An outage that crippled businesses around the world turned many Microsoft computers into bricks overnight. That means a lot of people are seeing the blue screen of death as computers continually try to reboot. The issues stemmed from a faulty software update delivered to Microsoft devices and servers from CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company that mainly works to help protect bigger companies from attacks. On Friday, CrowdStrike said it had issued a software update fix that should repair the computers, and it posted instructions for manually fixing the problem. That means the fix that CrowdStrike sent may not be able to repair your systems from afar.

Since the Ridge had “contactless check-in,” we had received two codes to get in the front entrance and our room. So we spent the night in the hotel’s breakfast room, where the restroom also required a code that we did not have. The next morning, the hotel staff sent an apologetic message with the right code, and promised us a refund for that night, about $215. Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country.
