Over the 12-month period ending June, about 2 of 3 active bond managers trounced their average passive counterpart, according to a recent analysis from Morningstar . There were a few tailwinds in active managers' favor. With the Fed recently cutting rates by a half point — and Chair Jerome Powell noting that two more quarter-point cuts could be in the cards this year — a new challenge awaits these active bond funds. As interest rates fall, active managers can position accordingly, said Roger Hallam, global head of rates at Vanguard. "We expect active managers to make a little more, and they should be because they're doing more trades and it costs more to manage active portfolios," said Olmsted.

His son had a tech addiction and needed limited access to computers. At my son's school, like most these days, all students had laptops. New York CNN —A massive port strike along the East and Gulf Coasts that kicked off on Tuesday has the potential to become one of America’s most disruptive work stoppages in recent times. Here’s the latest information you need to know about the port strike. People are panic-buying toilet paper, reports on social media show, displaying empty store shelves where toilet paper and sometimes paper towels used to be. Unlike toilet paper, bananas go bad, so shippers weren’t able to ship large volumes in advance of strikes. On Wednesday, Biden starkly warned against the “man-made disaster” caused by the ongoing port strike and urged the two sides to come to an agreement to avoid significant economic impacts.

There is no evidence to suggest the fire was intentionally set, Maui Fire and Public Safety Chief Bradford Ventura said. The Lahaina fire was one of three wildfires that ignited on Maui that day; the report did not address the two other, less-destructive fires. Since last year, thousands of residents have sued Hawaiian Electric, Maui County and the state of Hawaii over the fire. The utility has acknowledged that one of its downed power lines ignited a blaze early that morning off Lahainaluna Road in the hills above Lahaina. Maui County announced a few hours later that firefighters had fully contained it.

As Donald Trump calls for overhauling the Affordable Care Act with a new health care system, one Republican senator running for an influential leadership position says the party should combine that pursuit with a major tax bill in the new year. “We’ll have an opportunity next year, when it comes time to extend the Trump tax cuts, to adopt new policies that again will make health care more affordable and more personalized,” Cotton said. “Because a lot of health care in this country does go through our tax code. “Because the Democrats have become so obstructionist on President Trump, the opportunity to pass major legislation next year will probably be centered on the extension of the Trump tax cuts from 2017 in addition to other measures,” Cotton said. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who sits on the Finance Committee that oversees tax and health care policy, said Congress will scrutinize Trump’s litany of expensive proposals in a tax bill.

WASHINGTON — A group of national security experts led by Cabinet members from the Trump administration endorsed former President Donald Trump on Wednesday, citing his foreign policy record and calling him "a peacemaker." The group, organized by former Trump national security adviser Robert O'Brien and former National Security Council chief of staff Alex Gray, wrote in a letter that "securing peace" is "the legacy of Trump." The letter comes amid an escalating conflict in the Middle East between Iran and Israel, as well as Russia's war in Ukraine. "The policies of the Biden-Harris Administration have invited conflict, diminished America’s standing around the globe, and imperiled our national security," the letter says. WASHINGTON — During Donald Trump’s White House tenure, Republicans assembled the most conservative Supreme Court in a century. Now, they’re excited about the prospect of building on those efforts by confirming even more conservative justices, as well as lower-court judges, if he wins another four years. Two long-serving conservative justices will be on retirement watch in the coming years: Clarence Thomas, 76, and Samuel Alito, 74. It takes 51 votes to confirm a Supreme Court justice, so in that scenario Republicans would have the power to replace them without any input from Democrats. Some of the ads feature doctors speaking passionately about abortion and saying that Republican candidates shouldn't represent "us" or "our" communities in Congress. But in at least four instances, House Majority PAC, a super PAC aligned with House Democratic leadership, featured Republican-blasting doctors in their ads who did not live in the district where they were advertising. The path to the House majority runs through all four of the districts where these ads ran. Since then, both doctors and patients have often become key personal messengers on abortion for Democrats. But Republicans blasted House Majority PAC over the ads, calling them misleading and accusing the group of spreading falsehoods about GOP incumbents and candidates.

The Central Intelligence Agency is releasing instructions in Farsi, Mandarin and Korean to allow people to share information with the agency without running afoul of authoritarian regimes. The instructions, in a text-only video and infographic, were posted online across multiple social media platforms and sites on the dark web, the agency said. In 2023, the CIA announced it had posted instructions in Russian on how to access a site on the dark web accessible only through a Tor internet browser, which unlike most browsers has encryption protections. The spy agency’s director, William Burns, has said that disaffection in Russia after Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has created a “once-in-a-generation” recruiting opportunity for the CIA. Once a message lands at the agency, the CIA will evaluate it, the agency said.

The idea behind a high-risk pool was to provide a safety net for people with pre-existing conditions struggling to find coverage. The high-risk pools, however, were critically underfunded, making monthly premiums for some patients double what they would be for a healthy individual, Cox said. “If you got into a high-risk pool, you might have had an exclusion on your coverage for six to 12 months,” Cox said. “When it doesn’t, it collapses.”Graves said that the U.S. could move back to a high-risk pool model but it would require “a massive amount of government subsidies to work.”“They would basically have to infuse the high-risk pool with enough subsidies to keep premiums affordable for people,” he said. “We had isolated pre-existing pools for the past 25 years, and they don’t work.”

The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a review and evaluation of the 1921 race massacre in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said. “When we have finished our federal review, we will issue a report analyzing the massacre in light of both modern and then-existing civil rights law,” said Clarke, who oversees the Justice Department’s civil rights enforcement efforts. The review will be conducted under the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act, which allows the Department of Justice to investigate death-resulting civil rights crimes that occurred on or before Dec. 31, 1979.
