I quickly realized that these small costs — eating out, gas station snacks, souvenirs — are where van life can get expensive. I'm not saying van life is necessarily cheaper than city living, but I am convinced it can be if I work at it.

Einride plans to open many EV charging stations for freight trucking on the West and East coasts, though California is the only state in which there are any EV freight charging stations of scale today. Voltera, which develops, owns and operates EV infrastructure, said the site was permitted, built, electrified and operational in under 18 months. "In the world of charging infrastructure, that's pretty remarkable," its CEO Matt Horton said in a statement. One of the first EV charging stations of scale for freight trucks is opening near the major ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, as the trucking market takes some limited, but significant steps to build the infrastructure required for a long-term transition to EV trucking and net-zero shipping. Additional EV charging projects at ports in New York and New Jersey, as well as the Pacific Northwest, are planned.

Dollar General is sharply reducing the selection of products it sells in order to cut costs. The discounter previously stocked about 12,000 unique items, referenced by SKUs. AdvertisementSome Dollar General shoppers may see their favorite items disappearing from shelves as the discount retailer looks to control inventory costs. The move inches Dollar General closer to Costco's time-tested strategy for finding savings through simplicity — the wholesale club famously keeps its SKU count to around 4,000 in its warehouses. Last summer, Dollar General took a $95 million inventory write-down as it cleaned those stores up.

Earlier this month, the adtech firm Kevel announced that it had raised $23 million in a Series C round of funding to help retailers set up and run advertising businesses. Fourteen-year-old Kevel, formerly known as Adzerk, sells software that brands, including Klarna and Delivery Hero, pay a monthly fee for to manage advertising businesses on e-commerce websites. Kevel's products help retailers sell search ads on e-commerce websites, provide an ad server to manage and place ads, and give access to an audience tool that collects retailers' first-party data. Kevel competes with a growing number of adtech firms that help retailers stand up ad businesses, like Criteo, Epsilon, and Microsoft. Kevel doesn't sell ads, which Avery said the firm benefits from as more retailers like Target's Roundel take their ad businesses in-house.

A toxicology report later showed that Chao had a blood-alcohol concentration of .233, the Blanco County Sheriff's Office said in its report. Chao drowned after friends and rescue workers tried without success to get the 50-year-old shipping executive out of the submerged vehicle. "Chao, who is still on the phone with Keinan, tells Keinan in a [calm] voice her feet are under water," the report said. "Chao told Keinan the water was rising and she was going to die, and said, 'I love you' to Keinan prior to the vehicle going under water." Both deputies entered the pond and tried repeatedly to locate Chao through the back door, "but were unable to," the report said.

As investors deliberate what's next for the artificial intelligence trade, Goldman Sachs has some long-term winners that can come out on top. But, for the moment, it has bolstered only a handful of companies in what Goldman Sachs is calling the first phase of the AI trade. However, Goldman Sachs said the productivity gains to be had from AI would boost earnings per share for the company by roughly 39%. “Is this what America’s retirement system has come to?” she asks. “Are we heading for a TikTok pension system?”Ghilarducci argues that working longer is not the solution to America’s retirement crisis, in which millions of people don’t have enough money for a comfortable old age. The most important fix, she says, is to shore up Social Security and complement it with a new automatic-enrollment pension plan for workers who lack access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan. I’ve been arguing that working longer kind of is the solution for the retirement crisis, or at least part of the solution. “Yes, Granny deserves a good job if she wants one,” she writes, “but working until you drop is not a civilized plan for a civilized society.”

But critics of Family Dollar and other dollar store chains’ business practices like Hall-Harper say the closures highlight the risks of communities relying too heavily on dollar store chains. Hall-Harper has led Tulsa’s effort to restrict the growth of the three major dollar store chains — Family Dollar, Dollar Tree and Dollar General — in the predominately Black area of North Tulsa. Dollar General said it regularly hears from communities and customers asking it to bring a Dollar General store to their hometown. Who will buy TikTok from ByteDance?
  + stars: | 2024-03-14 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
At $100 billion, there are few companies that could afford to buy TikTok outright. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal wrote that Kotick “floated the idea of partnering to buy TikTok to a table of people that included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.”CNN couldn’t independently confirm the report. Its one go at the social media scene, the buggy and short-lived Ping, was one of Apple’s biggest flops. And any tech executive or private equity investor thinking of buying TikTok would need to be prepared to enter the social media quagmire. A key question in assessing the value of a TikTok deal is whether China would allow ByteDance to export its algorithm — the secret sauce that keeps TikTok users glued to their phones.

Dollar General forecast annual sales above Wall Street estimates on Thursday, banking on more inflation-affected customers buying its cheaper groceries and essentials and sending its shares surging more than 6% premarket. With consumers preferring to cook more meals at home amid higher prices and borrowing costs, Dollar General has seen more shoppers visiting its outlets to browse for lower-margin, needs-based goods, over pricier general merchandise. The retailer also posted holiday-quarter net sales of $9.86 billion for the fourth quarter, above analysts' average estimate of $9.78 billion. However, like rival Dollar Tree , Dollar General also projected annual profit below estimates, underscoring margin pressures from higher costs linked to its supply chain, labor and raw materials. It expects 2024 profit between $6.80 and $7.55 per share, compared with an estimate of $7.55 per share.

Facial recognition frequently misidentifies people of colorMIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini found that facial recognition technology misidentified black women up to 35% of the time, the New York Times reported in 2018. When fewer photos of people from other racial and gender groups are used, facial recognition tech is less accurate at identifying people of those backgrounds, the study said. In some cases, it's possible to opt out of using facial recognition technology — and its high error rate. But sidestepping facial recognition often isn't possible, said Gideon Christian, a law professor at the University of Calgary who has written about the legal and societal aspects of facial recognition technology. “It’s a challenging consumer environment,” said Ian Borden, McDonald’s CFO, noting that many consumers are trying to manage inflation, higher interest rates and dwindling savings. That includes their spending on food at restaurants such as McDonald’s, fast-food restaurants that historically prize value and affordability as core business values. According to February inflation data in the Consumer Price Index, food at home prices grew 1% year over year, while restaurant prices rose 4.5% over the last year. But the current surge in restaurant prices has flipped the script from a year ago, when it was cheaper to dine out. At that time, restaurant prices were up 8.4% and grocery prices were up 10.2% year over year.
