Apple announced a new iPhone feature Monday called StandBy that will roll out with iOS17 this fall. StandBy basically transforms your iPhone into a horizontal smart display when your phone is charging. You will also be able to play music and use Siri when your phone is in StandBy mode. The biggest iPhone is the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which has a display size of 6.7 inches. While it's too soon to know whether the new iPhone feature will have an impact on sales of Amazon's Echo Show, it's clear the device certainly has some new competition.

CNN —Next week, Apple may unveil its most ambitious new hardware product in years, but it’s in a product category that is anything but a proven winner. The highly-anticipated release of an AR/VR headset would be Apple’s biggest hardware product launch since the debut of the Apple Watch in 2015. “So it is great timing for that market.”An uncertain marketFor now, the overall headset market remains small. There were 8.8 million AR/VR headsets shipped globally last year, according to data from market research firm IDC. Unlike almost any other company, however, Apple can create demand for an experimental new product or category.

Nvidia stock has soared 165% in 2023 as investors wake up to the potential of artificial intelligence. Nvidia appears best positioned for AI growth as companies rely on its high-tech GPUs to power chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard. The stock is up 165% so far in 2023, and some analysts think there's still plenty of room for growth. "They have the entire AI silicon stack. They own over 95% of market share of the GPU market within the data center space," Zino said.
Microsoft said Tuesday that it will offer Bing as the default search engine in OpenAI's viral ChatGPT chatbot. "ChatGPT will now have a world-class search engine built-in to provide timelier and more up-to-date answers with access from the web," Mehdi wrote. "Now, ChatGPT answers can be grounded by search and web data and include citations so you can learn more — all directly from within chat." Microsoft is trying to expand the use of Bing, which has for years struggled to gain market share from Google. Microsoft said developers will be able to build plugins that work in ChatGPT, Bing and its Copilot chatbot coming to Microsoft 365 apps such as Word and Excel.
The app quickly rocketed up to the top of the iOS App Store charts. Last week, OpenAI launched an iPhone app for ChatGPT that quickly shot to the top of the App Store. And yet, it will likely make hundreds of millions of dollars a year from this technology, while basically doing nothing. None of that is stopping Apple from offering the service to users through its App Store and reaping a profit on subscription sales. OpenAI is not doing that, perhaps because the process is a bit more clunky than using Apple's built-in payment processor.
Apple restricts use of OpenAI's ChatGPT for employees -WSJ

May 18 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has restricted the use of ChatGPT and other external artificial intelligence tools for its employees as Apple develops similar technology, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing a document and sources. Last month, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, said it had introduced an "incognito mode" for ChatGPT that does not save users’ conversation history or use it to improve its artificial intelligence. Scrutiny has been growing over how ChatGPT and other chatbots it inspired manage hundreds of millions of users’ data, commonly used to improve, or "train," AI. Earlier Thursday, OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT app for Apple's iOS in the United States. Apple, OpenAI and Microsoft did not respond to Reuters request for comment.
Hong Kong CNN —Apple launched an online store in Vietnam this week, in another nod to the growing importance of emerging markets for the iPhone maker. Markets like Vietnam, India and Indonesia are becoming more important for Apple as its growth in developed markets, including China, slows down, prompting the company to focus on places where it’s traditionally been less active. “Clearly, growth has slowed globally and thus put more pressure [on Apple] to aggressively go after emerging markets,” said Daniel Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities. This has “been the core part of its success in China that now can be replicated in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, among others,” said Ives. And while consumers are becoming more affluent, the company’s price points are still considered high in many emerging markets, noted Ives.

May 18 (Reuters) - OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot, said on Thursday it is introducing the ChatGPT app for Apple's iOS. The ChatGPT app is free to use and would sync history across devices, OpenAI said. "ChatGPT Plus subscribers get exclusive access to GPT-4's capabilities, early access to features and faster response times, all on iOS," the company added. GPT-4 is a powerful artificial intelligence model that succeeds the technology behind the wildly popular ChatGPT. Earlier in February, OpenAI launched a pilot subscription plan for its popular AI-powered chatbot, called ChatGPT Plus, for $20 per month.

OpenAI launched a ChatGPT iPhone app on Thursday, its CTO Mira Murati said on Twitter. In screenshots on Apple's App Store, OpenAI says that the app can answer questions such as, "what are unique custom birthday gifts ideas for my coffee-loving mom" or how to politely decline an invite to a concert. ChatGPT was previously available online on OpenAI's website, as well as through an application interface used to build third-party apps. Apple's App Store has previously hosted several apps that use OpenAI's software, but none were from OpenAI itself. The app is free, although it includes a $20 per month in-app purchase through Apple for ChatGPT Plus, OpenAI's subscription that offers additional features.

OpenAI launches a free ChatGPT app for iOS
  + stars: | 2023-05-18 | by ( Jennifer Korn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
OpenAI on Thursday announced the launch of a free ChatGPT app for iOS users in the United States, with plans to roll out to other countries soon. The launch comes six months after OpenAI first released ChatGPT online to the public. The new ChatGPT app has the same capabilities as the web version of the viral chatbot tool, and could help build on its popularity. With the app, users will also be able to send voice prompts through their phone’s microphone, rather than just typing them. OpenAI plans to launch an Android version next, according to the company’s CTO Mira Murati.
CNN —Apple on Tuesday announced a series of new accessibility tools for the iPhone and iPad, including a feature that promises to replicate a user’s voice for phone calls after only 15 minutes of training. With an upcoming tool called Personal Voice, users will be able to read text prompts to record audio and have the technology learn their voice. A related feature called Live Speech will then use the “synthesized voice” to read the user’s typed text aloud during phone calls, FaceTime conversations and in-person conversations. In the blog post, Apple said the Personal Voice feature uses “on-device machine learning to keep users’ information private and secure.”Other tech companies have experimented with using AI to replicate a voice. In addition to the voice features, Apple announced Assistive Access, which combines some of the most popular iOS apps, such as FaceTime, Messages, Camera, Photos, Music and Phone, into one Calls app.
Ahead of its June WWDC event, Apple on Tuesday previewed a suite of accessibility features that will be coming "later this year" in its next big iPhone update. The new "Personal Voice" feature, expected as part of iOS 17, will let iPhones and iPads generate digital reproductions of a user's voice for in-person conversations and on phone, FaceTime and audio calls. Apple said Personal Voice will create a synthesized voice that sounds like a user and can be used to connect with family and friends. The feature is aimed at users who have conditions that can affect their speaking ability over time.
Microsoft announced Monday that the latest version of Phone Link for Windows 11 PCs can receive notifications, send texts and answer calls from a user's paired iPhone. Most Americans use iPhones, and Apple's integration across its products has helped its Mac business take market share from Windows PCs in recent years. It works through Bluetooth, according to The Verge, and requires the iPhone to have Microsoft's "Link to Windows" app installed. A Phone Link-enabled Windows PC gets notifications from the user's iPhone and shows the messages in Windows. It doesn't support group texts through iMessage and doesn't allow users to send photos or videos, either.
But when it comes to artificial intelligence, particularly Siri, Apple has gone from leader to laggard. Siri was introduced to the world in 2011 – 12 years ago – and was lauded at the time as a breakthrough in AI technology. Open-source technology allows developers to collaborate and contribute to a project, leading to faster and more efficient development cycles. Still, Google, which has a long history of open-source involvement, publishes hundreds of AI research papers yearly. While that's helpful (especially for selling Macs to AI developers), it's not the kind of kumbaya sharing that the open-source community relies on.
