Prosecutors are investigating whether Amazon deceived lenders about its injury rates. The citations were the latest in a string of fines leveled against Amazon for putting workers at risk of such injuries. In his first letter to shareholders last April, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy cited misleading statistics to claim that Amazon's injury rate is "sometimes misunderstood." The investigation is taking place as regulators and media have increased their scrutiny of injuries in Amazon warehouses. Workers at Amazon warehouses are four times as likely to suffer such injuries as workers in non-Amazon warehouses, a review of Washington state workers' compensation data showed.

And that's the way I felt when I was working in corporate, is that the DEI initiatives were not for me. According to Clarke, these are the things companies got wrong in 2022, and ways to fix them in 2023:Not providing the support — or budget — for DEI plans to thrive. There's all these layoffs and leaders have to make budget decisions, and DEI got deprioritized," Clarke says. If companies don't prioritize DEI efforts by providing actual support, Clarke believes things won't change. How many companies have hired a Chief Diversity Officer and then didn't give them a budget or a robust team?

New York CNN —The World Economic Forum’s annual meeting at Davos has long been a lightning rod for conspiracy theories. In the past, however, these farcical conspiracy theories have largely been confined to the fringe corners of the internet — places like Infowars. The radical ideas promoted by the likes of Jones have gone mainstream, having been popularized by some of the most influential personalities in right-wing media. The Associated Press’ Sophia Tulp reported this week that use of “The Great Reset” has been on a steady rise at Fox News. The danger of conspiracy theories has not been lost on attendees at Davos.

"FANG" and other big cap tech have faded as favorite trades, but i nvesting in foreign stocks as a way to generate better returns is just beginning. The outperformance in foreign markets has not gone unnoticed by U.S. investors, bruised by the 19.4% decline in the S & P 500 last year. Also, investors in foreign stocks will benefit if their local currencies gain against the dollar. Investors are now monitoring foreign markets much more and focusing on what's happening in currency pairs, like dollar/yen. "I think a lot of investors will play Europe stocks right out of the gate," he said.

The reinsurance industry has been caught up in storm after storm in recent years. This year, it may get an umbrella. Last year, weather-related events including Florida’s Hurricane Ian caused claims of about $120 billion for insurers, making it the third-costliest year for weather catastrophes, according to Fitch Ratings estimates. But the silver lining for the reinsurers that backstop a lot of catastrophe risk for other insurers is that—finally—their rates and terms may be able to significantly adjust to better reflect the elevated frequency and severity of losses in a changing climate.

The project, known internally by its codename, "Valkyrie," was the typical science-fiction-sounding idea that Google's self-described "moonshot factory" was designed to dream up. But amid a lack of successful launches and a tech industry facing economic headwinds, insiders say the lab is now hitting the hard-reset button and rethinking its purpose within Alphabet, Google's parent company. X swapped standard corporate titles like "Communications Lead" and "Manager" for grander and more-nebulous names like "Factory Whisperer" and "Firestarter." Its internet-balloon unit, Google Loon, meant to bring people in rural areas online, was shuttered in January 2021. "I think the infusion of VC people is a good thing," one former senior X employee said.

For one thing, social media looks different than it did two years ago. Trump now has his own social media company, Truth Social, and his account has been restored on Twitter (where he has yet to tweet). And though there’s no legal right for Trump or anyone else to be on social media, Republicans in Florida and Texas are trying to create laws that would prevent social media companies from removing certain posts. NBC News asked a handful of experts in social media moderation what they thought about the upcoming decision. The answers offered a sense of the shifts in social media and moderation since both Twitter and Facebook banned Trump.

That’s when the United Nations’ first water confab in almost five decades starts in New York. Achieving that globally requires spending $1 trillion a year on the sustainable provision of drinking water and sanitation, and preparing for floods, scarcity and pollution, per the World Resources Institute. And 90% of climate change’s effects manifest through water, as recent floods and scarcity demonstrate. Knowing when to turn off the funding tap is important, too, just as many banks won’t back Arctic drilling or new coal mines. With some financial groups distancing themselves from umbrella climate change bodies, it’s a challenging time to make this case.
