Ukraine has received all 31 of the formidable M1A1 Abrams tanks promised by the US. Ukraine will have to be careful with how it employs the Abrams, especially as the counteroffensive likely slows in coming months. But don't expect to see many showdowns with Russian tanks. Russian minefields have held Ukraine's armor at bay, while artillery and anti-tank missiles threaten the vehicles that do advance. Among other things, "There's a need for tourniquets," Melinda Haring told Insider. "The medic that I spoke to said they need more armored cars," Haring said. The reason Ukrainian medics may enjoy some respite in the winter is they can transport people from the battlefield using the cover of darkness. Additionally, Harding said, there's "a need for tourniquets," without which injured soldiers would bleed out in armored vehicles. About 70,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, according to a US estimate reported by The New York Times in August; between 100,000 and 120,000 have also been wounded.

Ukraine is falling behind Russia when it comes to the future of warfare, an expert told Insider. Opinion | The Conflicted Legacy of Mitt Romney
  + stars: | 2023-10-27 | by ( The Ezra Klein Show | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
After factional infighting dominated the G.O.P.’s struggle to elect a House speaker, it feels weirdly quaint to revisit Mitt Romney’s career. He’s served as governor, U.S. senator and presidential nominee for a Republican Party now nearly unrecognizable from what it was when he started out. At the end of his time in public office, Romney has found a new clarity in his identity as the consummate institutionalist in an increasingly anti-constitutionalist party. In this resulting biography “Romney: A Reckoning,” Coppins pushes Romney to wrestle with his own role — even complicity — in what his party has become. In this conversation, guest host Carlos Lozada and Coppins examine Romney’s legacy at a time when it may seem increasingly out of place with the mainstream G.O.P.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Regular-season conference champions are no longer guaranteed spots in the National Invitation Tournament. The NIT Board of Managers tweaked its qualifying rules for its postseason tournament Friday, saying regular-season champs who do not win their conference tournament and are not otherwise selected to the NCAA Tournament will not receive an automatic bid to the NIT. Instead, the NIT will guarantee two teams — based on the NET rankings — from each of major six conferences, the Atlantic Coast, the Big East, the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Pac-12 and the Southeastern. The top two teams in the NET rankings not qualifying for the NCAA Tournament from each conference, regardless of win-loss record, will be selected. Additionally, the 12 teams automatically selected will be guaranteed the opportunity to host a game in the first round of the NIT.

Photo: James MacDonald/Bloomberg NewsThe Canadian company responsible for managing the key St. Lawrence Seaway will resume negotiations later this week in an effort to end a strike that has shut the trade route that connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. St. Lawrence Seaway Management said talks with trade union Unifor are set for Friday morning. Negotiations over a wage deal broke down over the weekend and about 360 workers who operate lock systems, bridges and other infrastructure along the Canadian side of the seaway walked off the job just after midnight Sunday.

The strike has shut down 13 locks between Lake Erie and Montreal, bottling up ships in the Great Lakes and preventing more ships from coming in. It’s the first time that a strike has shut down the vital shipping artery since 1968. A U.S. Navy warship, the littoral combat ship USS Marinette, was supposed to leave Cleveland on Lake Erie on Monday, but remains stuck. Shipments within the four Great Lakes from Superior to Erie such as iron ore and coal can still go through. MarineTraffic.com showed that it was headed into Lake Erie, but it can go no farther without a resolution.

Review: ‘Lyonesse’ Is a Starry Mess
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Matt Wolf | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“We dream big,” says a no-nonsense film executive early in “Lyonesse,” the starry, if overstuffed, new play that opened Wednesday night at the Harold Pinter Theater, in London. And so, too, does this West End debut from Penelope Skinner, a British playwright whose works have long enlivened small theaters on both sides of the Atlantic. The themes arrive thick and fast across nearly three hours: #MeToo, cancel culture, the tyranny of men and many others. But not even Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas, the production’s commercial draws, can transform the scattershot material into a coherent whole. It takes courage to open a new play in the West End without a previous run somewhere else, but “Lyonesse” whimpers where it should roar.

Intra-European travel has been doing very well," said aviation analyst James Halstead, adding that limited planes meant ticket prices could stay high. Britain's easyJet (EZJ.L) said earlier this month it wanted to more than double profits and expand its fleet, even though fuel prices could mean higher ticket prices. Spot Northwest European jet fuel prices were at $957 per metric ton on Wednesday, up 5% from before the assault. JET FUELSome airlines have already warned that rising fuel costs will drive up ticket prices or dampen future earnings. He said ticket prices could go up by a mid-single digit percentage ahead of Christmas.

In a 7,000-word essay for Foreign Affairs magazine published this week, Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s national security adviser, tried to sum up the state of the Middle East. Before the article was posted online, Foreign Affairs asked Mr. Sullivan to update it to reflect the Hamas attack. The online version scrubbed Mr. Sullivan’s “quieter” sentence, as well as his assertion that the Biden administration had “de-escalated” crises in Gaza. A fund-raising email sent to supporters by the Trump campaign on Wednesday chastised “Biden’s Delusional National Security Adviser” with a link to a story about Mr. Sullivan’s comments. Spain to create emergency accommodation for 3,000 migrants
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Borja Suarez/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMADRID, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Spain said on Thursday it would create additional emergency accommodation for 3,000 undocumented migrants in military barracks, hotels and hostels amid a 55% jump in arrivals by sea this year, which has triggered political tension. Escriva declined to disclose how many additional beds will be created, but a ministry source told Reuters it would be around 3,000 in total. But this time the central government's approach has been to expand emergency accommodations across the country, hoping to ease pressure on the Canaries. Following police screenings, migrants will be placed in the military barracks, hotels, hostels and other types of accommodations on a voluntary basis, the ministry source said. Escriva argued the situation was well-handled and manageable, and said some conservative politicians were whipping up what he called xenophobic rhetoric.

Oregon State and Washington State claim the actions of the Pac-12 and Commissioner George Kliavkoff in response to members announcing their intent to leave the conference in 2024 show those departing schools relinquished their rights to decide the long-term future of the league. “The Pac-12 cannot continue to be paralyzed at such a critical time," Washington State and Oregon State said in a joint statement.
