[1/2] May 3, 2021; New York, New York, USA; Zac Jones #6 of the New York Rangers skates with a stick decorated for "Pride Night" in warm-ups prior to the game against the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden. Players were widely expected to take the ice to warm up wearing jerseys and using Pride-themed tape that honored the LGBTQ+ community as part of the NHL team's seventh annual Pride Night. Images from last year's Pride Night showed players wearing jerseys with rainbow accents and wielding hockey sticks wrapped in rainbow-color tape. "Our organization respects the LGBTQ+ community and we are proud to bring attention to important local community organizations as part of another great Pride Night," Rangers said in a statement. It marks the second time this month that a Pride Night has seemingly not gone to plan in the National Hockey League, after Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov boycotted his team's Pride Night festivities.

GIRONA, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Pedri celebrated his 100th match for Barcelona as he came off the bench and scored from close range in the second-half to give the LaLiga leaders a hard-fought 1-0 win at Girona on Saturday. With forwards Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres suspended and midfielder Pedri recovering from muscle discomfort, Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez opted to rotate his side on a chilly afternoon at Montilivi. Despite having almost 70% of possession in the first half, Barcelona struggled to break the deadlock against Girona’s low block. Barcelona finished the match with only three shots on target, having made the most of their only clear opportunity. "I believe that in these games you have to win it in any way possible," Barcelona defender Jules Kounde told DAZN.
A lieutenant colonel in Ukraine's intelligence service was charged with being a Russian spy. Security services said they found stacks of cash and Russian SIM cards in his home. Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) said it detained a lieutenant colonel from its own agency, and discovered stacks of foreign cash and SIM cards issued by Russian carriers when searching his home. "Ukraine made a major mistake in not following the lead of the Baltic nations following independence in reforming the security services from ground zero," he said, per The Guardian.

Diageo fortunes rest on reviving America’s thirst

LONDON, Jan 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Investors in Diageo (DGE.L) are suffering from fading animal spirits. The share price of the $97 billion drinks company, which makes Guinness and Baileys, slumped 6% on Thursday, even though its 9% net sales growth beat analysts’ expectations of 8%. It’s possible that drinkers are getting more cautious, fearing a possible recession, and tempering their purchases of pricier booze. Sales in North America grew by just 3% year-on-year in the most recent six-month spell, compared with 14% a year earlier. But if the dry spell continues, Diageo shareholders may be nursing a more lasting headache.

Are jerks more likely to get ahead at work?
  + stars: | 2023-01-23 | by ( Aki Ito | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +10 min
Even worse, all the cutthroat role models we're surrounded by at work make us hesitant about being nice ourselves. In the social sciences, the technical term for jerks — those who are combative, selfish, and manipulative — is "disagreeable." Call this the jerk way. All in all, being a jerk doesn't help you get ahead — but it also doesn't hurt. Sutton's no-asshole rule has become widely adopted, and businesses like Atlassian have overhauled their performance reviews in part to ensure that "brilliant jerks" can't get ahead.
To help with the process, here are five stocks chosen by Wall Street's top analysts, according to TipRanks, a platform that ranks analysts based on their past performances. Nonetheless, Monness Crespi Hardt analyst Brian White expects the results to be in line with, or marginally above, Street expectations. Looking ahead, White sees pent-up demand for iPhones come into play in the forthcoming quarters, once Apple overcomes the production snags. (See Spotify Stock Chart on TipRanks) White is particularly upbeat about the waning mobile app store monopolies, after the European Union passed the Digital Markets Act last year. The analyst is also placed 431st among more than 8,000 analysts on TipRanks.
American pluralism is a glorious thing. Dedication to shared ideals and the commitment to living peacefully among compatriots of all colors and creeds can bring out the best in us. It unites people of all religions, national origins and other historical sources of division in defending our aspirations to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Yet that pluralism is in peril today, compelling me, an American Orthodox Jew, to defend Ivan Provorov , a Russian Orthodox Christian and professional hockey player. Mr. Provorov, a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers, has come under fire for refusing to wear a “Pride Night” jersey bearing the rainbow flag or use a rainbow-taped hockey stick during warm-ups before the team’s game on Tuesday.
REUTERS/Leonardo Fernandez ViloriaCARACAS, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebel group said on Saturday they will resume peace talks in Mexico next month, overcoming a recent impasse after the government recently declared and then called off a bilateral ceasefire. There was a first cycle of talks last year in Caracas to end the guerrillas' part in nearly six decades of war. The about-face on the ceasefire came after ELN said it had not agreed to it. "In said cycle, the issue of society's participation in peace building will be addressed. Colombia and the ELN said they would jointly examine progress in implementing agreements reached during the first cycle of talks and agreed to keep communication channels open even when not at the negotiating table.
Richard Masters and Vladislav Osipov were charged by the Department of Justice for sanctions evasion. The US has accused the pair of trying to conceal a sanctioned oligarch's ownership of a superyacht. Masters, 52, used a fake name for Viktor Vekselberg's "Tango," calling it the "Fanta," per DoJ. Prosecutors said Vladislav Osipov and Richard Masters had facilitated the operation of Vekselberg's $90 million yacht that was seized by Spanish authorities last April. Osipov designed a "complicated ownership structure of shell companies" to mask Vekselberg's ownership of the boat, called "Tango," according to the DoJ.
Months later, when TikTok was grilled by Congress over privacy and security concerns, Pappas was the TikTok executive in the hot seat fielding questions. But Chew, who took over as TikTok CEO in April 2021, has largely stayed out of the spotlight at a time when the app he leads can’t seem to avoid it. He eventually went on to become the CFO of Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, which he helped take public in 2018. While Chew is not a Chinese national, Quint noted Chinese tech companies and leaders that have drawn too much attention to themselves have faced tough government crackdowns. Ultimately, Quint said, “I don’t think the CEO of TikTok has much relevance at all” for US lawmakers scrutinizing its ties to China.

