Sports streaming venture Venu priced at $42.99 a month
  + stars: | 2024-08-01 | by ( Lillian Rizzo | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Venu Sports, the sports streaming joint venture between Disney's ESPN, Warner Bros. The high-end pricing — common in direct-to-consumer sports streaming services — was expected in part so it wouldn't shake up any carriage agreements with traditional pay TV distributors. Live sports remain the highest rated TV programming and are the most costly part of the pay TV bundle. Users who sign up for Venu at $42.99 a month will have access to that entry pricing for 12 months, Venu noted Thursday — signaling there could be price increases ahead. The upcoming bundle will be priced at $16.99 a month with ads, and $29.99 a month ad-free.

There was a perverse view this year that bad economic news was actually good news for the stock market, as the heat coming off the economy would give the Federal Reserve the greenlight to cut interest rates. This made some sense with inflation for the first time in a while becoming the primary market bogeyman over a slowing economy. Announced layoffs last month were the highest for any July in more than two decades, outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported. Investors got what they thought they wanted, with the 10-year Treasury yield breaking below 4% for the first time since February. Even tech stocks found themselves in the red as they too, may be hurt more by a slowing economy, than their valuations are boosted by lower rates.

However, in New York, where Abad lived briefly in the 1970s, while studying painting at the Art Students League, her work has been scarce. The Museum of Modern Art owns nothing by her, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art just acquired its first piece. During her life, she proposed shows to U.S. museums and received around 100 rejection letters, her family has said. MoMA PS1 is hosting the first retrospective dedicated to Abad, which was organized by Victoria Sung at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where it ran last year. It consists of more than 50 works, and while it should be two or four times larger — she was protean and prolific — it is still thrilling.

One day after federal prosecutors announced that they had struck a plea deal with three men accused of plotting the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, New Yorkers and family members of victims had mixed reactions to the sudden news. Under the agreement, the three men — including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the accused mastermind — will serve life in prison but avoid a death-penalty trial. “If Khalid Shaikh Mohammed doesn’t deserve the death penalty, who does?” said Don Arias, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, whose brother Adam was killed in the World Trade Center. From his home in Florida, Mr. Arias, 67, remembered days of searching for his brother before his remains were identified. Mr. Arias was upset about the plea deal, and especially about the sense that people seemed to have lost interest in an act of terrorism that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and shattered Americans’ sense of security.

Investors have several reasons to be optimistic toward bitcoin even as it enters one of the sleepiest trading months of the year. It has finished seven of the past 11 Augusts in the red, generating an average 2.69% return for the month, according to CoinGlass, largely due to a more than 65% gain in August 2017. "It's very likely that's going to continue playing a part here" in the month ahead, Duong said. Pandl at Grayscale is upbeat on the prospect of bitcoin reaching another all-time high sometime this year, and ether retesting $4,000. "Equity markets have wobbled but, so far, bitcoin has performed well, trading more like a hedge against dollar weakness," Pandl said.

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks during the Meta Connect event at Meta headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on Sept. 27, 2023. Meta is slated to report second-quarter earnings on Wednesday after the close of regular trading. Meta's ad revenue is projected to show an increase of 19% to $37.6 billion, according to StreetAccount. Heading into Meta's report on Wednesday, the digital ad market has shown some signs of weakness. Alphabet reported lower-than-expected ad revenue out of YouTube last week, and on Tuesday, Pinterest issued disappointing third-quarter guidance, leading to a 15% plunge in the stock after hours.

What to Watch as the Fed Meets on Wednesday
  + stars: | 2024-07-31 | by ( Jeanna Smialek | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Economists and traders widely expect Fed officials to cut their policy rate at their next meeting, in September. Wall Street will closely watch for any hints about the future in both the Fed’s statement at 2 p.m. and a subsequent news conference with Jerome H. Powell, the chair of the central bank. And Mr. Powell is sure to face questions about how officials are thinking about the potential for moves after that. Watch the Fed’s statement for changes. The Fed’s statement, a slowly changing document that officials release after each two-day meeting, currently states that Fed policymakers expect to hold rates steady until they have “gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably” down.

The Justice Department has denied a request by Zacarias Moussaoui, the only prisoner ever convicted in the United States of having ties to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, to serve the remainder of his life sentence in his native France. Mr. Moussaoui had made the application from the supermax prison in Colorado, using a process that is routinely available to foreign nationals held as U.S. prisoners. Then on Wednesday afternoon, two relatives of people killed in the attacks said they were notified by the Justice Department that the request was denied. “Our office appreciates your concerns and comments regarding Zacarias Moussaoui,” the email said. “I am notifying you that Mr. Moussaoui’s application to transfer to France was denied by the United States on July 26, 2024.”No explanation was offered for the delay in notification.

