New York CNN —Advance Auto Parts is closing more than 700 locations to shore up the company’s finances following another dismal earnings report. The car parts retailer, which has about 5,000 stores, said Thursday that the closures are part of its “strategic plan to improve business performance.” Advance Auto Parts (AAP) shares slid nearly 5% in premarket trading after it reported earnings that missed analysts’ expectations. The reduction will result in closing roughly 500 corporate-owned stores plus about 200 independently operated locations. The company did not immediately provide a full list of locations set to close. It recently sold Worldpac, an automotive parts wholesaler, for $1.5 billion as part of “simplification” of its business model.

CNN —David Knezevich, the South Florida businessman accused in the February disappearance of his estranged wife in Spain, is now charged with her murder. A federal grand jury in Miami indicted Knezevich, 36, Wednesday on charges of kidnapping resulting in death, foreign domestic violence resulting in death, and foreign murder of a US national. If convicted of the newest charges, Knezevich could face the death penalty. CNN —As he stood inside the echoing hall of the prison, Matt Gaetz seemed impressed. It was July, and Gaetz — who will oversee the Federal Bureau of Prisons if he becomes attorney general — was visiting El Salvador’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), where gang leaders and murderers are locked up and from which they are never released. “This is the solution” for El Salvador, Gaetz added, in a video released by Bukele. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he “absolutely” wants to see the House Ethics Committee’s findings on Gaetz. “I think there should not be any limitations on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s investigation, including whatever the House Ethics Committee has generated,” he said. Trump has pushed to keep all options on the table to greenlight his nominees, including recess appointments, which would bypass the typical Senate confirmation process. However, Sen. Rick Scott told CNN, “I believe in recess appointments.” Scott had supported recess appointments during his bid for GOP leader, which he lost to Thune. The Supreme Court has ruled on questions about recess appointments, which makes the outcome of taking these questions to court uncertain.

Pennsylvania’s Senate race is heading to a recount, which the narrow margin between Republican Dave McCormick and Democratic Sen. Bob Casey triggered automatically under state law. Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt announced Wednesday that the unofficial results showing a narrow race have led to a recount. Any margin under 0.5 percentage points triggers a recount in Pennsylvania. But the current vote count shows a sizable drop-off between Trump and McCormick, with Trump winning more than 100,000 more votes than McCormick. NBC News projected that Democratic Senate candidates in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin won their races even as Trump carried the states.

The number of illnesses in the E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has risen to 104, up from 90 at last count, health officials said in an update Wednesday. The outbreak was announced last month, though some cases date to September, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC and McDonald's have both pointed to slivered onions served on Quarter Pounders as the likely source of the outbreak. In the last week, McDonald’s has resumed selling Quarter Pounders with slivered onions at the affected locations, relying on a different supplier for the onions. Several lawsuits have been filed against McDonald’s since the outbreak was announced, including a proposed class action.

House Republicans’ razor-thin victory was propelled by Trump’s decisive win over Vice President Kamala Harris in both the Electoral College and the popular vote. So far, Republicans have captured the 218 seats needed to secure the majority to Democrats’ 208 seats. Last week, Republicans flipped three Democratic Senate seats to win control of the upper chamber. They were among the 18 GOP House districts that President Joe Biden carried in 2020. Democratic challenger George Whitesides also ousted vulnerable GOP Rep. Mike Garcia in Southern California.

WASHINGTON — Over the last two years, a narrow Republican House majority has fought bitterly over everything from electing a speaker, keeping the government functioning and even passing symbolic messaging bills. Now, Republicans have clinched at least 218 seats to win a House majority, NBC News projects, but it’ll be another small one. “The House has always been a chaotic place, will always be a chaotic place. And here in the Senate, obviously, we continue to have a number of tools to exercise.”There is precedent for a narrow House majority delivering major legislation. ‘Trump is so volatile’Rep. WASHINGTON — Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., plans to file a resolution in the House on Thursday that would express support for the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution, which sets the term limits for the president. However, he could introduce it as a privileged resolution to force Republicans to vote on the matter. The resolution, which NBC News obtained Wednesday, reaffirms that the 22nd Amendment "applies to two terms in the aggregate as President of the United States" and reaffirms that it "applies to President-elect Trump." The resolution lists a number of instances in which Trump has joked or floated the idea of serving longer than two terms in the White House or being a dictator. To amend the Constitution and modify term limits for president, both the House and the Senate would need to approve amendment language by two-thirds votes.

The blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy may help people cut back on drinking, new research published Wednesday in JAMA Psychiatry suggests. Just over 28 million adults in the U.S. have alcohol addiction, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Several other studies have examined drinking habits among people taking GLP-1 drugs who do not have alcohol use disorder. Around 75,000 people in the study used some type of medication to treat alcohol use disorder. So far, the clearest results have come from studies on alcohol addiction — but there is still a lot to understand.
