New York Philharmonic Chief Abruptly Steps Down
  + stars: | 2024-07-11 | by ( Javier C. Hernández | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Gary Ginstling, the New York Philharmonic’s president and chief executive, abruptly resigned on Thursday after just a year on the job, leaving the orchestra in limbo as it grapples with challenges including an investigation into its workplace culture after two players were accused of misconduct. His departure comes as the orchestra’s musicians and the administration are in the midst of heated talks over a new labor contract; the current agreement expires in September. The musicians have been seeking large wage increases. As the orchestra prepares for its 2024-25 season, it is facing another leadership void: It will not have a music director. Jaap van Zweden’s six-year tenure comes to an end this summer, and his successor, the star conductor Gustavo Dudamel, does not start in the role until 2026.

Supply and DemandThe case for housing deregulation starts with Econ 101: Allowing builders to significantly increase housing supply leads to much lower prices. It isn’t rising demand, as the U.S. population rose even faster back when housing prices were roughly stable. Standard of LivingWhat would happen if homebuilders could once again freely build until housing prices were driven back down to cost? The admittedly small number of studies on the link between YIMBY and babies support common sense: Less regulation lowers housing prices, and lower housing prices generally raise birth rates and hasten child-bearing. In a rational world, the panacea policy of housing deregulation would be a done deal.

US President Joe Biden walks to the White House in Washington, DC, on July 7, 2024, after attending campaign events in Pennsylvania. President Joe Biden is set to face reporters at a potentially make-or-break solo press conference on Thursday, a day after the first Democratic senator joined growing calls for Biden to drop out of the 2024 election contest, citing his "disastrous debate" two weeks ago against Donald Trump. "For the good of the country, I'm calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race," Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont wrote Wednesday in an op-ed in The Washington Post. We cannot unsee President Biden's disastrous debate performance. In addition to Welch, 11 Democrats in the House of Representatives have publicly said Biden should abandon his campaign and allow another Democrat to become the party's nominee for November's election.

A brutal 24 hoursPresident Biden and his allies may have thought they had stemmed a rebellion by fellow Democrats and donors after his debate debacle. Some Democratic lawmakers made clear that they weren’t falling into line behind Biden. She said she would back whatever decision he takes, but the equivocal comments were seen as offering other Democrats space to speak up. Hours later, Peter Welch of Vermont became the first Democratic senator to call on Biden to withdraw. “We can’t unsee what we saw” at the debate, Welch told The Times, adding that Donald Trump’s returning to power would be a “catastrophe.”

Mr. Welch said it had become an existential issue for him to consider the threat of another Trump presidency, and that his determination was that Mr. Biden was not up to beating the former president. “It’s not the elites in Vermont who are talking to me,” Mr. Welch said, brushing back an argument that Mr. Biden has made in recent days as he has defiantly refused to leave the race. “It’s the working-class mother who’s got two kids and is hoping maybe we can get the child care tax back. “One of the achievements of Joe Biden is that he has unified the Democratic Party — everyone from Bernie Sanders to Joe Manchin,” Mr. Welch said. “And what that means is that if we have to go through ‘Who’s our next candidate?,’ it’s going to be among people who are all committed to the Biden commitment to save democracy, the Biden commitment to the environment, the Biden commitment to women’s rights.”

He was the favorite of the Democratic Party elite. As he faces perhaps the most perilous moment of his political career, Mr. Biden has switched from defense to offense, taking a page out of his predecessor’s playbook to try to quash an internal uprising over his age and capacity. Rather than just try to show that he is up to the job, Mr. Biden has opted to push back against those who say he is not. “He has to show he’s a fighter; that’s critical,” said Cornell Belcher, a Democratic pollster who worked on Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns. “They see him as weak, not strong, which is connected to being too old,” Mr. Belcher said, referring to voters.

Donors often operate behind the scenes and, according to sources, have grown increasingly anxious about Biden’s candidacy following his halting debate performance last month. CNN reached out to the Biden campaign for comment. In the immediate wake of Biden’s debate performance, organizers paused conversations on planning the fundraiser until after the July 4 holiday to allow the dust to settle. A spokesperson for the Biden campaign told CNN the event was not affiliated with their official fundraising schedule. Donors elsewhere in the country have told CNN their events are on hold until Biden’s path is clearer.

CNN —A staggering 24 hours that cracked the political foundation of Joe Biden’s reelection bid leave him facing the most high-pressure presidential news conference in modern history on Thursday. The stakes for Biden’s solo appearance at the conclusion of the NATO summit multiplied by the hour as his political position unraveled at a dignity-sapping rate. In another danger sign for Biden’s candidacy, one Democratic strategist told CNN, “Everything is frozen because no one knows what’s going to happen. The deepening crisis gripping the Democratic Party is not simply damaging Biden’s chances of clinging to the nomination. But as Biden’s political standing continues to rapidly deteriorate, the question is becoming how much longer he can insist he’s the only Democrat who can beat Trump.

On a Tuesday afternoon in early June, Robínson invited seven friends to a lunch celebrating both their 13th year living in the New York area and the launch of their 13th collection from their jewelry line, Isshī. “This is my 13 going on 13 event,” Robínson said with a laugh. The venue was the Chinatown showroom of the lighting design company Blue Green Works, co-founded by Robínson’s friend Peter B. Each place setting had a banana-leaf mat, and hanging over the table was a flared green glass pendant lamp that called to mind a palm tree; together, the details made the space feel like a jungle oasis. It was a fitting place to see Isshī’s resort 2025 collection, in whose press materials Robínson likened the experience of heartbreak to a plane crashing into the rainforest: Modular leather-cord necklaces, crystal-embellished bracelets and hand-felted lamb’s-wool corsages all resembled carnivorous plants.