Accused 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and two other men charged with plotting the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks by al-Qaeda have agreed to plead guilty in the military commissions process, the Pentagon said Wednesday. The terms of the plea deals for the three men, who have been in custody since 2003, were not released, but they are expected to plead guilty to some charges, and potentially avoid death sentences as a result. The Office of Military Commission said that the defendants will enter their pleas as early as next week at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In addition to Mohammed, the other men expected to plead guilty are Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin 'Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi.

While there are still concerns about the company's aggressive AI spending, we believe these investments will pay off in the long run. Both trends were cited as the main drivers behind Meta's revenue outperformance in the quarter. Zuckerberg added that AI is opening the door to new experiences and opportunities, especially with Meta AI, which is powered by the company's large language model that is often referred to as Llama. Zuckerberg said he believes Meta AI will be the most used AI assistant in the world by year end. The man accused of plotting the attacks of Sept. 11 and two of his accomplices have agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in exchange for a life sentence rather than a death-penalty trial at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, prosecutors said Wednesday. A senior Pentagon official approved the deal for Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, according to Defense Department officials with knowledge of the agreement. The men have been in U.S. custody since 2003. But the case had become mired in more than a decade of pretrial proceedings that focused on the question of whether their torture in secret C.I.A. Market pricing currently indicates an absolute certainty that the Fed will approve its first reduction in more than four years — when it meets Sept. 17-18. They don't want investors to start pricing in a rate cut coming in September and there's literally nothing else that could possibly happen," he said. "Opening the door for that rate cut is probably the most appropriate thing for them at this point," Reynolds added. Model Bella Hadid issued a statement after starring in a controversial Adidas campaign that the sportswear company said had an "unintentional" connection to a bloody terrorist attack. The ad campaign for Adidas' new retro trainers, called the SL72s, was a nod to the 1972 Munich Olympics. Released earlier in July, the advertisement featured Hadid holding a bouquet of flowers while wearing the shoes, which originally debuted in 1972 for the Munich Olympics. Hadid said she was not aware of the connection to the historical events of the 1972 Munich Olympics, and that she would not have taken part in the campaign had she known. "Adidas should have known and I should have done more research so that I too would have known and understood, and spoken up."

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Monday that while he "probably" will debate Vice President Kamala Harris, he "could also make a case" for avoiding a face-to-face confrontation with his likely Democratic opponent. Before that debate, Trump had repeatedly challenged Biden to face him "anytime, anywhere, anyplace." But when asked about debating Harris, he struck a different tone. "We'll see if Trump shows," Harris campaign spokesman Michael Tyler said in a statement. While Trump told reporters last week he would be willing to debate Harris "multiple times," he also said that he was "not thrilled about ABC."

China's industrial profits grew at a faster clip in June, official data showed on Saturday, even as businesses were grappling with a downshift in consumers' sentiment amid a shaky economic recovery. A 3.6% year-on-year rise in profits last month followed a 0.7% gain in May, while first-half earnings were up 3.5%, accelerating from a 3.4% increase in the January-May period, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data showed. Roughly half of more than 10 mainland-listed alcoholic beverage firms that had released forecasts for H1 earnings expected a loss-making first half. State-owned firms reported profits up 0.3% in the first half, foreign firms recorded an 11% gain, while private-sector companies booked a 6.8% rise, according to a breakdown of the NBS data. Industrial profit numbers cover firms with annual revenues of at least 20 million yuan ($2.75 million) from their main operations.

Earlier this month, the US and allies practiced taking out a large surface ship with long-range weapons, including, for the first time, a US Air Force B-2 bomber. It showed the US military can use one of its most survivable weapons platforms, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, to sink a major surface ship with a low-cost guided bomb. The Air Force says its stealthy characteristics allow it to penetrate heavily defended areas and also fly with a small chance of being detected by radar at high altitudes. Mating it up with relatively cheap and demonstrably effective precision-guided bombs with warheads of up to 2,000 pounds could give the Air Force bombers the “anti-ship lethality” of a submarine-launched torpedo without the liabilities of a submarine, according to a US Air Force website. The Air Force first tested QUICKSINK in 2022, when an F-15 fighter jet released a GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) that destroyed a full-scale surface target in the Gulf of Mexico, according to an Air Force statement.

Early on Sept. 30, 1893, the Margaret A. Muir schooner, carrying cargo of bulk salt, cleared the narrow Straits of Mackinac on its way down Lake Michigan toward Chicago’s port. As the crew rounded Michigan and steered south, the ship encountered relentless 50-mile-an-hour winds. Captain David Clow and his crew of six barely made it out alive, steering a lifeboat through high waves to the Wisconsin shore. In his grief, Captain Clow, who was 71 years old and had survived at least three earlier shipwrecks, swore off sailing. The Muir joined thousands of other ships claimed by the stormy waters of the Great Lakes in the 19th century.
