I focused on a client nicheI started working as a virtual assistant in January 2021. I connected with clients organically on InstagramI put all my time and effort into making my Instagram profile engaging. I'd find clients I wanted to work with and comment on their posts and respond to their Instagram stories. I'd have about five or six clients on the go at a time, and I'd work for each one every day. With each client, I'd explain on the call that I had a minimum length of four months for each contract.

For the six years he worked on “The Mentalist,” beginning in 2009, Jordan Harper’s job was far more than a writing gig. But by 2018, when he worked on “Hightown,” a drama for Starz, the business of television writing had changed substantially. The job of overseeing the filming and editing fell largely to the showrunner, the writer-producer in charge of a series. “On a show like ‘The Mentalist,’ we’d all go to set,” Mr. Harper said. They say the new approach requires more frequent job changes, making their work less steady, and has lowered writers’ earnings.

InDrive is a ride-hailing app that lets customers haggle with drivers for fares. Many drivers are Uber and Lyft contractors eager to check out inDrive's promise of letting drivers and passengers negotiate ride prices, Arsen Tomsky, inDrive's CEO and founder, said. In 2022, inDrive was the second most downloaded ride-hailing app globally, behind Uber, according to Data.AI. Though it started in Russia, inDrive fully separated from its Russian business last year after the country invaded Ukraine, the company said. In addition to ride-hailing, inDrive in other global markets has added new business segments, including freight delivery, task assistance, and package delivery.

But the release of half a dozen movies about brands — Barbie, Flamin' Hot Cheetos, Tetris, Nike Air, BlackBerry, and Beanie Babies — in six months isn't just the result of Hollywood groupthink and coincidence. But just as these brand-centric movies ring hollow, so does the gig economy they're catering to. While the plot isn't about the making of Barbie, Barbie and Ken do step outside Barbie Land to peek behind the curtains of their creation.) As more companies look to gig workers to replace full-time jobs, more workers take up gig work. As the economy continues to emphasize the importance of self-branding through gig work, brand movies will continue to resonate.

The number of people doing platform gig work like deliveries on apps in the US grew by over 150% during the pandemic. The researchers used tax data from 90 gig economy platforms and apps for their analysis. "COVID was a watershed moment for a particular type of platform gig work, which is delivery work," Koustas said. Gig workers became younger and more female; 44% of transportation and delivery platform workers were female by 2021, per the working paper. While platform gig work climbed during the pandemic, a research brief about the working paper results states that other contract and freelance work fell during COVID.

Two summers ago, recent law school graduate Alison Chan was told she needed to quit her full-time job if she wanted to pass the bar exam. This year, she's on track to earn an average of $3,750 per month. The side hustle also let Chan keep her full-time job and create another stream of income while studying for the bar. "When I did my taxes last year, I realized [my side hustle] was like a second salary," Chan, 29, tells CNBC Make It. Here's how she built a reputation and clientele on Rover, and how she juggles the side hustle with a full-time job.

The delivery app Shipt released a delivery challenge featured on Roblox's popular "Driving Empire." It felt like gamified gig work, with the mindset of a "Fast & Furious" driver racing against the clock. In the game, which is featured as a challenge on Roblox's popular racing game, "Driving Empire," gig work is gamified. Players race against the clock to deliver school-supplies orders to customers — essentially playing the role of a Shipt delivery worker. Shipt did not answer questions regarding its gig workers.

In this economy, the winner is weather apps

Weather apps are tech's sleeper hit. The Guardian is rather boldly reporting that weather apps have become an "addiction." At best, weather apps "perform about as well as meteorologists, but some of the most popular ones fare much worse," Charlie Warzel recently wrote in The Atlantic. Still, there's a weather app for everyone: Sassy weather apps, irreverent weather apps, fashion-conscious weather apps, practical weather apps, and aesthetic weather apps. A weather app can use US government data (and many do, The Guardian reported) which is free to use for any purpose, according to the National Weather Service's website.

watch nowSINGAPORE — Gig workers in Singapore face "vulnerabilities" that need to be addressed, said the country's senior minister of state for manpower. Gig workers face 'significant management control'The minister clarified that a legal mandate for gig workers is "not exactly the same as a union." That includes changes in matching and pricing algorithms on platforms that may affect the livelihood of gig workers. The expense-to-income ratio of gig workers was 112% in May — "significantly higher" than the median customer's 57%, DBS said. "Tripartism involves both government, platform companies in this case, and also platform workers in the unions … the three parties working closely together will form the foundation for that relationship of trust."

Coleman said he's tried delivering with Instacart, Uber Eats, and Grubhub, but that he's found considerably more success with DoorDash. Jason Levin dropped out of college and turned his content creator side-hustle into a full-time job. He now makes between $2,000 and $5,000 a month by making memes and copywriting for startups and VCs. The growth came mostly from writing Twitter threads on marketing case studies and by making funny memes. While I made about $75 in crypto from the first few memes, I'm now earning between $2,000 and $5,000 a month from between three to five clients. I'm proud to say I'm a "meme lord" now, getting paid to make memes and silly content for companies.

July 15 (Reuters) - Rare twin strikes by Hollywood actors and film and television writers are casting a pall over British Columbia's creative industry, which has become a hub for American film and TV production. Film production in British Columbia is down to "a trickle," said Gemma Martini, Chair of the Motion Picture Production Industry Association and CEO of Martini Film Studios. TAKING A TOLLReverberations that started on May 2 with the writers' strike grew in British Columbia, where most productions have American components. First the business was hit by the writers' strike: "Because no scripts are being written, people aren't coming to scout our locations." A DBS study conducted in May 2023 found that gig workers were the most financially stretched, with relatively less stable income flows and savings declining year on year to an "unhealthy range." High inflation and interest rates have diminished the purchasing power of Singaporeans — and gig workers and low-income individuals are the most affected. That's according to a new DBS study conducted in May 2023, which analyzed its database of about 1.2 million customers. In Singapore, gig workers are generally self-employed. The expense-to-income ratio of gig workers was 112% in May 2023 — "significantly higher" than the median customer's 57%, DBS said.

Ma, who also co-founded e-commerce firm Alibaba (BABA), has a 9.9% stake in Ant, according to Bloomberg. Chinese regulators pulled the plug on Ant’s $37 billion IPO in November 2020 and ordered the company to restructure its business. In recent years, he has reportedly spent time in Japan, home to his friend and Alibaba investor, SoftBank (SFTBF) CEO Masa Son, and in Hong Kong. In January, Ma gave up control of Ant after it spent two years revamping its business from consumer lending to insurance products at the behest of regulators. Ant and its units were also fined $984 million by Chinese financial regulators last week, for allegedly breaking rules related to consumer protection and corporate governance.
