The Return of Manual-Wind Watches
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Ming Liu | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The lack of a rotor generally allows manual-wind movements — and, ultimately, their exterior cases — to be smaller, which suits the current trend for small watches. Bulgari also played with size in developing its manual-wind BVL 100 Piccolissimo movement, introduced last year. “Our very important clients were saying that they had so many high-jewelry watches but found it was a pity that the tiny batteries soon ran out,” said Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, the brand’s production creation executive director. A mechanical movement is forever.”The Piccolissimo first was used in Bulgari’s high-jewelry Serpenti Misteriosi watches, but this year it made its way into the new Mediterranea high-jewelry collection, presented in Venice in May. Manual-wind movements highlight a watch’s vintage look.

Ukraine has launched a site to track $1.3 billion of art owned by sanctioned Russian oligarchs. The site lists artworks like Picassos and Warhols believed to be bought and sold by sanctioned figures. The nature of the art market offers many loopholes for the transfer of assets, the site says. The database, it says, will allow art market actors to check that they are not dealing in sanctioned goods. Art dealings can be a perfect vehicle for the quiet transfer of assets, largely taking place away from the public eye.

A Brief History of Bling
  + stars: | 2023-08-08 | by ( Daniel Levin Becker | Jessica Pettway | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
You can’t hear hip-hop jewelry, technically speaking, but that doesn’t mean you don’t know what it sounds like. The word bling, which entered common parlance at the turn of the century, conjures specific sights: small flotillas of twinkling diamonds, gold layered literally to the teeth, watches so gem-encrusted they barely tick. But it also suggests an expansive range of sounds, from the chimes in B.G.’s 1999 anthem “Bling Bling” to the reverberant pomp of Slick Rick, the otherworldly bounce of Missy Elliott, the diced-pineapple opulence of Rick Ross. One beguiling trick of hip-hop production, whether it’s expensive or ersatz, elegant or gaudy, is to convey musically what jewelry signifies visually. Rappers wear jewelry to floss and flex, to make a flamboyant spectacle of their disposable income, but also to commemorate and honor, to endorse and advertise.

Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC on Tuesday committed 3.5 billion euros ($3.8 billion) to a factory in Germany, its first in Europe, taking advantage of huge state support for the $11 billion plant as the continent seeks to bring supply chains closer to home. TSMC said it would invest up to 3.499 billion euros into a subsidiary, European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC), of which it will own 70%. The factory will cost around 10 billion euros in total. “There is going to be a real ecosystem for semiconductor manufacturing in Germany,” he said. TSMC said in a statement after a board meeting that approved the German investment that it had also approved a capital injection of not more than $4.5 billion for the Arizona plant as part of the overall $40 billion investment.

Pugh stops during intercourse and picks up a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism’s holiest scriptures, and asks Murphy to read from it. India’s film board gave “Oppenheimer” a U/A rating, which is reserved for movies that contain moderate adult themes and can be watched by children under 12 with parental guidance. In 2020, Netflix (NFLX) received significant backlash in India for a scene in the series “A Suitable Boy” that depicted a Hindu woman and Muslim man kissing at a Hindu temple. A $220 light switch is popular among ultrawealthy homeowners, The New York Times reported. The light switch is part of the growing quiet luxury trend. But a $220 light switch probably wasn't on your stealth wealth bingo card. Typical light switches, which can sell for just a few dollars, have hardly been described in such a way. While the light switch, on its own, doesn't function as a dimmer, dimmers can be added as additions alongside the switch, per the Forbes & Lomax website.

NEW YORK, July 23 (Reuters) - It is Barbie’s world, and U.S. small businesses hope their social-media marketing can help them cash in on it. But as Mattel-licensed Barbie marketing and products flood big companies' stores, hotel suites and social media posts, small firms also seek to capitalize on the hype. “Small businesses may look at the Barbie promotions and dream of that kind of budget and mass brand awareness,” said Brianne Fleming, an adjunct marketing instructor at University of Florida. Kering, the French luxury goods company that owns brands like Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent, surprised the fashion industry this week when it announced a sweeping reorganization of its top ranks, including the departure of Marco Bizzarri, the longtime chief executive of Gucci, Kering’s premier brand. Activists have turned on the luxury industry in recent years. Dan Loeb’s Third Point as well as Artisan Partners called for change at Richemont, the owner of jewelry brands like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. But the most active recently is Bluebell, a four-year-old, $250 million firm that has also taken aim at Richemont, and the fashion brand Hugo Boss. Bluebell failed to persuade fellow Richemont shareholders to add Francesco Trapani, the former chief executive of Bulgari, as a director, but the conglomerate agreed to give public investors more influence.

I assumed I didn't need renters insurance if I didn't have expensive things in my home. But I was wrong — renters insurance covers many costs that mattered to me then. Most renters insurance policies have personal property coverage, which covers stolen belongings up to a certain limit minus the deductible. Most renters insurance policies cover water leaks from a broken pipe, so the damage would have been covered. Most renters insurance includes liability insurance, which covers payment if someone gets hurt on your property.