Interest in Teslas on car-shopping website Edmunds surged after last week's price cuts. Tesla's price cuts also come at a time when shoppers are still struggling to find good deals on new vehicles, making discounts like Tesla's all the more appealing, Caldwell wrote. No longer priced as luxury vehicles, Tesla's cars will now compete with EVs marketed to mainstream buyers. The price cuts also allow Tesla's vehicles to qualify for an additional $7,500 tax credit on new EVs as part of the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act, another draw for shoppers. "Price cuts of 20% or more, with incentives, nationwide don't come around often, so acting now is in your best interest before any corrections in the opposite direction."
Murray grinds down Kokkinakis in late-night epic

Murray, back with coach Ivan Lendl who guided him to his Grand Slam titles and to world number one in 2016, has not gone past the third round of a Grand Slam since 2017 when his hip condition first surfaced. Kokkinakis tightened with the finishing line in sight and the venom gradually went out of his shots as Murray threw caution to the wind and locked on to his target. Relentlessly Murray ground his way back into the contest to set up a deciding fifth set, sealing the fourth set with a second-serve ace. There was pandemonium when he saved four break points at 3-3 and Kokkinakis was within two points of victory when Murray served at 4-5 in the decider. "Thanks for staying, but now I think we should all get off to bed," Murray said.
Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov refused to participate in pregame warmups Tuesday, ahead of his team's Pride Night celebration, citing religious objections. While Flyers coach John Tortorella called the hockey team's Pride Night event "a great night," he also defended Provorov's refusal to participate. "With Provy, he's being true to himself and to his religion," Tortorella said, using Provorov's nickname. “The Philadelphia Flyers organization is committed to inclusivity and is proud to support the LGBTQ+ community,” the team said in a statement after the game. “Many of our players are active in their support of local LGBTQ+ organizations, and we were proud to host our annual Pride Night again this year.
Jan 18 (Reuters) - The National Hockey League (NHL) said on Wednesday that players are free to decide which initiatives to support after Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov's boycott of the team's Pride Night festivities. The NHL, whose annual "Hockey is for Everyone" campaign each February focuses on ways to promote diversity and inclusion, said Provorov was within his rights to sit out the warmup. "Clubs decide whom to celebrate, when and how — with league counsel and support," the NHL said in a statement. "Players are free to decide which initiatives to support, and we continue to encourage their voices and perspectives on social and cultural issues." The group also said it was disappointed the focus following the Flyers' Pride Night is on Provorov rather than an arena that was otherwise full of support for the LGBTQ+ community.
