The Pan American Health Organization has issued an epidemiological alert as Latin America experiences a rise in cases of the Oropouche virus, a little-known disease spread by midges and mosquitoes. At least 8,078 confirmed Oropouche cases, including two fatal cases, have been reported in the Americas. That’s 90% of all confirmed Oropouche cases in the Americas and a significant jump from the 832 cases Brazil reported last year. Brazilian health officials who were conducting a study on four newborns with microcephaly found the babies already had antibodies against Oropouche virus. Oropouche virus symptoms are similar to those of dengue, according to the CDC.

A federal U.S. judge ruled Monday that Google has illegally held a monopoly in two market areas: search and text advertising. The landmark case from the government, filed in 2020, alleged that Google has kept its share of the general search market by creating strong barriers to entry and a feedback loop that sustained its dominance. It may be even harder now that cracks are forming in the labor market. The jobs report was not a disaster, by any stretch, and it’s no guarantee of a looming recession. But it was a surprise, and economists expressed concerns about how quickly the labor market appears to have downshifted. For Wall Street, the surprise slowdown was the bitter cherry on top of a sundae of disappointing tech earnings. (In other words, Wall Street may have overreacted because, well, that’s just kinda the way Wall Street does things.)

☆ Pentagon Hands Over Last Base in Niger as Extremism Spreads in the Sahel

The U.S. military turned over control of its last base in Niger to local forces on Monday, ending a yearslong counterterrorism mission in the West African country even as violent extremism remains on the rise in the region. A group of U.S. troops boarded an Air Force cargo plane and flew out of a $110 million air base in central Niger that was built with Pentagon money, among the last of 1,000 personnel that Washington had agreed to pull out by Sept. 15. A small number of troops will remain at the United States Embassy for a short time to wrap up administrative details, officials said. “The withdrawal of U.S. forces and assets from Air Base 201 in Agadez is complete,” the Pentagon’s Africa Command said in a statement, referring to the installation in central Niger. “The effective cooperation and communication between the U.S. and Nigerien armed forces ensured that this turnover was finished ahead of schedule and without complications.”

Here is what we know as the country enters a new week of uncertainty. Protesters over the weekend took to the streets of a dozen cities across the United Kingdom, most of them in England. In some cases, the protesters were merely unruly, but in others the violence was far more pronounced. It remained unclear whether asylum seekers were still staying at the hotel and no guests were injured in the melee, police said.
