Gold trades in narrow range as markets wait for Fed minutes
  + stars: | 2023-07-05 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold and silver bars of various sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metals dealer Pro Aurum. Gold stuck to a narrow range on Wednesday as investors awaited the release of the U.S. Federal Reserve's latest monetary policy meeting minutes later in the day, with a stronger dollar also weighing on prices. Spot gold was little changed at $1,923.66 per ounce by 0243 GMT, while U.S. gold futures rose 0.1% to $1,931.20. "Fed minutes are likely to reveal a lively debate where still more rate hikes are to come. High interest rates discourage investing in non-yielding gold, which is otherwise seen as a safe investment amid economic uncertainties.

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) - A standard to assess companies' claims about progress towards internal climate targets and their use of carbon offset credits was launched on Wednesday by a global initiative seeking to bring transparency and confidence to an unregulated market. Many companies have set net zero emission targets but acknowledge they will need to buy or generate carbon credits to offset emissions they are unable to eliminate from their operations. The Claims Code of Practice launched by the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI), backed by the British government, seeks to help investors establish whether claims made by companies using carbon offsets are credible. “There was so much use and misuse, if not abuse of terms like carbon neutral, climate neutral, net zero, net zero aligned, net zero positive etc,” Kenber said in an interview. These standards are expected by the end of the year and in the meantime, companies would be expected to use offsets meeting standards set under the under the global airline industry carbon offsetting scheme called CORISA.

Gold steadies near three-month lows; focus shifts to Powell
  + stars: | 2023-06-28 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold held near three-month lows on Wednesday after strong U.S. economic readings offset the bullion's traditional safe-haven status, while traders positioned for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech and more data for clues on rate hikes. Spot gold rose 0.1% to $1,915.45 per ounce by 0524 GMT, hovering close to its lowest level since March 16 at $1,910. Data on Tuesday indicating that the economy remained on solid footing could lead to more Fed rate hikes to bring down inflation. Powell will speak at a policy panel on Wednesday before the European Central Bank Forum on Central Banking in Sintra along with other central bank members. Spot silver rose 0.2% to $22.93 per ounce, platinum fell 0.9% to $916.83 while palladium dropped 1.1% to $1,281.48.

Spot gold rose 0.3% to $1,928.14 per ounce by 0402 GMT while U.S. gold futures were up 0.2% to $1,937.70. "If the dollar falls but yields edge up (softer Fed tone, neutral/upbeat data), gold may stumble but remain muted as silver, platinum and palladium rise," said Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at Tastylive. "Looking ahead, (gold) will continue to try reconciling signs of a deepening slowdown in global economic activity with this hawkish central bank turn." The dollar index edged down 0.1%, making greenback-priced bullion more attractive for overseas buyers. Economic data including China's Purchasing Managers' Index, and a key U.S. inflation gauge this week could provide a clearer picture on the macroeconomic situation.

Gold prices edged higher on a weaker dollar, although bullion hovered close to three-month lows as traders assessed prospects that more interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve were in the offing. Spot gold rose 0.2% to $1,925.78 per ounce by 0341 GMT. Bullion slumped nearly 2% in the previous week as hawkish comments from Fed officials suggested more rate hikes to bring down sticky inflation. Higher interest rates make non-yielding gold less appealing. San Francisco Fed Bank President Mary Daly said on Friday two more rate hikes this year are a "very reasonable" projection.

Russia turmoil to fuel market volatility, flight to safety

The question is how much and how lasting the reaction will be, much of which depends upon unknowable developments." It is reasonable to expect oil and other key commodity prices to rise. If oil prices rise sharply, that will indeed weigh upon equities and reignite stagflation fears. SP Angel analyst John Meyer said that with global EV sales expected to reach around 15 million vehicles this year, sales of palladium, chiefly used to neutralise harmful car emissions, could be impaired by 1.5 million-2.25 million ounces. While there are still few battery-powered vehicles in the heavy-duty market, exhaust-free electric vehicles are eating into the palladium-focused light vehicle market, Johnson Matthey said. Palladium prices could fall to the $1,250 level, Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA, said. "The reason why people are more pessimistic about palladium than platinum is due to adoption of EVs," he said. "There's a lack of interest in the palladium market.

The point of credit cards is to make spending easier, yet in practice their complexity rivals the edgiest financial derivatives. If late fees have raised hackles among U.S. lenders, they’re only a taste of what could lie in store. Currently, issuers can charge $30 for a first late payment and $41 for late payments thereafter if they happen within the following six billing cycles.

Spot gold held its ground at $1,936.03 per ounce by 0504 GMT. In this light, Chairman Powell's testimony could have a major short-term impact on the market," said Clifford Bennett, chief economist at ACY Securities. "For the moment gold is under the great interest rate threat hammer, but the very real on-going strong jewelry and manufacturing demand should eventually win the day," Bennett added.
