality advisory was shared in multiple regions. It indicates that fine particles in the air have reached an unhealthy level, especially for sensitive groups. I wish I knew that for sure, but it all depends on what happens in Canada so people should pay attention to that."

Wildfire smoke has prompted ground stops and delays at Newark and LaGuardia airports in New York. "The FAA has taken steps to manage the flow of traffic into the New York City area due to reduced visibility from wildfire smoke," FAA spokesperson told Insider. The smoke was from huge wildfires encompassing more than 420 fires across Canada, including massive blazes in northern Quebec. Weather conditions carried the smoke hundreds of miles into the U.S., blanketing cities across the northeast from New York to Maryland in a thick haze. According to the National Weather Service, visibility was reduced to 5 miles Queens and a little as 4 miles in Newark.

A tiny New York City studio with no bathroom and $2,350-a-month rent was quickly snapped up. "If you want to be on a prime block," a student who bid on it said, "you can't have everything." But does a 77-square-foot studio apartment in New York City — which has no kitchen, a shared bathroom in the hallway, and recently rented for $2,350 after a bidding war — count? Homes like these, however, are actually relatively common in New York City. "This apartment has allowed me to live in the center of NYC, which was a priority for me.

CNN —The recovery of wreckage from a private plane that crashed Sunday in Virginia, killing all four people onboard, after its pilot became unresponsive is expected to begin Tuesday. The unresponsive aircraft prompted the deployment of six fighter jets as it flew near Washington, DC, officials said. Six F-16s were launched from three bases and raced to intercept the private plane, White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said Monday. Investigators are now examining the private plane’s autopilot function in the Virginia crash, a source familiar with the investigation said. Correction: An earlier version of this story gave the wrong source for information about the course taken by the private plane.

I did the latter and tried hidden city ticketing via Skiplagged. That's when I saw an ad for Skiplagged, which championed its hidden city ticketing hack. In my case, the trip was from Los Angeles to New York City to Buffalo. Neither of those options were how I wanted to spend my first couple of days in New York City. The new barriers, part of a test, will be at just three stations and cost $100 million. The city will start installing barriers on three platforms in the months ahead, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority told The New York Post.
