A mega-yacht seized by U.S. authorities from a Russian oligarch is costing the government nearly $1 million a month to maintain, according to new court filings. The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking permission to sell a 348-foot yacht called Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The government said it wants to sell the $230 million yacht due to the "excessive costs" of maintenance and crew, which it said could total $922,000 a month. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week that the European Union should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's war effort. Yet, nearly two years later, the legal process for proving ownership of the Russian assets and selling them has proven to be far more time-consuming and costly.

He said generative AI is democratizing "very esoteric techniques and attacks," for adversaries who don't have the same sophistication or skill level. "What we talked about in the earnings call is the ability to create more adversaries with lower skill levels, but operating at a much higher skill level, leveraging generative AI," Kurtz said, "Of course, on the security side, we leverage generative AI to help protect our customers, so it's going to be the battle of AI in the future." CrowdStrike aims to create a single, more simple platform that can stop breaches and "add capabilities seamlessly," he said. He mentioned a seven-figure deal CrowdStrike made during its more recent quarter with a mega cruise line. "People may try to buy something, they may think it's cheaper, it's not: free is not free," he said.

Nvidia's 76% gain this year underscores the concentrated stock market led by mega-cap tech. Despite concerns, the growth of AI stocks isn't a hype cycle, according to Defiance ETFs' CEO. The Defiance Quantum ETF holds leading AI players, spanning sectors like quantum and cloud computing. It's a concentrated stock market, with a handful of mega-cap technology names continuing to lead the gains as they profit off the development of AI. Despite the odds, active managers turned in a better-than-expected performance in 2023, according to a report out today by S & P Global. The bad news: the long-term performance of active managers remained dismal. The majority (60%) of large-cap fund managers underperformed the S & P 500 in 2023, according to S & P Global. While that may not seem like an impressive performance, it is slightly better than the historic average of 64% that underperform the S & P 500. Surprising, because 2023 was a tough year for active managers.

In the influencer world, Black female creators see their work co-opted without credit or apology. Kylie Jarrett, Ph.D., a scholar of media studies, refers to women content creators as "digital housewives," which is fitting because they often earn the same salary as stay-at-home moms: $0. Some of the most exploited people of all are Black women and girls who create content, then watch it get appropriated and monetized by others. They were eventually invited on the show via Zoom — but only after, you guessed it, social media outcry . The experience is so common among Black creators that in the summer of 2021, they went on strike to protest the practice of appropriating their work .

Edwin Tong, Singapore's culture minister, told local outlet Mothership on February 28 that the amount of grant given "is not what is being speculated online." As Tong, the Singapore culture minister, told Mothership, the city-state is looking "beyond just the economic impact" of Swiftonimics. Economists estimate that Swift's concerts in Singapore could contribute up to 500 million Singapore dollars, or $372 million, in tourist receipts. AdvertisementIt's a different story for spending on experiences — and it's heightened because Singapore is Swift's only stop in Southeast Asia. Mann said the people who have money to pay for flight tickets, Swift's concert tickets, and a hotel are likely to keep spending at other tourist spots.

With Apple reportedly out of the electric car game and Tesla losing market share in some Chinese cities, the best EV stock plays are arguably now all based in China. Li Auto 's market share waned, and Morgan Stanley analysts are watching whether there will be a boost from new models. "Following our upgrade earlier this month, Li Auto delivered impressive earnings/guidance, further cementing its position as a top-tier China OEM," Deutsche Bank analysts said in a late February report. Li Auto management said they expect gross margin to fluctuate between 10% and 25%, but generally remain above 20%. But even with its premium pricing the company isn't immune from intense competition in China's electric car market.

Gangs attacked two prisons in Haiti, including the country’s largest penitentiary, and allowed prisoners to escape on Saturday night, according to Haitian officials, the latest instance of escalating violence and disorder in the country’s capital, which has been ravaged by gang violence for more than two years. While details of the attack remained murky, the government of Haiti released a statement Sunday saying that police officers were unable to prevent gang members from releasing “a large number of prisoners,” adding that several inmates and prison staff were injured. Haiti’s national penitentiary held nearly 4,000 inmates at the time of the attack and the other facility, the Croix-des-Bouquets Civil Prison, held roughly 1,400, according to local human rights groups. At least two of the country’s police unions went on social media on Saturday requesting that all police officers report to the national prison in Port-au-Prince, the capital, to help control the situation and prevent the inmates from fleeing.

The sheer persistence of the equity rally, with the S & P 500 up 16 of 18 weeks and refusing to succumb to supposed late-February seasonal weakness, has converted the cautious. Still, by some lights, stocks' valuation is one of the better sentiment indicators, and by that measure the investment community is pretty enthusiastic. More simply, we continue to see elevated but not alarming P/Es in the S & P 500 broadly while the median P/E of the top 10 names in the index remains close to past peaks." Coming at a time when the S & P 500 is more than 13% above its 200-day moving average — pretty stretched — and we haven't had even a 3% pullback since October. The "right" cyclical sectors are leading (industrials and consumer discretionary in addition to tech), and the equal-weight S & P 500 is nosing toward its old high.

With Mexico’s presidential election just three months away, one thing is clear: The candidate for the governing party appears to be running away with it. Claudia Sheinbaum, a physicist and protégée of the current president, holds a commanding lead of about 30 percentage points in the polls over the opposition’s Xóchitl Gálvez, a tech entrepreneur, as campaigning officially starts on Friday. Playing it safe at a time when the departing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, remains broadly popular, Ms. Sheinbaum has kept so closely to his policies and persona that she not only vows to adopt his priorities, she also sometimes imitates his slow-paced way of talking in appearances across the country. But while Ms. Sheinbaum’s exceptionally disciplined campaign has cemented her front-runner status, the candidate who could be Mexico’s first female president remains something of an enigma to many Mexicans.

Citi has identified European stocks it says are similar to the high-flying " Magnificent Seven " U.S. technology stocks, but trade at cheaper valuations leaving more room for them to rise. Citi's resulting Super Seven picks are Novo Nordisk , ASML , LVMH , SAP , Schneider Electric , Richemont and Ferrari . All of the stocks stocks also trade in the United States. Despite the rally over the past year, Citi points out that as a group, the Super Seven have lagged the Magnificent Seven, with 70% less appreciation since early 2023, leaving more upside potential.
