LONDON, April 28 (Reuters) - (Please note obscene language in penultimate three paragraphs)Hollywood actress Eva Green on Friday won a legal fight with financiers whom she had sued in London's High Court for her fee for a failed film in which she was to star. Judge Michael Green said in a written ruling that Eva Green was entitled to payment of the $1 million fee. Green, 42, appeared in court in January to say she had become concerned the film's production team had been cutting corners, citing how her stunt training had been reduced from four weeks to five days. White Lantern's lawyers said Green, also an executive producer on the project, had made unreasonable demands about crew, locations and equipment. "I fought tooth and nail to defend the beautiful film that I loved and had signed on for," Green said in a statement.

Big rigs, local delivery and government fleets must transition to zero emission by 2035, garbage trucks and local buses by 2039, and sleeper cab tractors and specialty vehicles by 2042. American Trucking Associations Chief Executive Chris Spear criticized the decision to force motor carriers to purchase zero-emission vehicles. On Thursday, CARB adopted new locomotive regulations requiring that by 2030 only those less than 23 years old could operate in the state. The Biden administration must still approve waivers for California to implement the new regulations.

Les Arts Florissants Returns to New York, Endangered

The pair of concerts that William Christie and his ensemble, Les Arts Florissants, offered at Carnegie Hall this week made me a little sad. What depressed me was the question of whether there’s a future in New York for this pathbreaking early-music group, founded in France four decades ago by Christie, an American. Its longtime bases when on tour in the city, Lincoln Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, have jolted away from the kind of music programming that was until recently a core part of their identities — and the kind that Les Arts Florissants embodies. Sure, Christie and Les Arts Florissants don’t do contemporary pieces. Their repertoire, with its founding specialty in the French Baroque of Lully, Rameau and Charpentier, doesn’t check fashionable boxes of diversity, equity and inclusion.
One standout piece, the “Briolette of India,” includes a 90-carat diamond and carries a high estimate of $7.8 million. They are among the 700 jewels from the estate of an Austrian heiress that will go on sale at Christie’s on May 3 as part of one of the largest jewelry sales in history. The proceeds are to benefit a charitable foundation established by Horten, whose husband, Helmut, was a German retailing billionaire whose specialty was department stores. “It’s one of the most beautifully curated collections that will ever come up in the jewelry world,” said Anthea Peers, president of Christie’s Europe, Middle East and Africa. That’s important for the estate and for us.”
In the mid-1950s, when Jane Davis Doggett was earning a master’s degree at Yale’s Graduate School of Art and Architecture, she was surrounded by students and professors who were focused on the arenas, malls, medical centers, transit hubs and other huge projects that were coming to define America’s postwar era of prosperity and urban renewal. Ms. Doggett had a different interest. “Projects were new, complicated and big,” she recalled in a 2013 interview with the designer Tracy Turner posted on the website of the Society for Experiential Graphic Design. “It occurred to me to think about the person coming to these behemoths and what the human scale should be and how this person would find his way and make use of the place.”The field she began working in didn’t really have a name at the time but is now called environmental graphic design. She became one of its founding figures, coming up with systems to help people navigate complex spaces, a specialty called “wayfinding.”Airports were a calling: In Miami, Houston, Baltimore and several dozen other cities, Ms. Doggett used color coding, symbols, uniform signage and other touches to help travelers find their way around airports that would have otherwise been more intimidating.

