Opinion | Bernie Sanders: Joe Biden for President

I will do all that I can to see that President Biden is re-elected. I strongly disagree with Mr. Biden on the question of U.S. support for Israel’s horrific war against the Palestinian people. I strongly disagree with the president’s belief that the Affordable Care Act, as useful as it has been, will ever address America’s health care crisis. Our health care system is broken, dysfunctional and wildly expensive and needs to be replaced with a “Medicare for all” single-payer system. Health care is a human right.

Wells Fargo Why we own it : We bought Wells Fargo as a turnaround story under CEO Charlie Scharf. We are more excited by the outperformance of non-interest income than we are disappointed with the miss on net interest income. However, the team added, many of the factors driving net interest income are uncertain heading into the second half of the year. We don't like to see guidance misses, but bank interest income estimates depend on interest rates, which Wells Fargo has no real control over. Non-interest income increased 12% thanks to higher asset-based fees driven by an increase in market valuations.

Now, such technology appears to be on the horizon, with scientists unveiling a prototype spacesuit system that turns urine into drinking water. When spending these long periods on spacewalks, astronauts currently wear the familiar white puffy EVA suits, which contain a maximum absorbency garment. Above is a side view of the whole system, worn as a backpack. ‘Dune’ systemTo “promote astronaut wellbeing,” the researchers have designed a novel in-suit urine collection and filtration system, or “Dune” system,” Etlin said. New York Philharmonic Chief Abruptly Steps Down

Gary Ginstling, the New York Philharmonic’s president and chief executive, abruptly resigned on Thursday after just a year on the job, leaving the orchestra in limbo as it grapples with challenges including an investigation into its workplace culture after two players were accused of misconduct. His departure comes as the orchestra’s musicians and the administration are in the midst of heated talks over a new labor contract; the current agreement expires in September. The musicians have been seeking large wage increases. As the orchestra prepares for its 2024-25 season, it is facing another leadership void: It will not have a music director. Jaap van Zweden’s six-year tenure comes to an end this summer, and his successor, the star conductor Gustavo Dudamel, does not start in the role until 2026.

When intelligence chiefs of the United States, Israel and Egypt went to Qatar on Wednesday for talks aimed at brokering a cease-fire in Gaza, there was more on the line than Israel’s war against Hamas. Hezbollah and Hamas are both allied with Iran in what they call “the axis of resistance,” a coalition that opposes Israel’s right to exist. Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon, who are backed by Iran, have traded fire since the war in Gaza began after Hamas led an attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Israeli government officials and military leaders have in recent weeks toured northern Israel and met with troops stationed there who were preparing for a potential escalation. Whether efforts at de-escalating the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah can succeed may well depend on how the cease-fire talks in Qatar progress.

Pfizer on Thursday said it will move forward with a once-daily version of its weight loss pill, danuglipron, after it saw "encouraging" data in an ongoing early-stage trial. Pfizer is one of several drugmakers racing to win a slice of the market for a highly popular class of weight loss and diabetes drugs called GLP-1 agonists. At the time, the pharmaceutical giant said phase one trial data on the once-daily version would "inform a path forward." Pfizer's danuglipron is a GLP-1 that promotes weight loss in the same way as Novo Nordisk' s injection Wegovy and diabetes treatment Ozempic. But he said Pfizer was looking for potential licensing deals or earlier-stage weight loss drugs.

CNN —The average menstruating person will spend about five years of their total reproductive lifespan using an estimated 11,000 tampons, sanitary pads, panty liners and other menstrual products, experts say. What if some of those menstrual aids contain heavy metals or potentially toxic chemicals linked to chronic diseases and reproductive and developmental problems? “I do not want people to panic, but to be aware that heavy metals have been found in these menstrual products,” Schilling said. “However, there is no reason for people to be afraid to use menstrual products at this time,” she added. On July 1, more than a million workers became eligible for overtime pay. The 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act established a 40-hour workweek with certain workers eligible for overtime pay of 1.5 times their regular wage if they work past the 40-hour mark. Before the rule change on July 1, only around 15% of salaried workers were eligible for overtime pay. Up until July 1, salaried workers making $684 per week, or $35,568 per year, or more were exempt from getting overtime pay. Before the rule change, some workers making less than $107,432 per year could also qualify for overtime pay, though the parameters for qualifying are a little bit different from those given to low-wage workers.

Awaiting England in Sunday’s final is the formidable foe of Spain, which has been unequivocally the best team of Euro 2024 so far. After only seven minutes, Simons – named after Barcelona great Xavi Hernández – dispossessed Declan Rice in midfield and stormed towards the England penalty area, before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Jordan Pickford and into the top corner. Foden, who was having by far his best game of the tournament, then hit the woodwork himself as the post denied the Manchester City forward a stunning curled effort. President Biden has committed to his second major network interview since the debate debacle that has fueled questions about his continued candidacy. The president will tape an interview with the NBC News anchor Lester Holt on Monday in Austin, Texas, the network said on Wednesday. NBC plans to air the interview “in its entirety” that evening at 9 p.m. Eastern, a similar prime-time placement as ABC’s interview with Mr. Biden that aired last Friday. Mr. Holt, who last interviewed the president in February 2022, will speak with Mr. Biden for at least 15 minutes at the LBJ Presidential Library, NBC said. Excerpts from their conversation are expected to appear on that evening’s “NBC Nightly News,” with the unedited interview to follow in prime-time.

The authorities in England were hunting on Wednesday for a man who was suspected of killing three women the previous night with a crossbow and possibly other weapons in a small, leafy town north of London, according to Hertfordshire Police. The police said they arrived at the scene just before 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday and found three women with serious injuries. The BBC reported that the victims were the wife and two daughters of one of its horse-racing commentators. “As we’ve just reported, the three women killed in a crossbow attack in Bushey, near Watford, are Carol Hunt, the wife of the BBC commentator John Hunt, and two of their daughters,” the broadcaster wrote. The police were searching for Kyle Clifford, 26, they said, warning people that “he may be in possession of a crossbow, do not approach.” It was not immediately clear on Wednesday what the relation was between Mr. Clifford and the three women.

Roth individual retirement account conversions are a popular way to reduce future levies on pretax 401(k) or IRA withdrawals — and you can smooth out the upfront tax hit with a "Roth conversion ladder," experts say. Roth conversions transfer pretax or nondeductible IRA money to a Roth IRA, which offers future tax-free growth. The trade-off is regular income taxes incurred that year on the converted balance. By comparison, a Roth conversion ladder is a series of conversions over multiple years, meaning "you're paying taxes in smaller increments," said certified financial planner Preston Cherry, founder and president of Concurrent Financial Planning in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Of course, boosting your adjusted gross income any year can trigger other tax consequences, such as phaseouts for certain tax breaks.
