The United States is experiencing yet another divisive campaign season, but there may be a place where Americans can find calm and camaraderie: a vice presidential debate. "Saturday Night Live" followed up a historic, Season 50 premiere with more satire as Tuesday's debate between nominees for vice president, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, and Democratic Gov. The "SNL" recreation had repertory player Heidi Gardner playing CBS News' Norah O'Donnell, who introduced the running mates. Walz, played by comedian Jim Gaffigan, is a former teacher and high school football coach tapped by Vice President Kamala Harris (Maya Rudoph) as her Democratic running mate. Vance (Bowen Yang) was asked by debate cohost Margaret Brennan (Chloe Fineman) how he'd address the crisis in the Middle East.

Bestselling author and leadership expert Simon Sinek recommends asking one simple question to help people trust you: Can you help me out? Think about the last time a friend of yours needed advice or guidance, but never asked you for it. Trust is built when a person still makes an effort to ask for help, even when they don't want to, Sinek said. Monthly Social Security checks aren't enough for most baby boomers to get by, further fueling a retirement crisis. A prenuptial agreement can be helpful, but it typically doesn't protect wealth built after the couple ties the knot, like retirement savings. Men's monthly retirement incomes are nearly $600 more than women's — $2,610 to $2,042 — and they're more likely to have a balance in a retirement account. Overall, divorced women like Clark see lower monthly retirement incomes than their male counterparts — and peers who have remarried. One of Mintzer's greatest divorce regrets is that she didn't safeguard her retirement savings.

It's important to do your homework before taking them, the director of the Office of Dietary Supplements said. It's no surprise, then, that the US dietary supplement market had an estimated value of $45.1 billion in 2023, according to Statista. Hong Kong CNN —Glance up while strolling through parts of downtown Hong Kong and, chances are, you’ll notice the glassy black lens of a surveillance camera trained on the city’s crowded streets. Hong Kong police had previously set a target of installing 2,000 new surveillance cameras this year, and potentially more than that each subsequent year. Facial recognition gates at the departure hall of Hong Kong International Airport. Tang and the Hong Kong police have repeatedly pointed to other jurisdictions, including Western democracies, that also make wide use of surveillance cameras for law enforcement. Protesters on the streets covered their faces with masks and goggles to prevent identification, at times smashing or covering security cameras.

“Did the Fed even need to cut rates in September, let alone cut by 50bps (basis points)?” Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, wrote in a note on Friday. Second-guessing the Fed isn’t new, of course. Central bank officials themselves note the uncertainty inherent in their work, especially when the economy reaches inflection points. Even Fed officials don’t always agree with the central bank’s actions, such as Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, the lone dissenter to the Fed’s decision to cut rates by half a point in September. ‘This isn’t exact science’Fed officials aren’t shy about admitting that they don’t always have confidence in how the US economy will evolve.

Elon Musk is joining Donald Trump for a rally in Pennsylvania. Musk has become one of Trump's most prominent supporters. As president-elect in late 2016, Trump announced Musk would join his economic advisory board, but Musk would later cut ties with the administration over disagreements on climate change policies. At a Trump rally, Trump called Musk a "bullshit artist," after which Musk suggested Trump should not run for president again. Trump retaliated, saying Musk would be "worthless" without government subsidies and that Trump previously could have made Musk beg on his knees for government support.

A black bear was hit by a car and killed on a Tennessee highway after it found a delicious snack on the side of the road while it was bulking up for winter, officials with the Appalachian Bear Rescue said on Facebook. The rescue group, or ABR, said it received a report of an adult black bear that had been struck and killed on Highway 321 coming into Townsend, Tennessee, on Tuesday. While inspecting the bear's remains, they then saw what drew the bear to the busy highway in the first place — a platter of pancakes. "With fall hyperphagia in full swing, the male bear probably saw the pancakes as an easy, high caloric meal." The agency reminded residents to live responsibly in the area, where black bears are common.

Heavy rains from Hurricane Helene caused flooding across western North Carolina, like here in Asheville. Melissa Sue Gerrits/Getty ImagesBut only about 2.6% of the 4.3 million properties across the state — or around 115,000 properties — had flood insurance as of June 2024, according to private provider Neptune Flood Insurance, which analyzed data from the government-backed National Flood Insurance Program. North Carolina Department of Insurance communications director Jason Tyson estimated that about 139,000 properties in the state have flood insurance through the NFIP. Part of the problem with flood insurance is a common misconception that regular home insurance covers flooding, which is rarely the case, four experts knowledgable about flood insurance and disaster management told Business Insider. "We don't think of western North Carolina and the Appalachian mountains as an area that has significant flood risk."

With homes becoming increasingly unaffordable, more buyers are using an increasingly popular strategy to lower their mortgage rate. Buying points — also referred to as "discount points" or "buying down the rate" — involves paying extra to your lender at closing to reduce the interest rate on a mortgage. That reduced rate results in smaller monthly payments and long-term interest savings over the life of the loan. A larger down payment reduces the total loan amount, which also has the effect of lowering monthly payments. Ultimately, whether a larger down payment or buying points will actually lower your monthly payments depends on your specific loan terms.

Job seekers who are patient can learn something about their prospective employer, an exec told BI. But lately, the slogging has grown more intense as some employers tack interview after interview onto the hiring process. It can be maddening for job seekers forced to sit through rounds of interviews that might stretch into the double digits. That means some employers put job seekers through more rounds than an NFL draft. Having a boatload of interviews gives job seekers more chances to determine whether an employer is a good fit for them.

Liverpool, ENGLAND — British defense officials are vying to secure more funding as Finance Minister Rachel Reeves' upcoming Autumn budget risks exacerbating already beleaguered efforts to boost military investment. Maria Eagle, the U.K.'s minister of defense procurement, joined a chorus of voices that called on the sector to prove that it could be more efficient under the new government, as the Treasury grapples with allocating its stretched finances. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine has cast a spotlight on deep inefficiencies within Britain's defense sectors, provoking calls for reform. A 72-page House of Lords report published Thursday last week warned of "burdensome bureaucracy" in military recruitment and "cumbersome" procurement processes. Unless "laser-sharp priorities" are set, even 2.5% might not be enough to meet the country's defense needs, it said, adding that the government must acknowledge the essential need for higher defense spending and communicate that to the public.
