A pushback against climate policies is not just a U.S. issue. Reprisals over climate policies come at a time of record-breaking extreme heat across the globe, with July poised to be the hottest month in human history. Ruling party leader Jarosław Kaczyński described the bloc's green policies as "madness" and akin to "green communism." "At the moment, it looks like green parties are not doing going fantastically well. "The IRA is called an IRA, it is not called a climate act because there's no way that you could get Democrats and Republicans to agree on something called climate," Tocci said.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationORLANDO, Florida, July 26 (Reuters) - Remember the U.S. twin deficits? The dollar did fall - around 40% between the dotcom bust and the global financial crisis - and the twin deficits were a factor. Indeed, when the twin deficits really exploded in 2008 as the government and Fed fought to prevent another Great Depression, the dollar actually rose 25%. "Twin deficits are inherently unsustainable – for Treasuries and the dollar - unless there is a shift towards a deflationary environment that stimulates demand for sovereign debt instruments," Costa said. Persistently wide twin deficits will test the appetite to use the dollar as the savings currency of choice for investors and countries around the world.

Prosecutors want to send Sam Bankman-Fried to jail over alleged witness tampering. Prosecutors asked a federal judge Wednesday to send Sam Bankman-Fried to jail after he leaked his ex-girlfriend's private Google Docs to the New York Times. Bankman-Fried's lawyers said his interaction with the journalist was just addressing his overwhelmingly negative press, but prosecutors say it was much more than that. Bankman-Fried sent more than 100 emails to journalists and made 1,000 calls to journalists, prosecutors say. He called the New York Times journalist who wrote the story based on the leak 100 times, they said.

Elon Musk's Twitter rebrand could land him in legal hot water with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and others, experts say. On Sunday, Musk announced that he was getting rid of the Twitter brand and logo. Meta's trademark for a white-and-blue X relates to "social networking services in the fields of entertainment, gaming and application development." The announcement comes just weeks after the launch of Threads, a Meta-owned app seen by some as a "Twitter clone." X may be "powered by AI" in the future, as Yaccarino noted, but the first phase of Twitter's rebrand is simple for now.

July 23 (Reuters) - Lawyers for FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried rejected prosecutors' claims that his discussions with a New York Times reporter amounted to witness tampering but agreed to accept a gag order, they said in a letter to the judge in the criminal fraud case. The letter, released on Sunday, came after prosecutors sought to bar Bankman-Fried and allies from making public statements that could interfere with the case. Cryptocurrency exchange FTX, once valued at $32 billion, filed for bankruptcy protection in November as it was unable to repay depositors. Ellison led Bankman-Fried's Alameda Research hedge fund and has pleaded guilty to defrauding investors and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. In December, Bankman-Fried said he and Ellison had been in a relationship but gave no further details.

Cuban says he will only take meetings and phone calls if there's "no other way." Earlier in his career, Cuban would run standing-only meetings to ensure they ended faster. Mark Cuban believes he became a billionaire because he's been hustling and selling since childhood. Cuban recently bragged about his 13-year-old son Jake's side hustle selling candy at school on an episode of comedian Kevin Hart's Peacock talk show "Hart to Heart." "He's hustling and selling stuff all of the time," Cuban said in the interview, adding that Jake is tracking and organizing his efforts, too. "He shows me his spreadsheet because he's buying candy and selling it at school," Cuban told Hart, chuckling. Hart noted that Cuban must have been "mind-blown" to see his son taking a candy side hustle so seriously.

After three months without a winner, a lucky ticket holder in California has finally won the $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot — the third-highest in history. The winner now has a choice of an annuitized prize of $1.08 billion or a lump sum payment of $558.1 million. The annuity payout is spread out over 30 years, while the lump sum is paid right away. Most winners choose the lump sum payout, even though it's less than half of the jackpot's listed amount, because those funds can be reinvested right away, rather than incrementally over 30 years. However, Mark Cuban, self-made billionaire and star of ABC's "Shark Tank," has a different take on what the winner should do with the money.

"Early on in my career, I wanted to prove how smart I was and so I did a lot more talking than listening," Cuban said. At the time, Cuban says he was sleeping on the floor of a three-bedroom apartment with six roommates in Dallas. The desire to prove himself sometimes led Cuban to be "too cocky," he says, which could rub people the wrong way. What began as a 12-team tournament in 1991, the Women's World Cup has steadily grown in stature and expanded to 32 teams - the same as the men's tournament. New Zealand kick things off in Auckland against former champions Norway while Australia host Ireland, with both matches set to welcome more than 100,000 fans in total. "It will set the tone for a Women's World Cup that I expect to become a watershed moment in global women's sports," FIFA Chief Women's Football Officer Sarai Bareman said. The pressure is on New Zealand, however, not just as co-hosts but also because they have never won a match at the World Cup in five prior appearances.

LONDON, July 14 (Reuters) - Investment group Ashmore's (ASHM.L) assets under management dropped by $1.8 billion in the three months to June 30, down 3% from the previous quarter, as investors retreated from emerging markets owing to global macroeconomic uncertainties. Net outflows amounted to $2.9 billion, the emerging markets-focused asset manager reported on Friday, citing institutional clients' top-down asset allocation decisions to pull back on emerging market hard-currency debt and other fixed income in developing economies. Meanwhile, a positive investment performance of $1.1 billion cushioned the overall impact on assets under management, which stood at $55.9 billion at the end of June. "There remains some global macro uncertainty and certain investors have therefore reduced risk during the quarter," said Chief Executive Mark Coombs. "However, emerging markets continue to perform well, with support from improving fundamentals such as accelerating GDP growth, falling inflation and the potential for rate cuts, as well as the benefit of a weaker U.S.

The most recent estimates from Bloomberg put Ukraine's tank count at 1,500 active tanks compared to approximately 1,400 for Russia. It's unclear how many tanks Russia has already pulled from storage, as well as how many vehicles it has in storage to keep drawing upon.
