People who lost a significant amount of weight with semaglutide saw major improvements in osteoarthritis knee pain, research published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine finds. “Any sort of dramatic weight loss will relieve pain,” Bliddal said. In another study led by Bliddal, people with knee osteoarthritis were given an older weight loss drug, liraglutide. The average BMI in that study was about 32, lower than the average in the new study. Most of the people in the study had a BMI over 35, and nearly half had a BMI of over 40.

A New York woman and two children, including an infant, died after going over Niagara Falls this week, state police said. The incident occurred about 9 p.m. Monday, near Goat Island, state police said in a statement. The 33-year-old woman and the two children, a 9-year-old and a 5-month-old, were all from Niagara Falls, state police said. State police did not specify in the statement the relationship between the woman and the children. An investigation determined the woman and children crossed over a safety guard rail and went over Niagara Falls on Luna Island, which is attached to Goat Island, according to state police.

Kamala Harris’ deployment of prominent Republican Trump critics hasn’t convinced a new focus group of voters who backed Nikki Haley in the GOP presidential primary. “It’s repulsive,” said Dale J., a 67-year-old from Minnesota who voted for Trump in 2020 and plans to do so again. "I really liked the idea that Nikki Haley was a woman, and I thought she would have more closer values to mine than Trump. (One of these voters is a registered Democrat who voted in her state’s open presidential primary for Haley.) Only one voter, 40-year-old Chris P. from Michigan, backed Trump in 2020 and is considering voting for Harris now.

It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done.”The White House quickly insisted that Biden was not calling Trump's supporters "garbage." Biden's comments offered a welcome distraction for Trump, who had been facing heavy criticism for the Garden event, which was packed with a series of crude and racist comments. A Trump campaign official said they were planning to aggressively use the Biden remark to hit Democrats. The Biden comments also threatened to cloud out a Harris' rally Tuesday night at which she offered her closing argument. On Wednesday, Harris was forced to distance herself from Biden's comments.

In an interview with the New York Times, Stewart praised the first half of Netflix's "Martha" while describing the rest as "a bit lazy." She told the newspaper over the phone that she felt the film spent too long on her time in prison and lacked color. "The trial and the actual incarceration was less than two years out of an 83-year life," Stewart said. In 2017, Stewart described her time in federal lockup as a "horrifying experience" and that "nothing" was good about it. "And that’s the thing I like most about the documentary," Stewart said.

In fact, the state polls are showing not just an astonishingly tight race, but also an improbably tight race. Imagine if pollsters in this world conducted 100 identical surveys of 863 randomly selected voters (that’s the average sample size of this year’s swing state polls). Actual swing state polls show far less variation than the benchmarks we would expect in a perfect polling world. Visualizing how the reported polling margins compare to what we would expect in a perfect polling world strongly suggests “herding” of swing state polling margins around the statewide polling averages. The pattern is especially pronounced in Pennsylvania, where a huge share of the public polls have showed a tied race.

Five people have been charged in Texas, accused of organizing and participating in an illegal cheating scheme that certified more than 200 unqualified teachers and saw the plot’s “kingpin” rake in more than $1 million, prosecutors announced. Investigators noticed a pattern: Numerous teacher certification candidates who previously failed certification exams would drive from faraway Texas cities to the Houston area to take an exam. Then a tip came in that exposed the cheating scheme. He'd pay her about 20% of the $2,500 to allow the cheating, Levine said. “They are going to go over every teacher, I’m sure, and take whatever action they see fit if they believe someone fraudulently obtained a certification,” Levine said.

“We have to reduce spending to live within our means,” Musk said. That gives Musk’s frankness about reductions — and his track record of making large, painful cuts at his own companies — added weight. The Trump campaign didn’t immediately comment but has previously said that the GOP agenda wouldn’t cause short-term economic hardship. There’s some skepticism on Wall Street that a new Trump administration could implement spending cuts on the scale Musk has proposed. “They’re both indicating they intend to maintain substantial deficits and elevated government spending, certainly compared with the strength of the economy,” Elliott said.

