The Texas Secretary of State's Office has told the state’s most populous county that it will send inspectors there to observe vote counting during the November election. Harris County is home to Houston and leans Democratic. In a statement to NBC News, the Secretary of State's Office said it sends inspectors to many counties during state elections, including Harris County, citing Chapter 34 of the Texas Election Code. NBC News reached out to Tatum, the Harris County election administrator, for comment. The secretary of state’s office announced hours later that it had begun reviews in Dallas and Harris counties, the two largest Democratic counties, and Tarrant and Collin counties, the two largest Republican ones.

A report found high levels of radioactive contamination at an elementary school in Missouri. Jana Elementary school is located near a creek that was contaminated in the 1940s and '50s. The report found radioactive contamination inside and outside the school building. Samples of soil, dust, and plant materials at the Jana Elementary School in the town of Florissant were collected in August for testing. Boston Chemical's investigation found several types of radioactive contamination were present at levels that far exceeded their expectations or acceptable levels.

(AP) — There is significant radioactive contamination at an elementary school in suburban St. Louis where nuclear weapons were produced during World War II, according to a new report by environmental investigation consultants. The report by Boston Chemical Data Corp. confirmed fears about contamination at Jana Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District in Florissant raised by a previous Army Corps of Engineers study. The new report is based on samples taken in August from the school, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The waste was dumped at sites near the St. Louis Lambert International Airport, next to the creek that flows to the Missouri River. Dust samples taken inside the school were found to be contaminated.

The proposed 500 megawatt (MW) battery project will be built in the central west region of Australia's New South Wales (NSW) state, Singapore-based renewable energy firm AMPYR said. "(This) will be one of the largest battery storage projects in NSW, contributing to the reliability of the national electricity market and further advancing Australia's clean energy future," AMPYR Director Ben Salmon said. The environmental impact statement of the battery energy storage system project is expected to be released for public consultation later this month. Battery energy storage is essential for preventing blackouts — amid coal-fired plants being retired in Australia — as it can absorb energy during the day when prices are cheap and release the energy when wind and solar power are not available, typically when prices are higher.
