The tabletop simulation presented a hypothetical scenario in which cities like Dallas, Washington, DC, and Madrid were at risk of a large asteroid impact. "A large asteroid impact is potentially the only natural disaster humanity has the technology to predict years in advance and take action to prevent," Lindley Johnson, a NASA planetary defense officer emeritus, said in a press release. That's because they didn't think Congress would approve funding for a critical space mission to study the asteroid "unless impact became certain," NASA's summary said. Options for preventing an asteroid impact include shooting the asteroid with lasers, launching a nuclear bomb at it, or simply smacking a space probe into it to nudge it away from Earth. Participants weren't sure Congress would fund the mission unless the asteroid was a certain threat — not a 72% chance of threat.

The technology to store renewable energy for long periods hasn’t quite been mastered, either. The interconnector would send renewable energy both east and west, taking advantage of the sun’s diurnal journey across the sky. The transatlantic interconnector is still a proposal, but networks of green energy cables are starting to sprawl across the world’s sea beds. They are fast becoming part of a global climate solution, transmitting large amounts of renewable energy to countries struggling to make the green transition alone. CNN —Forecasters will soon be able to see real-time mapping of lightning activity on Earth and keep a closer eye on solar storms unleashed by the sun thanks to a new weather satellite. The weather satellite lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 5:26 p.m. What sets GOES-U apart from other satellites is that it’s carrying a new capability to keep an eye on space weather. The coronagraph will provide continuous observations of the solar corona, or the hot outer layer of the sun’s atmosphere, which is where space weather events originate, said Elsayed Talaat, director of NOAA’s Office of Space Weather Observations. The instrument’s capabilities will allow NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center to issue warnings and watches one to four days in advance and “mark a new chapter in space weather observatoions,” Talaat said.

The growing electricity demand from corporate America, particularly Big Tech, and the retirement of coal plants across the U.S. are creating a major opportunity for renewable energy, according to UBS. UBS sees solar and wind supplying 40% and 30% of the power demand, respectively, while natural gas will meet the remaining 30%. At the same time, "there is a straight line of direct incremental demand and financial support for renewables as corporate electricity demand increases through their 100% clean energy or 100% renewable commitments," the analysts said. Overall, solar will grow to 12.5% of electricity generation by 2030, up from less than 6% in 2023, according to UBS estimates. "There is likely a substantial market opportunity to provide reliable electricity generation and direct infrastructure for data centers," the analysts said.