Job creation was strongly concentrated in companies with 500 or more employees, which added 140,000 of the total. The move could prompt legal challenges, as a similar policy did in the first Trump administration. To pressure local law enforcement agencies to cooperate, the Trump team would cut off their access to Justice Department grants, the three sources said. After an appeals court sided with the Trump administration, the Democratic-controlled states appealed to the Supreme Court. And that legal maneuver, in essence, ran out the clock on the first Trump administration. Vitiello said a second Trump administration would also offer additional funding to state and local police departments that participate in the mass deportations.

But now the organization is turning its attention (and its rats’ noses) to the global illegal wildlife trade. “Unfortunately, organized crime knows there’s a real weak spot in detection methods of ports, seaports and airports, particularly in Africa.”Traffickers disguise wildlife products in a whole host of ways, he explains. This is particularly important given that much of the illicit wildlife trade comes from some of the world’s poorest regions. “I’m hopeful that (using rats) for detecting wildlife will be a low cost, low impact, low footprint operation,” says Allan. The illegal wildlife trade not only impacts populations of the trafficked animal or plant, it can have devastating knock-on consequences for whole ecosystems.

OTTAWA, Ontario — A Canadian official alleged Tuesday that Indian Home Minister Amit Shah ordered a campaign of violence, intimidation and intelligence-gathering targeting Sikh separatists inside Canada. Indian government officials have repeatedly denied that Canada has provided evidence and have called the allegations absurd. Nathalie Drouin, Trudeau’s national security adviser, told the committee Tuesday that Canada has evidence the Indian government first gathered information on Indian nationals and Canadian citizens in Canada through diplomatic channels and proxies. Drouin said a meeting was held with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national security adviser, Ajit Doval, in Singapore two days earlier. Four Indian nationals living in Canada were charged with Niijar’s murder and are awaiting trial.

The team of two men and one woman will replace the astronauts who have lived on the Tiangong space station for the last six months, conducting a variety of experiments and maintaining the structure. China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station, mainly because of U.S. concerns over the overall control over the space program by the People’s Liberation Army, the Chinese Communist Party’s military arm. China’s moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the U.S. and others, including Japan and India. Besides putting a space station into orbit, the Chinese space agency has landed an explorer on Mars. China’s space authorities say they have measures in place in case their astronauts have to return to Earth earlier.

From 2008 through 2020, the winning candidate either swept or nearly swept the final six to eight battleground states. Are we still under-sampling Trump voters? Then again, is Trump’s improvement in the polls this cycle an indication the polling community finally got it right on the Trump vote? In 2020, the Trump campaign was the only one knocking on doors during Covid, as the Biden campaign feared scaring its supporters at the doors. The Harris campaign appears invested in doing traditional get-out-the-vote programs in all sorts of places.

Some comics online did not specifically call out Hinchcliffe’s jokes at the rally but shared broader thoughts about comedians’ crossing the line. On an August episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan said Trump should hire Hinchcliffe to “write bangers” for him on the road. But Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico landed poorly across both political parties. While most comedians did not come to Hinchcliffe’s defense, “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart said such jokes should have been expected from a comedian like Hinchcliffe. But with Hinchcliffe’s joke, she said, “it almost just felt like he was saying, ‘I don’t like Puerto Ricans,’ which is so clearly offensive.

In 2020, election week replaced election night: Joe Biden wasn’t declared the winner until Saturday. The truth is the Decision Desk cannot know until election night which scenario will unfold, regardless of how carefully we have analyzed the polls, early vote, and other election-related data. One thing is clear: The days of projecting a winner on election night itself are almost certainly over. North Carolina has a similar pattern in how it reports out the vote, with 99% of the vote counted by midnight in past elections. And unlike some other close states, it wasn’t just because the margin was so thin.

For many families, child care is often the biggest. Thanks to a state program launched during the recovery from the pandemic, they pay nothing for child care. Vice President Kamala Harris proposes capping child care costs at 7% of working families’ incomes, along with an up-to-$6,000 expanded child tax credit for those with newborns. The permanent fund now funnels more than $150 million from fossil fuel producers into child care subsidies, state officials estimate. As elder care costs continue to outpace inflation, the Democratic ticket sees that constituency as key to victory.
