The 13 companies identified below have created tangible competitive advantages by investing in AI infrastructure in the early stages or finding a mission-critical niche within the AI value chain. Investing in the AI value chainIt's still early innings for the AI revolution. Next is the cloud services providers, which store data and train AI models in data centers, followed by the AI foundation models that power ChatGPT. Finally, software infrastructure players assist in integrating AI models into the AI application, or end product that consumers use. These players hold considerable market share across multiple layers of the AI value chain, resulting in higher returns as they use AI in multiple business areas.

For people with non-standard speech, it can happen in nearly every interaction with this kind of technology — Israeli company Voiceitt aims to change that. By using personalized voice models, its AI-powered speech recognition system helps people with speech impairments, caused by conditions like cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s, Down Syndrome or stroke, communicate more effectively with both people and digital devices. For Voiceitt co-founder Sara Smolley, facilitating speech recognition for non-standard speech patterns is a personal mission. “By the time I was born, she had lost most of her motor capabilities, and her speech was impacted.”Voiceitt was launched as an app in 2021 and operated as a simple vocal translator, converting non-standard speech to audio. Voiceitt has developed integrations with WebEx and ChatGPT, along with a Google Chrome extension, which convert non-standard speech to captions shown on the screen.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesJapan has ramped up its push for companies to adopt a four-day workweek, but those efforts face steep challenges in a country famous for its workaholic culture. The Japanese government recently initiated a "work style reform" campaign aimed at promoting flexible work arrangements, shorter hours and overtime limits. The move marks a more concerted effort after the government first floated support for a shorter workweek in 2021 when lawmakers endorsed the idea. "Being part of a company is almost part of a community, and this results often in longer work hours, not as efficient work hours," he told CNBC. I think that it's going to take time [for the four-day workweek] to penetrate… we're not used to being flexible.

The CBOE Volatility Index , or VIX, fell below 16 on Monday and is now flirting with its lowest level since the July doldrums. "Our historical study of volatility shows that the VIX averaged 22 points in October, 4 points above the current VIX level. We believe the low implied volatility, upcoming October earnings season and elections provide an attractive opportunity for investors to hedge a potential rise in volatility," the note said. The options would have a strike price of 18 and expire in November, serving as a bet that expectations of volatility will rise as the election nears. There are no additional losses on the trade if the VIX actually declines instead.

“The (US intelligence community) considers AI a malign influence accelerant, not yet a revolutionary influence tool,” an ODNI official told reporters. Iran, for example, has used AI to generate content in Spanish about immigration, which Tehran perceives as a divisive US political issue, the ODNI official said. Russia has generated the most AI content related to the US election of any foreign power, according to the ODNI official. Foreign operatives have also embraced plenty of old-school influence techniques this election cycle, such as staging videos rather than generating them with AI. This isn’t the first general US election where foreign powers have considered deploying AI capabilities.

Read previewApple Intelligence didn't come with the latest iPhone 16 drop on September 20, but that won't matter — analysts are confident that it'll still boost iPhone 16 sales throughout the next 12 months as Apple releases the AI-powered features in multiple software updates. "Apple Intelligence is still the big driver," Gil Luria, an Apple analyst for D.A. The analyst compared Apple Intelligence's sales boost potential to the excitement around 5G coverage for iPhone 12 about four years ago. According to the analyst, the difference now is that Apple Intelligence won't come out of the box. Luria, the Apple analyst, told BI that Apple Intelligence won't be a popular feature until people can start using it, comparing it to AI's dominance after ChatGPT was released to the public in 2022.

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. Recent reports have shown only around 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, a figure that’s even lower in the US, around 5 to 6%. Recycling has not kept pace with plastic production, which has doubled over the past 20 years.

Investors have turned bearish on oil amid fears of an OPEC+ price war and weak China oil demand. But if world GDP grows 3.3% next year, energy demand will likely surge, Bank of America says. That's because if GDP grows according to estimates, energy demand growth will likely follow. AdvertisementOPEC+ plans to add crude oil barrels into an existing surplus oil market after a series of cuts in the last two years. Those factors, along with the chance for a global economic slowdown, pose downside risks to the analysts' oil price target.

In the flood of election polls you’ll see over the next few weeks, most polling groups will include responses from “likely voters.” And often from nobody else. In theory, these poll numbers should yield more accurate results, since the people who actually vote are the ones who dictate the outcome on Election Day. After all, how exactly can a pollster know who is “likely” to vote, and who therefore will be the focus of their results? The choices they make are important, because the results of likely-voter polls can differ from those that sample a wider population, such as everyone who is registered to vote. In a close race like this year’s presidential contest, one candidate might lead in a poll among likely voters, while another might lead in the same poll’s tally of registered voters.

It may be time to take another look at municipal bonds. These days, munis are cheap relative to corporate bonds, Bank of America said in a note Friday. "Muni weakness is not the driver here, but rather corporate richness," municipal research strategist Yingchen Li wrote. "We continue to advise investors to take positions while the muni market rally remains slow and ratios are somewhat cheap," he said. Municipal bonds have already had an "impressive" run in recent months, Haskell wrote in a note last week.

The Bank of Japan left interest rates unchanged last week and indicated it was not in a hurry to hike them again. That decision, coming just days after the Fed's 50 basis points rate cut, put a pause to the yen's sharp gains this month. With Japan closed for Autumnal Equinox Day, the main driver of trade was expectations around further Fed rate cuts and the gains those have spurred in equities, commodity currencies and other risk assets. The Fed's rate cut "appears to have calmed market fears of a U.S. recession", Goldman Sachs said in a note. Meanwhile, the majority of economists polled by Reuters anticipate two more 25 bps rate cuts at the Fed's final two meetings this year.

Nebraska Republicans dominate the state's politics, including its officially non-partisan, one-house legislature. The Nebraska Examiner reported that without McDonnell, Republicans have "no path" unless a Democrat or nonpartisan lawmaker changes their mind. Nebraska and Maine are the only states that award some of their Electoral College votes by congressional district. In 2020, President Joe Biden carried the Omaha-area 2nd District and its one Electoral College vote.
