During the eight years that Juan Orlando Hernández was president of Honduras, the tiny country was a conduit for hundreds of tons of cocaine that flowed north into the United States. Mr. Hernández’s political fortunes were tied to the gangs that transported those drugs, according to federal prosecutors in Manhattan. The traffickers fueled his rise, subsidizing Mr. Hernández’s campaigns in return for promises of protection, even as the two-term president presented himself as a U.S. ally in the war against drugs, prosecutors said. Now Mr. Hernández will spend 45 years in prison. Judge P. Kevin Castel called Mr. Hernández “a two-faced politician hungry for power” who had masqueraded as an antidrug crusader while partnering with traffickers.

CNN —Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has been sentenced to 45 years in prison and given an $8 million fine by a US judge for drug trafficking offenses. He has previously denied the charges against him and at his sentencing on Wednesday insisted that he is innocent and was “wrongly and unjustly accused.”In March, a jury in New York found Hernandez guilty on three drug trafficking charges after a two-week trial in Manhattan federal court. He was extradited from Honduras after the US Department of Justice filed three drug-trafficking and firearms related charges against him in 2022. In exchange, prosecutors said, Hernández received millions of dollars in bribes that he used to fuel his rise in Honduran politics. Hernández was president of Honduras from 2014 until 2022.

Microsoft took the pre-emptive step to unbundle Teams from Microsoft 365 in an effort to quash antitrust concerns by the EU. The EU opened its investigation into Microsoft — which remains ongoing — in July 2023 following a complaint by Salesforce -owned Slack, which has a rival chat service to Teams. A New York judge on Tuesday lifted parts of a gag order imposed on former President Donald Trump in his criminal hush money case, but kept some restrictions in place until Trump is sentenced. While he lifted that piece of the gag order, the judge ruled that a prohibition on disclosing juror information will remain in effect until further notice. Trump raged against the gag order when it was first imposed on March 26, about three weeks before the trial began. Trump violated the gag order 10 times during the historic trial. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung in a statement Tuesday criticized Merchan for declining to lift the entire gag order.
