It's called working a "hushed hybrid" schedule, and unlike other forms of sneakily evading a return to the office, you actually want — no, need — your boss to know about this one to make it work. Hushed hybrid refers to employees working from home more often than companywide policies would otherwise permit them to, thanks to the flexibility of their managers. AdvertisementWhile some workers could benefit from working "hushed hybrid," uneven enforcement of work policies could raise questions of favoritism. That could help eliminate the need for "hushed hybrid" working. Depending on how companies track attendance at the office, some managers may not be able to cover up for their employees' remote work.

1 way to save money on your wedding is to cut the guest count," Shane McMurray, CEO and co-founder of The Wedding Report, recently told CNBC. "What we saw was that the pandemic gave people permission to have a tiny wedding," Miller said. In 2023, the average guest list was 134, The Wedding Report found. Here are ways experts suggest reducing your wedding guest list without cutting ties with family and friends in the process:1. Choosing a more intimate venue with a smaller capacity can help you maintain a solid guest list limit, experts say.

And workers themselves welcome the new culture of flexibility that offers them a better work-life balance. AdvertisementThere is no doubt that the transition is underway, Ravin Jesuthasan, a renowned future-of-work expert and author of "The Skills-Powered Organization," told Business Insider. However, some organizations exhibit a certain amount of inertia when it comes to adapting to the new working culture. There's lots of people who want to come work here, and so this is our culture and this is how we're going to sustain our culture," Jesuthasan said. The most important thing is that people have to understand the logic of why you create these rules," the future-of-work expert said.

To the Editor:Re “Liberal ‘White Dudes’ Are Rallying for Harris” (news article, July 31):Wait, are we really allowed to smile? But now, with the weight of President Biden’s candidacy off our shoulders, we are almost giddy. No longer merely responding to Donald Trump’s taunts, but letting go with a zinger or two of our own. No longer just wringing our hands and holding our heads, but throwing punches and taking selfies. But it does feel awfully nice to be, dare I say it, almost happy with the way things are going.

Read previewChinese scientists claim that it's possible to destroy satellites — including SpaceX's Starlink system — using lasers mounted on submarines. Chinese researchers envision the solution as flotillas of mass-produced laser subs that could be dispatched to oceans around the world. They would wait for tracking data from other non-submarine platforms to determine when a target satellite is overhead. In addition to destroying satellites, these subs could also blast aircraft or land targets such as radars and oil refineries. Laser subs could also shield China's ballistic missile submarines from detection.

Sweaty startups are blue-collar businesses, often in unglamorous or laborious fields like septic services, car washes, or lawn care. It's what your grandparents would've just called a small business, but it was a tongue-in-cheek answer to the Silicon Valley-style entrepreneurship being glorified in culture at that time. Still, some small businesses look to private equity to scale their businesses in different markets, even if that means overhauling operations in some cases. "Small businesses partner with private-equity firms because they provide access to capital and organizational support to help companies grow," Drew Maloney, the council's president and CEO, told BI. The Palisades Nuclear Generating Station in Covert, Mich. John Madill | The Herald-Palladium | APThe Palisades Power Plant on the shores of Lake Michigan had become a piece of history, a relic of an era when nuclear energy was viewed as the future. The new technology, which could become the first of its kind on the U.S. grid, promises to speed deployment of nuclear plants in the future. The U.S. and a coalition of more than 20 other countries pledged in December to triple nuclear energy by 2050. But building new nuclear plants is slow and expensive. SMRs are viewed as an important path to expand nuclear power because they promise to reduce capital costs, a major hurdle to building new plants.

Jan is the first person in Australia to be convicted of forced marriage since it was criminalized in 2013. Sakina Muhammad Jan was the first person convicted under Australia's forced marriage laws. Some of the measures borrow from forced-marriage laws in Britain, where hundreds of people take out protection orders each year to thwart an impending forced marriage. Other countries such as France, Canada and Germany also have specific laws against forced marriage. A month before Jan’s sentencing, the immigration minister circulated a directive specifically naming the crime of forced marriage as serious enough to warrant the removal of a visa.

“That was a sign to ‘Murdoch watchers’ that something was up,” said Jim Rutenberg, a New York Times reporter who broke the news about Mr. Murdoch’s engagement. Mr. Rutenberg, who writes about politics and culture, has long reported on the Murdoch family. In 2019, he and Jonathan Mahler wrote an exhaustive article for The Times Magazine about the Murdochs’ sprawling media empire and its global influence. “That, for better or worse, sort of cemented us as the experts on this family,” said Mr. Mahler, who covers various topics for the magazine, including politics and entertainment. The outcome will determine who will have control of the empire after Mr. Murdoch’s death.

Consumers who try to buy popular weight loss drugs online without a prescription risk being scammed or receiving unsafe products, a new study shows. Shortages of the popular weight loss medication, which belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1s, have led to “a black market of illegal knockoffs,” said Dr. Christopher McGowan, the founder, medical director and research director of True You Weight Loss, a weight loss clinic in Cary, North Carolina. Medicare doesn’t cover the drugs when prescribed for weight loss, and many state Medicaid plans heavily restrict coverage. Online scamsSome websites purporting to be online pharmacies take consumers’ money but never deliver the medications, according to the study. Consumers won’t get that sort of care if they buy drugs online without seeing a health care provider.

NASA this week has been discussing the possibility of returning Starliner empty and instead using SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft to return its astronauts. The Boeing crew flight was initially planned to last a minimum of nine days. NASA previously noted that SpaceX serves as a backup but has sought to deemphasize that possibility, calling Boeing’s spacecraft the “primary option” for return. Already, Boeing’s Starliner losses total more than $1.5 billion due to repeated setbacks and years of delays in developing the spacecraft. If NASA backs Boeing and returns Wilmore and Williams on Starliner, the agency is accepting a currently unquantifiable amount of risk.

But you're going to struggle if you're looking for a new one. "Even a few months ago, the labor market seemed fine, the trajectory looked stable," said Guy Berger, director of economic research at the Burning Glass Institute, a think tank. The Fed therefore believes it can put a floor underneath the labor market that prevents it from deteriorating further, Berger said. "What we need to see is strong private-sector labor market growth, and outside of health care, what we've seen instead is a very, very rapid deceleration that has shown no signs yet of stabilizing," Pollak said. Fed Will Scour Jobs Report for Signs of Weakness

Federal Reserve officials held off on cutting interest rates this week because they want slightly more data to feel confident that inflation is truly coming under control. But while that approach is cautious when it comes to price increases, it could prove to be risky when it comes to the labor market. High Fed interest rates help to cool inflation by slowing demand in the economy. And as inflation comes down, Fed policymakers are increasingly attuned to the risk that they might overdo it, tipping the economy into a severe enough slowdown that it pushes unemployment higher and leaves Americans out of work. Those concerns were not enough to prod central bankers to cut interest rates at their meeting this week.
