Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a rally in Doral, Florida, on July 9, 2024. Various Trump megadonors are also on the RNC lineup including venture capitalist David Sacks and investors Steve and Zach Witkoff. In total, the RNC will have over 80 speakers rallying support around Trump before the convention culminates in officially designating him the Republican presidential nominee. Notably missing from the RNC speaker list is former First Lady Melania Trump, as well as Trump's daughter and former White House advisor Ivanka Trump. Melania has so far been conspicuously absent from the Trump campaign trail, drawing mockery from President Joe Biden.

Read previewSince joining the upper chamber last year, Sen. John Fetterman has been one of President Joe Biden's strongest political allies. But so far, many Senate Democrats appear highly skeptical of Biden's chances in November, despite only one Democratic senator publicly calling on the President to forgo his reelection bid. Advertisement"You have legacies, too," Fetterman told the senators who were present in the room, according to the outlet. "I refuse to join the Democratic vultures on Biden's shoulder after the debate," the senator wrote on X after the June debate. During a June appearance on "Fox News Sunday," Fetterman compared his campaign situation with that of the president.

Most people don’t use mail the way they used to – if they send out mail at all. And, most of all, businesses still depend on the mail to help them reach customers and keep the economy going. A history older than AmericaThe postal service and the United States have grown side by side since before the country’s birth – quite literally. And yet one of the men, former President Donald Trump, 78, has been able to remake the Republican Party around his own divisive persona. Trump, between now and then, will pick a vice president from a short list of people who have previously criticized him but are now all in. Doug Burgum, who are also reportedly on Trump’s vice presidential short list, should be wary. A CNN poll released back in February, before Trump had sealed the Republican presidential nomination, suggested his top Republican rival, former South Carolina Gov. If Biden dropped out, Clyburn said he would back Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I totally transformed the federal judiciary,” Trump boasted at a summit hosted by the right-wing Moms for Liberty group last summer. “Many presidents never get the opportunity to appoint a Supreme Court justice. But as Trump drives toward a potential second term, one thing is clear: He’s just getting started. Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi have spoken privately about Joe Biden and the future of his 2024 campaign. Both the former president and ex-speaker expressed concerns about how much harder they think it’s become for the president to beat Donald Trump. Democrats are desperate for the dispiriting infighting to end so they can get back to trying to beat the former president. Pelosi has made clear that she does not see Biden’s decision to stay in the race as final. But Obama’s deepening skepticism about his friend’s ability to win reelection is one of the worst kept secrets in Washington.

Ahead of those meetings, defections in Biden’s Democratic coalition in Congress continued. More than a dozen Democratic House members and at least one Democratic senator have publicly called on Biden to withdraw from his reelection campaign. Speaking with reporters on Friday, Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler acknowledged “anxiety” from Capitol Hill, but insisted Biden will continue outreach to lawmakers to shore up his support. Biden, for his part, came off as chastened during the news conference and was less defiant than in previous appearances. Biden’s campaign, meanwhile, has bluntly acknowledged the challenges it has faced since his debate performance two weeks ago.

President Biden on Friday faced escalating pressure from Democrats questioning his viability as a candidate, as rank-and-file lawmakers continued to call on him to end his re-election bid and the president resisted their entreaties, privately defending his decision to continue running. Their House leader made it clear directly to Mr. Biden that his members still harbored deep concerns over the president’s candidacy. And as he campaigned in the battleground state of Michigan, prominent Democrats — including the governor and both of the party’s senators — were not by his side. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, a stalwart Biden surrogate who has been on the road promoting her own book, was expected to be absent from an event he held in Detroit. Back in Washington, Representative Hakeem Jeffries, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, met one-on-one at the White House with Mr. Biden on Thursday night to discuss the deep concerns many of his members harbor about his ability to defeat Mr. Trump in November.

Mr. Biden stumbled early but remained defiant in the face of questions about his fitness to continue his campaign. Mr. Biden vowed to stay in the presidential race. “I just got to, just, pace myself a little more,” Mr. Biden said. Jerome Powell, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, during a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing in Washington, DC, US, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. Markets now firmly expect a September interest rate cut in the U.S., but the Federal Reserve has a strong reason to hold off, according to economist Carl Weinberg. Money market pricing for a rate cut at the Fed's fall meeting rose from around 70% to more than 90% on Thursday, according to LSEG data, after a softer-than-expected consumer price index print. Fed Chair Jerome Powell had already bolstered expectations of such a move when he said earlier this week that there were risks in keeping interest rates too high for too long — comments interpreted as "modestly dovish" by analysts. However, there are also risks to easing monetary policy that cast a cloud over the rate cut outlook, Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics, told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Friday.

