NCRI identified 951 accounts that engaged in “coordinated inauthentic activity” associated with a pro-Harris campaign called #BlueCrew. Researchers have repeatedly documented how propagandists have used automated accounts, or bots, to spread false narratives on social media. NBC NewsNot all accounts that engage in coordinated inauthentic behavior are bots. “These highly inauthentic accounts do more than spread misinformation; they establish a self-reinforcing cycle,” the NCRI report says. “This means that a relatively small subset of orchestrated, inauthentic accounts is responsible for a disproportionately large share of the misleading information being circulated.

One other potential scenario looms this fall: the "contingent election" of the president and the vice president that would happen if no one can secure the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election. That has not happened in the modern era, but there are a few conceivable (if unlikely) paths across the Electoral College map that could lead to former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris ending the race tied at 269 electoral votes. In the event of a tie, Congress would decide the next president. “Each state, regardless of population, casts a single vote for President in a contingent election,” according to the Congressional Research Service. Although Washington, D.C., has three electoral votes in the presidential election, it would not have a vote in the House in a contingent election because it is not a state.

Expect a “noisy” jobs report Friday that will be heavily affected by storms and a labor strike, economists say. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is forecast to report that the U.S. economy gained 110,000 jobs in October, with the unemployment rate unchanged at 4.1%. “Unfortunately, it won’t be easy to interpret the October jobs report,” Chris Waller, a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors, said earlier this month. At 4.1%, the unemployment rate is still historically low, while the rate of inflation has effectively returned to the Fed’s 2% annual target. “Without an increase in hiring, even moderate levels of job losses will likely cause the unemployment rate to pick up.”

Hate crime and terrorism charges were announced Thursday after a Jewish man was shot while walking to synagogue in Chicago over the weekend in what police now say was a “targeted” attack. On Thursday, Abdallahi was charged with an additional felony count of terrorism and one felony count of a hate crime, Chicago’s top cop, Supt. “We want everybody to know that we will never tolerate violence that’s rooted in hate and bigotry,” Snelling said during a press conference announcing the charges. “We are all working together to put an end to the hatred of our Jewish siblings.”Foxx noted that terrorism charges in such cases are rare. “Members of the Jewish Orthodox community are the most vulnerable to violent attacks,” Rabbi Sholomo Soroka said.

FARUKH NAGAR, India — The words “Indian Fireworks” are spelled out faintly in Hindi on the disused storefront. The small factory and dozens of others in this town a couple of miles from India’s capital, New Delhi, once produced a dizzying array of fireworks. Now there are neither fireworks nor any shoppers at the abandoned workshops of Farukh Nagar, which had produced the pyrotechnics since before the country’s independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The town stands as a grim reminder of the government’s crackdown on pollution and what it deems dangerous fireworks. “No place celebrated Diwali like we did.”

But the former president, no stranger to personal attacks, reserved his most violent comments for former Rep. Liz Cheney. In a lengthy and uncompromising riff on Cheney, Trump seemed to insinuate that the former congresswoman would be less of a “war hawk” — as Trump referred to her — if she was in a war herself with guns “trained on her face.”“She’s a radical war hawk. You know when the guns are trained on her face — you know, they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building,” Trump continued. In the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the relationship between Trump and Cheney frayed. Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the architects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, have endorsed Harris over Trump.

Sales of single-family homes were down 12% in September compared with the same time in the previous year. But interest rates, rising home prices and skyrocketing insurance costs likely played bigger roles than the recent hurricanes. “Florida recovers much faster than you think,” said Brad O’Connor, chief economist for Florida Realtors. Because of stricter building codes implemented in the years after Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida in 1992, newer homes withstand hurricanes better than older ones, O’Connor said. The number of households dropped from about 340,000 to about 326,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

There are questions on whether North Korea has acquired the technology to shield warheads from the high-temperature, high-stress environment of atmospheric reentry. Many foreign analysts say North Korea also must have improved altitude control and guidance systems for missiles. They say North Korea needs an ability to place multiple warheads on a single missile to defeat its rivals’ missile defenses. All of North Korea’s known ICBM tests, including Thursday’s, have been performed on steep angles to avoid neighboring countries. North Korea’s reported troop dispatch highlights the expanding military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.

In contrast to Trump's trade policy, reduced trade tensions under Harris could lead to gains for FedEx , which has advanced more than 8% this year. CNN —Donald Trump said former Rep. Liz Cheney is a “war hawk” who should be sent into the line of fire, as he raged against one of his most prominent intra-party critics while campaigning Thursday night in Arizona. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK?” Trump said. She played a leading role on the House select committee that investigated the attack, and later was ousted from her deep-red Wyoming House seat by a Trump-backed primary opponent in 2022. In recent weeks, Cheney has campaigned alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, urging Republicans to set aside party differences to back the Democrat and reject a candidate she says poses a threat to democracy. “I don’t blame him for sticking with his daughter, but his daughter’s a very dumb individual — very dumb,” Trump said.
