Down on chips, Toyota goes back to basics with car keys
  + stars: | 2022-10-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
TOKYO, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp has discovered that even keys can be too "smart" for their own good. "As the shortage of semiconductors continues, this is a provisional measure aimed at delivering cars to customers as quickly as possible," Toyota said in a statement, apologising for the inconvenience. "As for the second smart key, we plan to hand it over as soon as it is ready," it added. A global chips shortage has caused a severe delay in car production and shipments, with many buyers having to wait years to get theirs delivered. Toyota has been hit particularly hard this year, with natural disasters and other disruptions adding to their troubles.

SHANGHAI, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday made his chief of staff, Ding Xuexiang, one of the most powerful men in China, in a move party watchers say underscores the importance Xi puts on trust and loyalty. "Ding is effectively Xi's chief-of-staff and is almost always by his side. It is clear that Xi has trusted Ding's loyalty and ability," he said. It is possible that Ding has influenced Xi to promote more technocrats to leadership positions at the ministerial and vice-ministerial level," Thomas said. In speeches this year Ding repeatedly urged party cadres to demonstrate loyalty and unity as well as rectify problems to ensure the smooth execution of the Party Congress.
But protocols failed to match reality at the Niagara Falls plant, according to more than a dozen workers. In addition to those signature diseases, which are rare even among asbestos workers, the tiny strands can harm the body in other ways. In the 15 years that followed, congressional attempts to ban asbestos would continue to fall short. OSHA declined to make an official available for an on-the-record interview or comment on ProPublica's findings at the Niagara Falls plant. At the OxyChem plant in Wichita, union president Keith Peacock said he was comfortable with the way asbestos was handled.

SummarySummary Companies Company says component supply problems easing furtherSays customer activity at a high levelExpects to reach operating profit margin goal one year earlyZURICH, Oct 20 (Reuters) - ABB (ABBN.S) posted its highest-ever quarterly profit margin during the third quarter as the engineering and technology company said customer demand remained strong. The maker of industrial drives and electric ship motors said on Thursday its core operating profit margin increased by 1.5 percentage points to 16.6%, the highest since the Swiss company was founded in 1988. The profit margin improvement brought the year to date figure to 15.5%, and meant ABB is likely to achieve its target of hitting 15% this year - one year early. "We delivered high order growth, a strong top-line development and a historically high margin," Chief Executive Bjorn Rosengren said in a statement. Rosengren's strategy has led to selling non-core businesses, like the mechanical power transmission business Dodge, and also spinning off its turbocharging business Accelleron to shareholders.
The EV battery space will need to fill 10 million jobs globally by 2030. Firms like Redwood Materials, QuantumScape, and more, are searching for hundreds of workers. Battery companies are desperate for talent to meet the demand they're seeing from electric vehicle automakers — and some are paying big bucks to attract workers. Battery companies are racing to get critical materials like lithium and nickel. This need means that firms innovating all aspects of the battery value chain — including battery chemistry, materials, battery health, repurposing and more — are competing with one another to fill what the World Economic Forum expects will be 10 million jobs globally by 2030.

CNN —There’s growing evidence that Black heart failure patients are less likely to get advanced therapies than White patients. A study published Wednesday in the journal Circulation: Heart Failure finds that among a group of adults with heart failure, White people were twice as likely as Black people to receive a heart transplant or a ventricular assist device, a mechanical heart pump often used for patients with end-stage heart failure. The data showed that a heart transplantation or a ventricular assist device was performed in 11% of the Black patients compared with 22% of the White patients, although death rates were similar in both: 18% in Black patients and 13% in White patients. The researchers noted that patients’ preferences for ventricular assist devices, heart transplantation or other therapies did not affect the results. These data refute the idea that disparate heart failure outcomes have to do with things like the personal preferences of the patient,” he said.

We can at least run through what we know about this market and how market cycles tend to unfold more generally. Fewer individual S & P 500 stocks made a new 52-week low than in mid-June even as the index itself undercut the June low, a modest positive glimmer. The prior extreme lows on this chart were near noteworthy market lows, if not always right at them. The Stock Trader's Almanac notes that of the 23 S & P 500 bear markets since World War II, seven ended in October. The S & P 500 has failed in four tries of since late August even to get above the short-term 20-day moving average, most recently on Friday.

Ding Xuexiang: from Shanghai party cadre to Xi gatekeeper

Alongside China's top diplomats was Ding Xuexiang, who has risen from Communist Party cadre in Shanghai to become Xi's private secretary and gatekeeper. Ding, 60, is considered a leading candidate for promotion this month to the Politburo Standing Committee, the party's seven-member ruling echelon, despite lacking experience as a provincial-level party secretary or governor. He eventually succeeded the General Office's then-head, Li Zhanshu, who is currently China's top legislator and at 72 is expected to retire from the Standing Committee. Given the opacity of Chinese politics and Ding's roll as a background player, there is even less known about him than other leading Standing Committee prospects. In speeches this year Ding repeatedly urged party cadres to demonstrate loyalty and unity as well as rectify problems to ensure the smooth execution of the Party Congress.

Flooded cars are 'rotting from the inside out'Floodwaters can destroy — sometimes slowly — electronics, lubricants and mechanical systems in vehicles. Not all titles will reflect flood damageThat's because not all flooded cars are recorded as such unless an insurance company is involved. Reselling them to consumers can get on the right side of the law if the title discloses the flood damage. So, with no insurance company involvement there may not be any official record of the flood damage.

Passengers on at least three American Airlines flights reported bizarre moaning and groaning noises from in-flight intercom systems. In a viral video, one passenger described the sound as "somewhere between an orgasm and vomiting." According to an American Airlines spokesperson, the PA systems "are hardwired and there is no external access." However, it appears this wasn't the only American Airlines flight that has been subject to strange noises. The American Airlines spokesperson told Insider the company is reviewing the additional claims, and also noted that there is no WiFi component to the PA systems, which would make an external hack difficult.
