Zuckerberg said a world full of people walking around in VR headsets is "certainly not the future that I'm hoping we get to." Instead, his goal is for the AR glasses to become a smart phone replacement. "That's certainly not the future that I'm hoping we get to," Zuckerberg told neuroscientist and podcast host Andrew Huberman during an episode of Huberman's show that aired on Monday. In the conversation, Zuckerberg said he viewed Meta's new Quest 3 VR headsets as a successor to people's desktop-based workstations. Last year, one former Meta employee told the Verge's Alex Heath that Zuckerberg's ego is intertwined with the glasses.

The same inevitable supply-and-demand dynamic is about to wash over us again with large language models and generative AI. AI models are trained on masses of data from the past. Humans are good at learning quickly from a small amount of data, while AI models need mountains of information to train on. Soon, human content creators will be vying for attention with content generated by AI models. 'Utility, value and signaling'Hartz, a venture capitalist who now chairs Eventbrite's board, says successful technologists will continue to spend heavily on human experiences.

The astronomers spied a high-speed jet stream in Jupiter’s lower stratosphere, an atmospheric layer about 25 miles (40 kilometers) above the clouds. “What we have always seen as blurred hazes in Jupiter’s atmosphere now appear as crisp features that we can track along with the planet’s fast rotation,” he said. Jet stream revelationsResearchers compared winds detected by Webb at high altitudes with those within the lower layers picked up by Hubble and tracked changes in wind speed. Both space observatories were necessary to detect the jet stream, as Webb spotted small cloud features and Hubble provided a look at the equatorial atmosphere, including storms not related to the jet. Future observations of Jupiter using the Webb telescope may uncover more insights into the jet stream, such as whether its speed and altitude shift over time, as well as other surprises.

How do we bring the best out in our boys, so they become the best of men? I think boys can turn into better men if we teach our sons that they don’t have to fight the world. And so, with practice — it didn’t come naturally to me — I smile and say, “They’re great kids.” That’s the overheard praise. Parents need to be self-aware to realize there’s value in the quiet moments and allow space for spontaneous contributions. Or if the parent goes to counseling or therapy to let them know I’m going to therapy, and all too often it’s kept a secret.

X, the social media service formerly known as Twitter, will launch two new tiers of subscriptions for users, its owner, Elon Musk, said Friday. It's unclear if the $1 annual subscription is one of the two new subscription tiers that Musk is referencing. The social media company already has a $8 per month subscription service called X Premium. Since taking over Twitter in October 2022 and rebranding to X, Musk has made sweeping changes, including cuts to trust and safety teams and removing the blue checkmark from nonpaying accounts. The blue checkmark helped users identify authentic accounts belonging to public figures.

How much do you need to degrade their experience before they stop coming, initiating a sort of death spiral? Modern technology has, in many ways, drastically reduced the importance of distance — not just physical distance but more abstract kinds of distance too. It has never been as easy to interact with people in different countries, in different professions and in different social strata as it is now. Yet even in this shrunken world there are nexuses sustained by what economists call network externalities. The world’s great financial centers are nexuses: People do business in New York or London because so many others do the same.

The Israel-Hamas war shows how social media platforms no longer want to deal with the news. AdvertisementAdvertisementNot too long ago, social media was the future of news. X, formerly Twitter, will begin a test that charges new users $1 annually in order to "post & interact with other posts," the company said in a recent post. The social media platform said Tuesday evening the move is part of its efforts to combat spam and bot activity. Elon Musk previously said the company planned to move to a subscription fee model in September. Excess bot activity has been a consistent rallying cry for Musk since before he acquired the company in October 2022. Bot activity has reportedly worsened under Musk's ownership.

New York CNN —When war breaks out, defense companies tend to make money. That means aerospace and defense stocks tend to rise during geopolitical unrest. Defense stocks typically rise after military conflicts but soon lose those gains. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the iShares defense ETF surged by 5%, with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman’s shares jumping about 20%. Goldman Sachs announced third-quarter results on Tuesday morning, reporting earnings of $5.47 per share, which beat the $5.31 expected by analysts.

CNN —General Motors and Honda, along with Cruise — GM’s autonomous driving subsidiary — have agreed to create a driverless ride-hailing company in Japan. The company will use the Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle to give rides in Tokyo, Japan’s largest city. The Cruise Origin, an electric vehicle GM builds at a factory in Detroit, has no steering wheel, pedals or space for a driver. GM said it plans to build 500 of the vehicles for the Tokyo ride-hailing service, which is expected to be the first autonomous ride-hailing service in Japan, according to the companies. “The range of situations our [autonomous vehicles] have encountered is quite broad,” Voigt said, noting obstacles such as jugglers on the streets of San Francisco and donkeys in Austin.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The IRS plans to invite select taxpayers across 13 states to try out the agency's pilot electronic free file tax return system beginning in January. The agency estimates that hundreds of thousands of taxpayers will participate in the limited rollout of the program for the 2024 filing season. The IRS faces intense blowback from private tax preparation companies that have made billions from charging people to use their software. The introduction of a government-run option could upend the industry and fundamentally change the way taxpayers interact with IRS. The states are “really blazing the trail for this exciting project and finding a way for state filing to work within the context of this, ” Zucker said.

New York CNN —After Elon Musk hinted last month that X could start charging all users, the company (formerly known as Twitter) announced a test of such a system. The test will apply only to new web accounts, and the fee will be waived if users sign up for X’s $3.99 per month premium subscription service. New users in the testing region who opt out of premium and the annual subscription will only be able to read posts, watch videos and follow accounts — but not interact on the platform. X says it has removed “hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts,” taken down thousands of posts since the attack on Israel by Hamas and ramped up Community Notes, its program that allows users to fact check other users’ posts. “X is… addressing identified fake and manipulated content during this constantly evolving and shifting crisis,” X CEO Linda Yaccarino said in a letter to EU Commissioner Thiery Breton last week.