The company expects to add five or six health systems to Risant in that time. The formation of the company is also a response to the rapid changes taking place in the health care industry. Large for-profit companies like health insurers, pharmacy chains and other corporations are scooping up physician practices and urgent care centers and devouring more of the country’s health care dollars. As national systems and new players grow larger, “they are pulling away in some respects from our communities and from our community health systems,” he said. “Covid has really shown not having integrated, value-based relationships puts our health systems and our communities at risk,” Mr. Adams said.
Counter-drone training has also become common throughout the Russian military. Having used drones and seen drones used with increasing frequency, the Russian military has also expanded its counter-drone training. The threat is now considered so widespread that most Russian troops, regardless of military specialty, are getting instruction in spotting and dealing with drones. Ukraine's military has been bolstering its drone defenses throughout the war, as shown in the Western military aid being sent to Kyiv. Despite having kinetic and electronic-warfare countermeasures to take out Russian drones, Ukraine still faces a difficult challenge.
April 25 (Reuters) - Specialty glass maker Corning Inc (GLW.N) beat profit estimates for the first quarter on Tuesday as price hikes more than made up for higher raw material costs and a demand slowdown. Corning's core sales fell 10% to $3.37 billion in the first quarter, but they were better than estimates of $3.34 billion. Revenue from its optical communications division fell 6% during the quarter, while sales in specialty materials business, which makes Gorilla glass, declined 18%. Corning said it expects net sales between $3.4 billion and $3.6 billion for the second quarter, compared with analysts' estimate of $3.58 billion. April 23 - Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (BBBY.O) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday after the home goods retailer failed to secure funds to stay afloat, and has begun a liquidation sale. In February, the embattled retailer had planned to raise around $1 billion through the offering of preferred stock and warrants to avoid bankruptcy. But Bed Bath terminated the deal in late March and announced plans to sell $300 million worth of its shares, warning it might have to file for bankruptcy if it could not secure the funds. In February, according to a court filing, Bed Bath & Beyond's Canadian operations were going out of business. The Canadian division, which operates 54 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and 11 buybuy BABY stores, is insolvent, the filing posted on the website of consultancy Alvarez & Marsal showed.
CNN —America’s leading specialty baby products retailer will shutter its 120 stores, a consequence of parent company Bed Bath & Beyond’s bankruptcy filing on Sunday. “The buybuy BABY business is the one part of the operation that will probably attract interest from buyers,” Saunders said. Bed Bath & Beyond placed some hope in buybuy BABY while it struggled to survive. He joined Bed Bath & Beyond in 2019 from Target, where he was in charge of expanding its private label brands. In its bankruptcy filing, Bed Bath & Beyond said it had $5.2 billion in debt and assets of just $4.4 billion.

Bed Bath & Beyond came out of the 2008 downturn a winner. Competitors like Sharper Image and Linens ‘n Things filed for bankruptcy, but Bed Bath & Beyond actually expanded its business by acquiring other retailers. Now, as the U.S. economy experiences another period of uncertainty, Bed Bath & Beyond is no longer on top, the result of an increasingly unwieldy corporate structure and its failure to fully reckon with the ascendance of online shopping. The company’s 360 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and 120 Buy Buy Baby stores and websites will remain open. To help fund its operations in bankruptcy, Bed Bath & Beyond has raised $240 million from the investment firm Sixth Street Specialty Lending.

And Bed Bath & Beyond is the latest retail chain to file for bankruptcy this year.

Madrid CNN —A fire believed to have been started by a flambéed pizza has killed two people and injured 12 others at a restaurant in the Spanish capital Madrid, city officials said Saturday. “It appears the fire started when a flambéed pizza was being served, which set fire to the decorations in the restaurant,” Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez Almeida told Spain’s state television TVE at the scene on Saturday, hours after the late Friday night blaze. Spanish media reported that a specialty of the restaurant was a pizza in the flambé style - a cooking procedure where spirits are poured on the food and briefly set alight. That was in addition to the two fatalities, said Montse Marcos, a supervisor with the Madrid city ambulance services. The fire was in the Plaza de Manuel Becerra, on the edge of the Spanish capital’s upscale Salamanca neighborhood.
Data-hungry AI models could help Reddit valuation

Reddit’s data, as it benefits AI models, may be just the catalyst that it needs. Reddit plans to introduce a new revenue stream to supplement what it already earns from advertising. While Alphabet, say, won’t want to sell data to Microsoft, Reddit is going to be willing to create a competitive market. And on that basis, it would need to get just 40 customers to nearly double the $350 million revenue it made in 2021. It would take some mind-bending when Reddit tries sell shares to public investors.

April 19 (Reuters) - Property and casualty insurer Travelers Companies Inc (TRV.N) on Wednesday reported a fall in quarterly profit, hurt by severe wind and hail storms in parts of the United States in March. The storms pushed up the insurer's catastrophe losses net of reinsurance to $535 million from $160 million a year earlier. Two U.S. lenders crumbled after a flight of deposits spiraled out of control last month, sparking a global crisis that shook investor confidence in the banking industry and rattled markets. The turbulence has since subsided after intervention by regulators, but analysts have warned the banking industry will suffer long-term repercussions. Travelers' profit was helped by a 4% rise in net investment income to $663 million.
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. is moving forward with its plans to pull away from Main Street lending. The bank said Tuesday that it had sold part of the portfolio of Marcus personal loans and put the rest up for sale, even though it had to take a revenue hit to do so. It also said it would start the process to explore the sale of GreenSky, a specialty lender that it bought about a year ago.