CNN —The jury has begun deliberating in the federal corruption trial against Sen. Bob Menendez and his co-defendants. Menendez and his co-defendants, New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, are accused of participating in a yearslong bribery scheme. Prosecutors spent nearly seven weeks untangling the multiple corruption schemes that they allege Bob and Nadine Menendez and the co-defendants were involved in. Federal prosecutors structured their case by chapters, calling witnesses to testify about separate schemes allegedly brokered by the senator in tandem with his wife. During the trial, the senator’s lawyers called five witnesses, including his sister, sister-in-law and the attorney for a friend of Uribe.

With a broad smile and crisply delivered answers, Christy Goldsmith Romero, President Biden’s nominee to take over the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, appeared to cruise through her Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday. Ms. Goldsmith Romero’s testimony, before the Senate Banking Committee, is the first step in a process that could put her in charge of the regulator that oversees smaller banks, administers the fund that protects bank depositors’ cash and steps in when a bank fails; it was recently roiled by revelations of widespread sexual harassment and abuse of junior employees by their longtime managers. Over the course of the hearing on Thursday, Ms. Goldsmith Romero’s testimony drew praise not only from Democrats but also from some Republicans, suggesting that she was likely to be confirmed for the position. Ms. Goldsmith Romero is a lawyer who, after the financial crisis, spent more than 12 years in an office created by Congress to investigate fraud and other misconduct by banks that received money from the government’s roughly $450 billion crisis rescue package. Her work exposing fraud often put her at odds with not only bankers but also some government officials who were concerned about the potential damage it would do to overall public opinion of the bailout.

What I am hearing from congressional Democrats about President Biden is this: He has done little to nothing to allay their fears. The caucus meetings House and Senate Democrats held this week were an airing of grievances and despair, but they didn’t chart a path forward. What they need is a process through which they can gather the information they need to make a final decision. There are two main camps among congressional Democrats. Representative Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is among those who told his colleagues that Biden should step aside.

But a Republican win yielded a higher return at 15.3%. The S&P 500 fell 9% in 2000 as the tech bubble peaked months before George W. Bush's Republican win. This could increase the chances of a Trump win — at least, that's what the market thinks. The two graphs below from a Goldman Sachs note on July 8 indicate what prediction markets perceive as each candidate's odds of winning following the debate. On that front, consumer discretionary stocks are perceived as riskier under a Trump administration due to the threat of increased tariffs.

There’s one leader who would, though, if he felt moved to intervene in the Democratic Party’s current pickle concerning President Biden. And he is the rare leader Mr. Biden might just listen to: Chuck Schumer. We know Mr. Schumer is feeling a bit twitchy about the situation. Mr. Schumer speaks not just for himself, but for the chamber’s Democratic caucus, to which Mr. Biden proudly belonged for so many years. His leadership style relies on consensus building, and as yet there is nothing approaching consensus among Democrats about whether Mr. Biden should be pressured to leave the race.

Decision Time for Chuck Schumer?
  + stars: | 2024-07-11 | by ( Carl Hulse | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
If Senator Chuck Schumer, the New York Democrat and majority leader, is known for anything, it is his singular devotion to President Biden’s agenda, which he has helped steer through Congress, and loyalty to Mr. Biden himself, a former Senate colleague whom he admires and respects. But Mr. Schumer is also passionate about his role as his party’s longtime chief Senate race strategist, a hands-on political geek who digs deep into the numbers of every Senate race and is determined to hold both his narrow majority and the White House in November. Over the past two weeks, as Mr. Biden’s re-election campaign has been plunged into crisis following his disastrous debate performance, those two imperatives have come into direct conflict, posing a dilemma for Mr. Schumer as more and more Democrats — including many in his own ranks — question the president’s ability to continue as the Democratic nominee. In public, the usually talkative Mr. Schumer has been determinedly tight-lipped, sticking to a mantra of “I’m with Joe,” even as some in his caucus call for Mr. Biden to step aside and others express real alarm that if he remains the nominee, he may lose and take the Senate majority and their chairmanships with him.
